Mintaka!

Are you able to flight "up" to get a better perspective of our galaxy?

In fact, the Orion Nebula is some distance "below" the galactic plane (from the perspective of the ingame map), in some of the images in this thread you can see a bit diagonally onto the Milky Way.

I'm turning back. Only had 150 ly to go to Orion, but it becomes to cumbersome to continue. I was barely able to find my old track back, but I think I found it. As soon as I return to a system with a station I'll turn in the data for a suitcase of credits and buy myself a proper drive and a better fuel scoop, a 16.8 ly drive just doesn't cut it. None the less, it was an awesome ride. :)

*edit*

Cashing 850.000 credits for exploring was fun too.

I found a system with 4 life-bearing planets:

so..... no closeup/flyby?

Glad to see your survived it and that it was not actively... feeding.

I am curious, however, if FD implemented my suggestion that:

I'd like to bump this question.
When you try to fly into the Black Hole, does the game say: "Emergency Stop - Too close!", is it Game Over, does it force you to choose another CMDR name?

How could I know. You drop out of supercruise at 0.13Ls, as the video showed. I didn't bother flying all the rest of the way to the event horizon in normal flight because
- It would take too long.
- The ship would melt long before reaching (just like you can't reach a stars visible surface, you die long before).
- In any case it would abort my entire expedition.
- Which would void me of the chance to see, in the end, how many credits and what explorer rank all that would net me.

But anyway, did anyone really think FD would do that, wipe our save if we got too close or crossed the event horizon? If you want that kind of punishment, you are free to enact it on yourself as you see fit. :p

Great stuff, im jealous - will have to work up to a explorer rig ( not got the explorer package ). +rep.

Great to see the physically correct occlusion, haze and light-warping etc.

Does the black-hole create grav-lenses / einstein-rings from far away ?

If you want an astronomer's input... Yeah, that's exactly what it looks like.

not sure, the ones in Space Engine look a bit better imho

I see a pattern. Just what does it lead up to?

Well...

... it's complicated.

Yes, there are quadruple gas giants, a contact binary with a hot jupiter, a pitch black glossy planet and a neutron star all in one system. :D

According to ED's implementation of gravity wells I'd expect an infinite 'time-well' here, so if I'm right and if ED is consistent here it would take 'forever', not just 'too long'.
It depends on the perspective. Forever for everyone that is looking from outside, but for the explorer it would take just some hours.

why does ED not have anything to simulate stars close to eachother devouring one another?

why no 4d accretion disks on black holes?

wait, if you spend time in a system with high gravity time passes faster in this game? what? how the hell does that work? like, you're not going to be sat next to a black hole for an hour and suddenly everone's been playing the game for a few months

Because there are things with higher priority than that, the correct graphics for contact binaries, for example, has been mentioned by FD pretty early on when we could visit I Bootis for the very first time, back in Alpha.

Anyway, back to business:
