What's your "Eleanor"?

As in, from Gone in Sixty Seconds.

A ship that you like the idea of but it never seems to work out;- something always goes wrong, it's just not as good as you need or you just can't find a use for?

For me, it's the Keelback.
Love the flappy thrusters and I truly believe it's ED's "Millennium Falcon" ship but it's just... hopeless.
It's not big enough to be a decent cargo ship, it doesn't have the hardpoints or internal slots to be a mining ship, it's not fast enough or tough enough to be a blockade runner, it's jump range is mediocre at best and, basically, there's always a better ship for the job.

I ask because I've just bought another one... and this time I've doubled-down by buying a ship-kit and a paint job for it.
I've got an idea for it and this time, hopefully, it might work out.
Fitted it with all the modules it needs but it still needs engineering.
Then, finally, I might end up with a useful Keelback to add to my fleet. (y)

Oddly, for me the Keelback is my go-to core miner. prospectors, no collectors, she's maneuverable enough and a great scooper. Just Enoch cargo to make about 20 million a trip in just over an hour. https://s.orbis.zone/qUgG

For me it's the Imperial Clipper, I want to like it, but it just doesn't get me there...

For me it's the anaconda, I have tried multiple times and multiple configurations for different task and it is a let down everytime.

Useless exploring as you can't see anything but nose.

Useless as a miner because the nose sends the prospector limit flying if you so much as move.

I don't pew pew, but I can't imagine it would be any good for that, half the battlefield would be hidden by nose.

And it's ugly as hell (even with a paintjob).

Glad I got that off my chest :)

I’ve never found a use for or ever bought:

FDS
Keelback
Asp Scout
Crusader
Type 6.

I have at least one of all other available ships. In many cases several. An example is that I have 7 Python mk I’s:
General purpose and mission runner
Core Miner
Passenger missions
Cargo (made obsolete by T8)
Station Rescue
Pirate
Megaship pirate

I really liked the idea of support role crafts, but Elite is not exactly a game where this can work in a worthwhile way.

My idea for a support role craft would be the T10. The forward facing hardpoints would be beam lasers with regeneration sequence, while the other hardpoints would be turret weapons to provide cover and protection, can stick some experimental stuff on them to hinder enemies. The utility slots can go for stuff like chaff and point defense and other goodies, depending on the situation. As for modules - everything limpet based - repairs, fuel transfers, etc, plus SLF. As for the rest of the ship - just focus on it being able to survive as long as possible under heavy fire.

Sadly, like I said, such focus oriented stuff is just not worth it to try, since the game is not the kind where you can just glue yourself to others, buff them up and expect others to not melt you in the process.

It is the Anaconda for me too.
Remember the excitement of finally being able to buy one, around a year after starting to play...
Flew it out of the mailslot, and poodled around in space near the station for a few minutes, hated flying it...
Flew back into the station, sold it, and bought a Beluga instead.

Tried a couple of times since then, but it has always ended back up on the 'low Ly' used ship market.

God, I feel bad joining in the Anaconda disparagement. It's an objectively amazing ship. Saving up to buy one back in 2018 was a major goal. I just... didn't know what to do with it. At the time there was no chance I was leaving my FDL for an Anaconda for combat, and if I wanted an invincible PvE ship it was going to be a Corvette. I never cared about jump range as the one true exploration stat so it wasn't replacing my Asp Explorer for me for exploration. I realised I'd rather bulk trade in a Type-9 or eventually a Cutter.

I think the real problem is I fought too many pirate Anacondas along the way, and it ruined the mystique and rep of the ship. Anacondas don't feel like player ships, they feel like meal tickets.

For me it's the Vulture. Objectively a brilliant small combat ship, but to me always feels too big, too heavy and leaving me wondering why I'm not in one of my lightweight FdLs if I'm going to be in something like that (Fun fact is there's only 50t difference between the two).

Anaconda gets a mention for the ship that I've tried the most things with and found something I'd prefer to use instead though.

The Cutter.

Looks good and is versatile, has reasonable striking power, is fast and, of course, the 704 tons cargo when fitted for multirole. But the Corvette fights better, is way more fun, and because I fight and not run, the speed is not crucial. 560 tons cargo are enough.

(I mostly agree on the views on the Anaconda, but 2 things why I love her: loading loads of modules in her and doing engineering or applying experimentals all around the bubble with long jump range, and second, the damage model 🙂)

S'funny how people's opinions change.

I remember when I first started playing ED, back when having a million credits was a milestone, I was bounty hunting in a RES (not a HazRES, mind you, because those places were scary) when another CMDR showed up in an Annie and I was awestruck.
I mean, the thing was huge and somebody had earned enough credits to buy one and in the hands of a CMDR, rather than a dim-witted NPC, it was probably more dangerous than the Death Star.

After that, I spent years seeing Annies crashed on planet surfaces or buried in the side of mountains and, by the time I could afford to buy one, I felt like it was some kind of antique, like it was an old riverboat paddle-steamer that somebody'd left to go rusty.

I do like the Annie, simply because it's so good at everything, but the first thing I do with mine is point them out of a system and engage SC for about 2 hours to wreck their paintwork because I feel like an Annie should look old and clapped-out.

Crusader, tried everything to make it work - even going shieldless at one point

I've always found all the Alliance tank-ships to be a bit frustrating and... I'm still not really sure why.
Basically, it seems like my builds are always less than the sum of their parts.
I fit all the "correct" bits but, in use, they never seems to perform as well as I expect.

Would definitely qualify as "Eleanor" ships but, honestly, I've never been able to get past the "dog squatting to poop" shape they all have so I've never really wanted one.
Main thing that kept me away from the 'goids was the fact that the tank-ships were what most people were flying to fight them.
It was only when I saw an AX KM2 build that I decided to give it a go.

For me it's Hauler and Adder.
I like the look of both. I enjoy cockpits with their limited view, feeling like being in an old car. I enjoy flying them.
They have decent range and especially Hauler can be quite fast and agile, but they are no more than a taxi and for everything they might be useful for, not requiring firepower or cargo space, from exploration to Odyssey missions, I find DBX to be much better choice, so I always must kind of force myself to use one of them. And when push comes to shove those cockpits I like so much are not as fun as actually having less obstructed view.

The Corvette.

I bought it about a month after it was released, I've spent dozens of hours engineering differnt outfits, bought midnight black with a ship kit, and yet I just can't bring myself to fly it for more than a few minutes.

The main reason could be shocking, but it's because I prefer the Anaconda (I have three).

The Corvette might be the best large combat ship to most, but I find that it drifts a lot more, to the point that maneuvers I regularly use in the Conda to stay behind or to the side of NPCs will result in just face-tanking them because the Corvette will stall out.

I also don't regularly use large ships in PvP hotspots, like CGs, due to the masses of Pacifier MKIIs, so the extra shield tanking ability of the Corvette doesn't really make that much of a difference.

It has less versatile and fewer hardpoints, so I can't really use it as a large mining ship like the Conda, it hauls less than my Cutter and the jumprange is pretty bad, so no to exploring in it.

I even have a T-10 that sees vastly more flight time than the Corvette, simply because it's much different to fly.
