Hot takes for planet zoo

With all this talk of another Africa focused pack I’m wondering if it’s becoming a hot take to say i really don’t want a second zebra or giraffe? Especially not in the same pack? Great free update animals, but taking up 1-2/7 spots in a paid DLC? At least the flamingo came from a totally different continent, but two giraffes are pretty much gonna have the exact same use in game.

The grévy’s zebra is marginally better to me with how much more distinct they are (the zoo I used to intern at mixed them with white rhinos, love them irl), but with how many good species there are for an Africa pack (even ones similar to base game animals, cough cough crocodile) it would still feel like a bit of a waste.
I think if they want to add some base-game remake level picks, the Barbary macaque and Nile crocodile would be better, more popular, and more useful. I would kind of like to get a Grevy's zebra and a Masai giraffe, but I'd rather not give up DLC slots for them, especially not in the same pack.

I don't think many people want them. We're putting them in our predicted lineups because we expect them

Honestly I’m fine with 1 clone a pack, but as much as I get why the flamingo wasn’t exciting for many players. It also was a different species, with a different range. While I totally get why people want a new zebra (man it could use the newer equine rig) or giraffe. Yeah they would virtually be the same.

I’m just really not looking forward to “another pack” and it doesn’t offer me a habitat reptile, or bird. At least something that isn’t another mammal! I am happy for the butterfly in the free update, so more of that might be nice. But at this stage in the game, if it isn’t a monkey or a rodent (and a handful of other individual mammal species) I’m not really excited for it.

So part of me is dreading the idea of a return to Africa, only because I have a gut feeling it might be 4/7 hoofstock again.

I want the croc and wouldn't mind a Giraffe knowing Frontier always puts a reskin.

I really, REALLY dislike how this thing looks, and to me it doesn't look like a raccoon dog at all.
I tried to find a real raccoon dog in a similar pose, and... Yeah. The head is the completely wrong shape, and the ears are gigantic. The colour also feels wrong but maybe that's just the lighting.
The face is just this big round dumpling that doesn't look remotely anything like a raccoon dog.

I didn't want this animal, but seeing this model makes me like it even less.

The Japanese species seems to have bigger ears than the mainland species (which is in the photo you posted). The two species have different colours, with the mainland being mottled and the Japanese being more of a flat brown. The head does indeed seem to be big but overall it still reads as a tanuki to me

My Hottake,
I am well okay with another elephant
IF we now finaly begin to get more zebras, giraffes, elks/deer and bunch more wolves
Yes, I hear you "mOrE wOlVeS?!" ... but even though I hear guys saying two american wolves is enough,
I still think we are missing these:

1750598047711.png
Extra unique Endangered Ethiopian wolf
1750597971302.png
Extra thin hot climate Endangered Indian wolf
1750597953536.png
Extra red and Criticaly Endangered Red wolf
- - - additions

1750597931692.png
Extra fluffy Vulnerable Himalayan wolf
- However only if they would be the ultra fluffy neck variant compared to Arctic ones. Othewise it's not that unique besides lighter/beige color while Arctic should get more clean white texture.
1750597911074.png
Least Concern Eurasian wolf, cmon let Europe have something too :D
- But it would be actually cooler if they got rather 'summer variant' or had both winter and summer variant so it looks distinctive from grey/timber wolf.

I am not 'that crazy wolf lover person', I am actually crazy for equines and deer, but still I think these wolves, at least the first three, are still important to get to the game.
If we got almost all bears of the world and plenty of crocodilians, I cannot stop fighting for wolves that are accused of "more than enough" by having just two american individuals.

I think we could use a few more crocodilians TBH. Namely Cuban crocodiles and Central slender-snouted crocodiles. But of course, reptiles (including birds) are so severely under-represented that any crocodilian is a fine addition.
Didn't know about those,
Cuban ones indeed look like unique spotty cuties!

And it made me remember we got Criticaly Endangered African slender-snouted crocodiles in our zoo for conservation purposes.
That's something I'd like to see added in PZ as well!

Cuban crocodiles are awesome.
They have a rather unique morphology with their long legs, prominent ears and rough scaly armour. They're among the most terrestrial living crocodilians and, together with maybe the Freshie from Australia, they're one of the very few crocodiles that can gallop...Unique looks and unique animations.
I'd be down.

As for an African croc... I'd prefer the "standard" Nile Crocodile

It seems like PZ model makers have a particular problem with neck fur on animals,
considering how Pallas Cat was made
1750598505855.png
1750598602187.png

and how they chose the solid color short fur version of Dhole rather than picking the unique colorful fluffy cutie

:(😞
So I guess the lack of neck fur is the main problem why certain animals like Racoon Dog don't look quite right.

TBF, the colours don't really look alike either. The japanese species is a lot more brown with a very distinct dark "mask" around the eyes... The abomination we're getting is mostly grey.
To me it looks like one of those early game animals that would have come out in like 2021. I can't wait for a remaster mod.

They're also known to hunt cooperatively, and also have exceptional intelligence! (that said, crocodilian intelligence is generally very understated)

They could have simply made the face less rounded and smaller. That way it would have looked at least slightly like a raccoon dog.
This thing looks uglier than the OG Binturong as far as I'm concerned

I would reccomend to wait for whole reveal to properly judge. Animal should look more like a civet (hence latin name) and its not clearly visable from this angle.
Based on image though I would say it is simply made to be conventionaly cute to appeal for animal target audience. This why you feel like it is weird. It has greatly exaggerated pupils and weirdly round head shape.

Good choices. I'm ok with another Wolf... IF I could pick, I'd go with Ethiopian Wolf or African Golden "Wolf". Although, the Himalayan Wolf is also beautiful and I love Red Wolves. The Eurasian Wolf would be nice for European representation.
All that said, I'd hope (for community) we get other kinds of animals around the same time or BEFORE we get a new Wolf... Like: Ducks, Australian Monitor, African Crocodilian, Pheasant, NWM, New World Typical Deer, Small Fanged Deer, Pelican, Coati, etc.. Even a Serval would probably be better received than yet another Canis. :(
At the end of the day, I'm for more support.
So my hot take:
PZ1 could keep going for a year or so. :D

Honestly in a perfect world I would be very happy with the red wolf, I love conservation stories and the red wolf is a common one in the states.

With everything though I think the fact Frontier continues to focus on the same animal groups kind of sours my opinion a bit. I mean after 6 years of development the amount of birds (all of Aves mind you) only increased by 11 species. That’s under 2 birds a year.

If every DLC had one bird and one habitat reptile, then yeah I would care way less if we got “just another” antelope, wolf, bear, caprine, feline, canine, bovid, etc….

That is for sure, you are absolutely correct, I don't yell to get wolves NOW, plenty of animals needs their spotlight, it's just so annoying to hear "we don't need another wolf" evergreen in forums.

Ohh, this is the African Yellow Wolf??

I would have mistaken him for jackal, I didn't know about that one, interesting :D

Again more reason for the sequel to have a subspecies selector so these wolf subspecies (beside Ethiopian and maybe Red wolf) don’t clog the roster
