Elite / Frontier what did you look for in a ship?

what did you look for in a ship?

there's probably a host of obvious answers to that question, but likely a few surprising tastes n tips too...

distance
for me (a ffe player), there was usually one thing i always really tried to make sure i had. 13.67 distance for the jump. (i think thats right)
so i could get from sol to vans maneens star system in one jump. those poor religious nutters just love their luxury goods. ;)

turrets
besides that point... it was the turrets when i wanted to ... cheat. hehe.

you see, with a turret, you could put your time drive to pause, and move around at your leasure to find your target, get lined up, start firing, and with a crafty keypress or two, get your target. ok, it still takes some skill. get into a situation too hairy n u might need a save to manage to get out of it.

top and bottom, and preferably one where you cant shoot your own ship.

size and speed
besides those factors, when up to the state of bulking it around for cash, it's all in the size and speed. so for me, it had to be the boa. not the biggest of the big ships, but the fastest. and...

looks
...the boa just looks great. simple, sleek.
other great lookers include the gyr, the wyvern, the merlin, the imperials, and of course, the most gorgeous of all, the austin martin of the interstellar space.... the viper mk2. :)

but no, really... i really do want to get to vans maneens in one jump. :D ... and have room for as much cargo as i can fit, and as much as the market allows. ;) there's a sweet spot.

Unfortunately, I just go for the looks.

In the original FFE that means the Griffin. In FFED3D it's the Imperial Courier.

For me in Frontier: Elite 2, it was distance, looks and cargo capacity. I loved the Imperial Courier (or was it trader? Too many years ago) so much, but it did not have the ability to carry a Military Drive. So I spent most of one or two nights trying to misjump near a system. After successfully causing my engine to burn out AND be close enough to a system I spent the rest of the night flying to said station and outfitting the Military Drive (cool cheat huh?! :D)

Now I had distance looks and heck with capacity it was fun.

Anyways hopefully the next Elite will have many a varied ship design!

Big guns & loads of storage space...:D

The wonderful Panther Clipper every time.

I always only ever used two ships - The ASP and the Imperial Trader. Mostly for aesthetics but also because they had a sweet spot for speed, shields and weapons mounting ability.

Mostly capacity and manoeuvrability, though I wouldn't want ship with abysmal jump range or one as ugly as Skeet.

I would go for a multirole kind of ship.
For the combat part the kind that can take some pounding.
So a flying fortress of its class.
I'am to slow for fast action.
Must be fly by wire. And some crew who handle things to.
So at least something bigger then a fighter.
Also I go for realism and functionality.
If science stands in the way of fun then the plausable fiction comes into play.

And because I have a semi high-end gamerig. I want a modern space faring game. Wich are very rare. Yes I'am spoild with fancy GFX. Like Crysis (Warhead).

So I play xseries. It's a bit to abstract but have a lot of depth.
There My favo allround ship is a Phanter Frigat and missile Frigat Cobra.

So a game even with more depth less strickt game rules lots variation and realistic feel would make me happy.

Room enough for a 100mw beam, at least 80 shields and other equipment.
More range and speed than a panther or explorer.

Yes, it's got to be the boa! Also great as it looks a bit like a mini Imperial Star Destroyer.

For me the thing I always looked for in a ship was the button to fire the lasers! Usually followed by me shouting "Burn for your sins!!!!"
That or the nearest star so I could sing the old Pink Floyd classic "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" and watch my ship explode!
Some people might think I've missed the point, I think I found a different one!

I was always an imperial pigdog your honour! :D

this was a lovely thread where all us nerdy 'leet fans were sharing tales and tips, then along came you, hijacking my thread with witty banter!? you imperial pigdo~ oh.

hehe, nah, just kiddin. i like your style. :D

think i enjoyed quite a few different kinds of ships, my favorites (in particular order)

Cobra mk III: just a classic, well armed, fast and capable
Imperial courier: Even more well armed, deadly and star trekkian :D and deadly ups said that twice... :D
Imperials in general: love the cargo capacity and the overall design... perhaps excepting the explorer which was overkill.

Lion: lovely design, not so efficient but okay
Panther & Puma: cargo space and turrets, you can never go wrong when you are trading in those (and the imp exp)

Krait: fast and furious design, light on cargo and weapons but a fair ship.

Viper: just being a classic, simple yet efficient design

Firefly: for it's supreme awesomeness, character and handling... erh... :D

I liked the Moray, it was good for most things but a bit slow, the Cobra Mk1 was also useful because it had a greater range than the Mk3. I have to admit though, I always secretly wanted a Fer-De-Lance.

I'm playing glfrontier at the moment and have a Transporter.....it's pretty awful actually, but I needed the extra space, so what can you do.

The Transit van of the Elite world. I hope you've painted it white and let it get disgustingly dirty so that some wit can write "Also available in white" in the dirt on the back.
