FFED3D No sound.

Hi All,

Whilst waiting for my Elite Dangerous investment to mature, an having played Oolite to death. I thought having seen FFED3D on you tube to give it a go.

So downloaded the lates version from SCC. set up my config, set the paths etc, and started it up. Worked first time in all its 1920 x 1080 glory and even works in 3d

How ever, i get no sound what so ever. The videos work etc just no FX or music. If i go and play the files from the instal folsers they play fine even the vids, just dont work ingame.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and a soundblaster X-Fi. Works for all other games even FFE the original.

Any help please? :S

Thanks.

Hi BeastieBoy
Firstly welcome to the forum and thanks for backing Elite Dangerious! As to your post, I have merged it into the main FFE3D thread as your question will have a better chance of being answered.

No sound you say and you got it from the SSC? You should know the FFE3D archive is broken at the SSC. If your taking about Ittiz's build, it too still has bugs to work out. I dont get sound either but I did with the Russian build. If you like, try the build available in the Russian Elite Games site here. This is older than Ittiz's version but it runs fine on my PC. Hope that helps you. :)

I think details of any sound issues get placed in a file called ffesound.txt, in the same folder as the game. It might be worth checking this to get an idea what's wrong.

Interesting. I checked out the SSC download last night - the one here - and it all downloaded just fine, all 176MB of it. I don't think it deserves the "broken" tag any more. The sound worked as well :S

I've been putting things together in anticipation of releasing AndyJ's newest build, hence me downloading the SSC package, as this will just be a mod for an existing FFED3D installation.
It'll be well worth having though, because there are loads of new features...

  • Numerous bug fixes, including bombing/photo targets
  • Optional "Anistropic" build
  • Customisable in-game text fonts
  • A choice of navigation & combat target icons
  • Option to disable text on ships/stations
  • Keyboard remapping
  • Patches from Nic's Mod
  • Planet texture fixes

...and loads more I've forgotten about :)

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to complete it this weekend (too much RL things going on); the biggest problem is working out where all the various files are, such as the shareware version of FFE, the basic D3D stuff, etc etc.

Won't be long though :)

I was thinking it might be an incomplete download. Sometimes (especially trying to get it from the Russian Site) this happened and I was missing a few files.

Well that is good news Steve. If Darkone fixed it I must have missed that.

There is still the version on the Elite Forever site. That might be worth a look too. :)

Hi Geraldine, Steve, and BeastieBoy,

The missing sound/music is a known issue in Ittiz's latest Beta (v3) release on SSC, that appears to be due to too many resources being loaded at once.

You should know that Ittiz's build is still a work in progress, and there are still quite a few bugs to be fixed.

This particular issue has been reported already (see http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=95366#post95366), so hopefully it will be resolved in a future update.

I'm keen to try AndyJ's alternative version when it becomes available. I'd love to combine the best of both versions when they're more mature.

:)

PS - Does anyone know any 3D model builders who could possibly help fill in the remaining models in the game?

Ok, the AndyJ patch is now available from the FrontierAstro FFED3D page. As mentioned before, this version contains lots of new features, details of which are in the download.

Hope you have fun with it, and please flag up any issues you have.

Many thanks for hosting the patch Steve! :)

I'll just add that by default it's configured for smoother frame rates rather than absolute detail. A last minute decision which didn't hit the readme... If people have a beefier PC than I do or don't mind the sacrifice, then you can change the smart_optimizer_c value to 3 from 2 to add more detail to planets and make them appear smoother. If you struggled for frame rates in the original FFED3D beta build though, then probably best to leave it at 2 as this setting was the likely culprit.
And as Steve has said - I hope everyone has some fun with it!

We should work together. Compare our code. Which version did you base yours on?

Could you host the common base for both on github and then fork the branch? Might make bringing the two code bases back to one.

I wouldn't mind looking at the code base too.

Hi AndyJ,

I tried it last night, and was very impressed. Performance was fine even at the highest graphics setting. The anisotropic Mod was too unstable though - it kept crashing after 5 mins, and my cargo kept randomly cycling through having anywhere between 0 and 4000 tonnes of Metal Alloys!

I love, love, love the water ripple effects! Thank you so much for that! If I had any criticism of it, it's that the ripples themselves look too big. Each wave would be around a mile high on most planets. Is it easy to make a more dense texture?

And you should definitely consider combine your work with Ittiz. His graphical improvements combined with your bug fixing and performance would make this an amazing game!

Despite DL and sharing I still haven't got around to installing it yet.

Are you working from a common source or are you branched?

Me and AndyJ haven't spoken about combining the code yet. I haven't reinstalled the game or visual studio yet after my computer blew up

Finally got around to installing the stock v3 install with no mods. What is very noticable is the ship passes behind the planet on the intro...

No sound either. Might have a more in depth look later and see what is the difference between V2 and V3.

I think the ship essentially just vanishes on most of the FFED3D intros. (That's the only point where it really slows down on my geriatric system)

One other thing I've noticed is that at the end of the intro sequence, when the "piston" thargoid comes onscreen, it destroys 2 Turner Class ships - not the single Turner Class and Viper Mk 2 that should be there.

FWIW the AndyJ build fixes the ship going behind the planet in the intro sequence, although it still disappears (apart from the engine flares!) when it approaches the living planet. I think the intro was coded quite separately from the rest of the game anyway.

My experience of the two builds has been that Ittiz's has pushed the boundaries a bit further but AndyJ's is more "stable" and has some great options that you can change in the config file.

Both excellent work though :)
