The Route planner discussion thread

There is route planning on the galaxy map, but beyond a given distance it fails to "compute". Sadly, it also does not yet have the capability to remember your route and offer waypoints. I'm betting all that is in the future tho. All we see right now is the starting point of the design.

I definitely support that.

Currently navigation in between 400 Million stars is a pain and absolutely no fun. ... and it's a game to be fun. My life is stressful enough.

Why can't I just set a course with the (currently not working) rout finder in the galaxy map and the next to jump to system is always a) marked somehow AND b) pre-locked for the ease of jumping.

Currently I have to navigate with a piece of paper and re-checking my bearing. It's arduous!

Thank you, Devs!

I really hope they will put some mechanism to make traveling handy/easier.
Currently i stopped playing because its cumbersome jumping from one system to another.

i would be satisfied with at least some route itinerary in info panel for instance.
When you look at it, it would open up list of systems that you selected your route to go through.
Something..... just that we don't need to constantly look into a map.

Currently the galaxy map will highlight the path across A to B with multiple systems in between, but please take this to the next step by having it automatically select & queue the next destination jumps from this generated path.

The feature where I can search for a distant star and plot a route is very nice. The "Yellow Brick Road" is great except that I am forced to go back and re-search the target and then select each star along the route.

1) It would be nice if I could just select the target and my ships computer would allow me to jump to each jump point along the route automatically.
2) I would like my search string to be persistent when I leave the navigation screen and then come back.
3) When searching I would like to get a list of matching star systems when I type in a partial match. A simple selectable list box under the navigation search entry box would be fine.

+1 to both points.

It's a pita and I have written lists of stars, which is all very quaint and all, but we have interstellar travel, where's the interstellar waypoint list?

Yeh, agreed. I hope this is introduced soon. It doesn't feel like a complex change all things considered. They're most of the way there with the current state of the galaxy map.

Yeah it's the incredibly simple things like this that are missing and will hurt the game a lot as people get bored of having to do the chores part of space travel. Also it's just damn weird that space stations, ships and everything else in the game seem to have less functionality than my watch or phone.

That blank central panel in the cockpit would be ideal for listing waypoints.

I always thought that when the maps got a overhaul they would become projections out of that panel and when not being used as full map could display travel/waypoint info.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I was "inspecting" that screen yesterday. Would be a mighty fine usage of this MFD. Then imagine if you could display it on an actual MFD controller... I don't own one, but I think I would get it just for that.

Oh NICE IDEA!

How is the best way to plan getting from one side of the galaxy to the other? I am finding it hard to figure it out. I want to go to Sol but I'm so far away that I'm for ever searching the galaxy map yet never seemingly getting any closer to my goal. Any suggestions?

Oh and thanks for the good dog fighting tips last night though I'm still as bad at fighting as ever. I did manage to get a few shots off on target tonight before having to make a run for it. :)

I find that for a long route, I am constantly hopping in and out of the galaxy map trying to recall what my next jump should be.
The names are so similar for most systems, I can't manage it :p

I intend on a long trip tonight and I was just going to select where I want to go, then follow the yellow line writing down every system (well scribble really) and follow it that way. Lots have expressed interest in a route planner and it looks like its 1/2 way there, it just needs finishing off.

For me I can only plan jumps up to 40ls ish at a time.

I plan a route for that and use notepad to list the system order. Then jump explore jump again rinse and repeat till I'm at my last jump point, then I plan the next 40ls jump route...

Rinse and repeat till your at your destination, ie Sol.

Hope that helps.

that is easily the best thing i have seen today. I just ran a route from g87-16 to Sol, it took maybe 4/5 hours. you are a godsend!
