I have some words of wisdom for the new Commanders when docking. When in doubt, boost your way out.

I LOVE THIS GAME! Made it all the way to Sol and Earth doesn't produce a thing?! It figures. But isn't that the way our economy is going anyway. I mean, China is producing stuff all the time. I suppose in the year 3300, Sol only produces quarry and minerals from the other planets we have in our solar system.
Well here's a giggle for the oldies and the newbies at my expense...
Today (been playing since alpha mind...), I did some bounty hunting in an anarchy system to the tune of about 200,000 CR, and scooped some stolen prototype cargo, which I promptly forgot about. Flew back to my normal lawful system, and headed to a station to dock and hand in bounties.
I fly a 65million CR Asp...
Messed up my approach to station (first time I've done that in AGES, but it happens!), and overshot the toaster rack getting a little tangled with it, and it was then that my old mind decided to kick in and remind me of the stolen cargo...
"Scan Detected"
Untangled, and boosted into the slot in a panic trying to avoid getting fined for smuggling, which I managed just fine... except now I can't stop. Slammed into the back wall of the station, and survived with 3% hull. The 15k fine I would have got for smuggling turned into a 250k repair bill...
Moral of the story, we were all newbies once, and senior moments still come to all of us

i jumped into the game to give some noobs some free gold and whatnot, but even in open play I don't see anyone anywhere.
I'm near Cosi which has had a traffic of 1100 ships in the past 24 hours, but I don't see anyone.

LHS 3447 is pretty busy, as are the surrounding systems. Lots of CMDR pilots about.
That sounds like me. I keep over shooting SC and having to realign myself back up. Docking is hard but it's just remembering to line up.
I managed to land on the out post them completed my first trading mission.
I love this game already. Shame my little boy is poorly.

I'm so looking forward to seeing this when i get online later todayI just watched a human player in a sidewinder boost into a station's letterbox while another human player in a sidewinder was boosting out of it.

This is exactly how I envisioned the launch of ED.
1. max throttle until you're 7-8 seconds away.
2. 75% throttle the rest of the way.
3. [optional] wait until your speed is <1.3 Mm/s then max throttle again to shave off a couple seconds.

My advice to any new players reading this : try hitting Boost while landing or taking off and watch the fun. If you're gonna crash and burn, do it in style, and you will be far from the only one to ever do it. Trust me. Many a station has an interestingly shaped black smudge on the walls to indicate I was there
Or better yet, you have voice attack on. And while docking you dodge a type 9 going out. You call him a swear word that begins with B as you evasive action. Voice attack thinks you said boost. Next your a smear on the flight tower..
