I honestly start doubting if Frontier really ever took the Meta-wishlist serious or if the first DLCs had just coincidental matches with it, because the animals were still more obvious to complete a Zoo Game, like meerkats, white rhinos or mooses or cougars.
I don't think there's need for doubt when we had packs where entire rosters were based upon animals from the meta-wishlist. And that included animals that weren't as "obvious" as things like a meerkat or a white rhinoceros.
The fact that Frontier no longer solely bases it on the meta-wishlist is probably influenced by a number of reasons, from smaller team size to smaller budgets in general. It was never going to be just the meta-wishlist till the end of the game, that would have been impractical. We were always going to end up with packs that contained more "clone" animals; especially in the situation we're in right now.
But the roster we know so far points more towards the deserty direction, so I guess ocelot would match more with the animals that are in there already.
Eh, I wouldn't really say that the roster itself points towards a deserty direction.
In that regard I think we're primarily influenced by the key-art being desert themed but then again we know from previous packs that that doesn't always define the entire pack. Had we gone by the key-art alone nobody would have expected a sloth bear in the Eurasia Animal Pack. Heck, if we didn't have the dictionairy leak last year absolutely no-one would have guessed the sifaka or the spurred tortoise based on Zookeepers' keyart.
I wouldn't even have guessed "desert pack" if anyone would have told me the animals we know so far (coyote, rhea, bighorn sheep, saki, American/Chilean flamingo) without the key-art. My first thought would be "Ah, America/Latin-America. Cool."
that is if one of the remaining animals trully is the coati... is still very weird to me that the animal the pick to promote the pack up front is the coyote if the coati is supposed to be in this
I think it's really as simple as this game is still reaching a much broader audience than just us zoo nerds. Because frankly, aside from the "living sauropod-in-reverse" video that pops up like once a year, coati aren't that well known by the general public and you're better of with an animal that's fairly recognizable.
We spent way too much time looking at the cover animal with zoo-nerd-goggles and not enough with a general "animal-loving" audience googles. Once you do the latter, animals like the raccoon, coyote, wild horse, manul and even the wisent (you don't need to know it's a wisent, recognizing it as a bison is enough) start to make perfect sense. They're either animals that are recognizable wild animals without having to know the animal itself or they trigger an emotional reaction because they remind you of your pets; and sometimes both.
We zoo nerds over here are part of the audience, but the audience is much much bigger than that and these key-art pieces, the animal rosters and the fact that the game is still profitable seems to underscore that
Arid was the 1st pack I was disappointed with.
I think the fact that a lot of people were initially disappointed speaks to the fact that there was never really anything wrong with the animals themselves; but just the combination of them all instead of them being spread out over more packs that was the big problem with the pack.
I wouldn't get rid of any of the animals added to the game, they all deserve their spot, but man that pack really could have showcased a much broader roster of arid places.
