Don’t ask me, I’m just the messenger
I think it's worth considering what are internally known as animal "types" (for lack of a better term) based on how animal models are stored in the game files. Here's a basic idea of how habitat animals are grouped:

Animals in the "unique" each tier have a single folder where they're the only species present. There is some loose logic, but there's also some strange cases too.
Aside from peafowl having their own folder, the animals in monochrome tiers have DLC-exclusive folders. I wouldn't expect an anniversary animal to pull from one of those types.
Peccaries having a file 4 years before it addition adds some questions.I assume that clasiffication is based on the rigs the animals use as a base

Maybe it was planned for base game then scratched then added again. Never felt like a free animal material to me.Peccaries having a file 4 years before it addition adds some questions.
There was also a "Porcupine" folder in the NAAP until the game was updated and removed the folder.Peccaries having a file 4 years before it addition adds some questions.
What planet are you living on?because they would have to update the lion we already have
This really puts into perspective how bad every continent other than Asia and Africa were doing in base game. After years of DLCs it’s easy to forget about base games roster.ABB and Nile crocodile are definitely much more requested by many in this community but still base game South America and Australia looks just ridiculously empty, so my idea of fun would be something from there.

Guanaco or Vicuña or both would be a dream come true. They are:

- easy to make,
- for me at least look different enough from their domestic cousins,
- would bring new interspecies bonus,
- they were not selling points of their packs,
- would be realistic to create South American mixed habitats with capybara and rhea,
- domestics would never be a good replacement for wild species,
- imagine just having a domestic donkey and not having Somali wild ass or just an Alpine goat and no Markhor nor Ibex. For me it’s crazy even to think about it.

I will say, a temperate/ cold weather otter would be great to have. Admittedly I would still rather get our second bird for NA. However an American or Eurasian river otter could be cool!Hear me out - River Otters

It's worth mentioning that the red deer and peccary weren't there on day one, so Europe and SA didn't even have that. This really puts into perspective how bad every continent other than Asia and Africa were doing in base game. After years of DLCs it’s easy to forget about base games roster.
I would personally go for Eurasian otter and keep a spot in North America for the sea otter.I will say, a temperate/ cold weather otter would be great to have. Admittedly I would still rather get our second bird for NA. However an American or Eurasian river otter could be cool!
