Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I'm just tootling around doing some Powerplay stuff and checking out a few systems to see what missions are coming up.

One thing I really like about Elite Dangerous is how you can just come upon an amazing view while you're out doing normal stuff.

Whatcha think?

Come on pilots; get off those pads! :D
Are you playing in open or solo?

I'm just scouting out my new planet 'base'...amazing the detail that's been put into these player built stations.
I've put a few questions up on the forum in the Trailblazers 3.2 topic (I should have used the 3.3 in retrospect )...anyway, I need to activate the stations shipyard, cartographic and lounge facility's, it looks like at the moment I need to build a high tech hub...but once again I'm not sure....I'm pretty much &^%$* hopeless at understanding the station builds ...ah, well....nevermind!. :D

Whew!...77 degrees F in the shade earlier on this morning and my CPU's hovering between 60-67 degrees C playing the game, GPU's at a steady 60 degrees C though.
I've got one of those Thermal Grizzly Kryo sheet pads under the air cooler, but I'm thinking if I'd used paste I might get it to run a few degrees cooler... I've always used paste before without problems but it's an art not to put too much or too little on the CPU, and later on it can be difficult to separate the cooler from the CPU, I've personally found. And also cleaning it off can be messy!

Oh dear, I'm rambling again...must be the heat! 🫠

Jack :)

Important stuff first.
If you are rambling in the heat wear a hat, and drink suitable fluids.

There is a forum for colonisation where you will probably find several answers to your questions, the most recent answers are likely to be based on how everything works now. It is the forums though so there will be many contradictions.

I ran across a post about a system called 35 G. Carinae, which has several planets containing Brain Trees. Brain Trees can be useful when gathering Raw mats for engineering.

Well, some mad lad decided to Colonize the system (which is pretty far off the beaten track), and then he put a Settlement down exactly 25KM from each large Brain Tree patch, and named the settlement according to the G4 Raw mat that can drop from them, with a direction to fly and everything.

It must have been a huge amount of effort, with the idea of making it easier for CMDRs to find and fill up on Raw mats.

I had to see this for myself, so I took a little jaunt out there. Sure enough, large groves of Brain Trees brimming with materials.

Supposedly the fastest way to collect the mats is by using Flak Launchers from your ship, and collector limpets. I did not bother with all that. The SRV works fine. I suppose it's a bit slower, but I don't care that much :)

A big o7 to CMDR IFOLLOWMYDREAMS for doing this as a service to the community.
Nothing seemed to be going on at Shinrarta so I thought I'd finally try this rather than the crystal shards which seem to be 1600Ly out. I've been on two planets and now have full Animony and Technetium along with a few healthier stores of grade 3 mats. I didn't bother messing with lower grades since there's a material trader 3 or 4 jumps away. That can break up the 'gameplay' a bit.

It's a slow process but things speed up once you're used to it. I didn't even realise you could roll under trapped mats at first so I was wasting time boosting around. It does require a full game quit to relog though.

The other good thing is that synthesising SRV fuel and ammo requires raw mats but you don't have to worry about the waste because that's what you're in the middle of collecting.

What would make this system perfect though is a raw mat material trader at the station, but I once again o7 the system architect regardless. o7

E: I just realised I havent even scanned the brain trees to get a sample. I was gonna head off and take a look at the material trader anyway so I don't mind losing the ship's spot on the planet. I'll do some scans before I leave.

It's 75 here and the CPU was at 80+ with the game on. It's 52 now. Though being planetside can be tougher on the CPU.

I have a question, if I synthesize premium ammo for my multi-cannons and have, let's say half of it left when I log out and don't re-arm, will I lose it when I log back in? Does it revert to regular ammo?

...Yeah, must admit though I must've drank roughly 8 pints of water, and other assorted drinks yesterday, plus I kept in the relative cool of the house.

I had a read through (again) of the various current colonisation topics, but you're right...there's many conflicting ones, but I'm going to build a planet based 'hub'. Not too many commodities to haul so that's the plan. I'll start it today, but I'll be doing some other more interesting stuff in the meantime I think.

I was getting some 'spikes' at one point nearing the 80 degrees mark yesterday...I have the adrenaline game overlay running btw. monitoring the main cpu & graphics readings / settings.
I've noticed this before when docked at stations, and also landed sometimes on planets too that the cpu starts to get that bit hotter. Actually the cpu (and gpu generally) tends to be at lower temperatures when I'm traveling through space or out exploring, (I don't partake of the ground combat features so I suspect that would push the overall temps up a bit).
This overly hot weather is at least testing out my cpu cooler set up, and so far (🙏) it's not looking too bad for an air cooled cpu. ( AMD 7800 x3D).

Okay, I'm just going to initiate that planet hub, dump what's left of some commodities left over from the last build at this hub and head off into another part of the bubble, or deep space. 🫡

Time to call a brief break on colonisation (pending delivery of my pre-order Panther Clipper MkII) and clear the cobwebs from the old FC with a blast out to the Colonia area for a bit of hard core engineering.

We're loaded with discount life support units and enough tritium to float a battleship.
Also haulin' out some thargoid hearts and meta-alloys to see if the locals are interested in the ingredients for a thargoid bobblehead.

Heading out to Barango for a last tritium top up 'before the Motorway' then it's non-stop jumps to Colonia (well Eoch Flyuae QK-E d12-2118 where I'll top up the tritium again prior to heading to Los).

It has been a while, how wrong can it go?

My raw mat stocks are looking healthy but I was on this planet for so long I suddenly caught a sunrise.

Hah. yes, I did play in that for a while but it didn't really pan out as I'd expected. I might get rid of it if that's possible.
I've mentioned this before but things like the large anti-xeno group are good for people who like to see other players around but also want to see some curbs on ganking activity. That isn't specifically aimed at you but maybe a newer person hasn't thought about all the options.

Not that I think gankstering should be banned from open or anything.

Hi :)
Not that I think gankstering should be banned from open or anything.

Na!...it adds a touch of danger, but is easily avoided once you've gotten accustomed to where the gangsters usually hang out in open, and there's always solo or pg.
In a way it's self regulating imho, the more the gankers frequent certain areas the more some players turn to solo in those areas....they eventually starve themselves to death!.:D
I sometimes do some open play just to test out my skills at evasion in some systems, I'm not always successful though. 🙃... I do sometimes play in open when out exploring, but I've never usually seen another player in those areas, at least in open. I think it's only been once that I've seen a players carrier in one of those areas I've been exploring in though.

Just a note...my 'forays' into the bubble the other day on a curiosity self imposed mission (sort of)...I wanted to find out why the system Core System Sector IR-W C1-25 hadn't been claimed by anybody. It's quite close relatively speaking to SOL, all the systems (in a large area) around SOL have been claimed, it's just this one that stands out from the rest on the galactic map due to it's singular position when looking at the map in 'unclaimed' mode.
Anyway, I landed at a couple of claimed / inhabited systems in close proximity to this system and tried to claim it (a few times) just out of curiosity, the menus etc. all started to work as usual until the final claim system showed up, but it wouldn't let you proceed any further. I'm not sure why as the system shows up as unclaimed initially, and leads one to think it's possible to claim it.
I wonder why?...it could be a bugged system and Frontier haven't perhaps fixed it...or some other reason that I just haven't figured out yet!
If anybody knows the real reason why this system is unclaimable perhaps you'd let us know, it would at least solve this 'mystery'.

What I'm doing Today...collecting some commodities for my 'hub' but only if they happen to turn up at stations I'm doing some missions for. So I'm mission running at the moment, I might drop into Shinrarta and get that Corsair (or at least buy it with arx from there) but there's a couple of my ships I also want to upgrade with various modules really.
I'm still 'cleaning out' unwanted (at the moment) commodities in my carrier, so I might also look around on the galactic map for player stations still needing stuff for their builds, and get rid of some items that way.

Unrelated to the game...we ate some mangetout peas and potatoes grown in our veggie plots yesterday, lovely! 🫛
Tomatoes in the greenhouse are growing great but none ready to pick yet, also courgettes growing well, cucumbers, lettuce, spring onions and runner beans should be ready in a few weeks time.
It's taking a lot of effort keeping them watered though, so I'm having to top up the water butts weekly....we need a few days of gentle steady rain!
These are my arch enemy's at the moment!....🐌...👿

Jack :)

Not sure of the answer, but have also wondered what happens to leftover premium ammo if one rearms at a station/carrier - is it also premium, does one forfeit the mats if not?
I am pretty sure the ground crew just pull the partially filled ammo boxes and bang new ones in from stock.

You used the mats to transform the ammo so they are gone forever whether you shoot the ammo out the gun or rearm in a station.
You can rearm individual weapons in the Advanced maintenance tab to avoid loss of premium in weapons that aren’t full and IIRC fully ammo Ed weapons with premium aren’t touched by the do everything button.
