New NVidia driver just killed ED for me?

Haven't been having any stability problems with ED for months.

Installed the latest driver for my RTX 3080ti (ver 580.88) earlier this evening and now I can't get ED to keep running for more than about 30 seconds without a CTD.

Coincidence?

Did you click the "Clean Install" option? In place upgrades are normally ok, but ED is a bit finicky, so do the clean install where it removes all the old drivers then installs the new one.

I installed the latest drivers a week or so ago, RTX 4070ti Super, game runs so much better now, started giving me a lot of problems before upgrading. As suggested there are a couple of options, roll back to old versions and see what happens, do a clean install, and yes it could also be coincidence, maybe the latest drivers are letting your vid card pull more power from the PSU and that's killing it, do you have a utility you can use to underclock your card, do you have utilities to check temps on CPU and vid card, lots of things you can check.

"Clean Install" doesn't remove old drivers it only clears any settings you set in the Nvidia Control Panel.
If you want to completely remove old drivers, you will need to use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

Here is a howto guide.

Try clean installing the drivers (in safe mode using DDU).
Check your event viewer...especially after a crash. Look under system and application. There's going to be some clue in there.
Try turning off overlays.
If none of that pans out? Try a sfc /scannow or a dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and reboot (might be OS/ OS update related).
Try running memtest.

I used DDU once, when switching from an RTX 2080 to a Radeon 6900XT.

I screwed up MONUMENTALLY, and I still don't know what I did wrong. I followed instructions . . . except I must have, somehow, NOT followed directions, because after usage, the system was completely, utterly fried. It wouldn't even boot properly. So, I had to do a clean install.

The fault was, quite obviously, MINE. I have no idea what I did/didn't do -- likely something really inane, where sys admins slap their thighs and wheeze, "And then this fool did THAT, would you believe that!!" :ROFLMAO:

Anyway, I don't use it when upgrading drivers. To me, that's like burning down your house to get rid of the spider in the attic. It worked, yeah, but the screaming, yelling, and swearing . . . not worth it. ;)

That was a bit... odd.

After installing the new gfx driver ED looked normal but, as I said, the game was totally unstable.

I was looking at the NVidia Control Panel, to see if there was an easy way to roll back the driver, and the "Graphics" tab offers recommended settings for a bunch of games and the settings for ED were all very low quality.

Didn't adjust anything but, upon starting ED last night, it started in a window and the gfx settings were all very low quality - as per the settings in the NVidia Control Panel.
Put all ED's settings back to how I wanted them and played the game for several hours with no problems.
Quit out of the game and, out of curiosity, I checked the NVidia Control Panel again and now the recommended settings for ED are back to being what they should be.

I'm guessing the instability was because the low-quality NVidia settings were attempting to inflict themselves on ED but ED wasn't allowing it.
Once ED started up using the NVidia settings, and then I changed them back again, I guess everything synch'ed back up again. 🤷‍♂️
