Radio Music player

A integrated music player to play my music library or online streams would be awesome and mixed into the cockpit hull would be more realistic than having to leave the game (DK2) and fiddle with the music.

Good suggestion!

I was thinking of something similar. I've heard people describe Elite as being like GTA, but in space. Well, if that is true, I would definitely like to see our Elite ships copy the best aspect of GTA's cars (as well as Saints Row's vehicles): having a functional radio with multiple radio stations. I think this would work great for Elite because, as with GTA, we could have regional radio broadcasts giving us the latest news, as well as all sorts of amusing commercials. Having different types of music stations too would help alleviate some of the boredom of those long cruises.

Hahaha, that is both a funny and brilliant suggestion. I love the soundtrack in the game but having a few 'radio stations' could be quite fun. Especially if they incorporated news, new bounties or even traffic or commodities demands in the system. I know that's probably quite challenging and requires a lot of workload but bit by bit I could really add to the enjoyment

I would play "Benson, Arizona" from the movie "Dark Star".

Benson, Arizona, blew warm wind through your hair
My body flies the galaxy, my heart longs to be there
Benson, Arizona, the same stars in the sky
But they seemed so much kinder when we watched them, you and I

I'm in the process of setting up VoiceAttack to play mp3 files. It takes a bit of time get it working the way you like but you can use voice activation to play the song you want, like something relaxing for supercruise, or the classic docking music (blue danube?) when you're coming in to land. Also the asteroid field music from empire strikes back is great for, you know, flying around an asteroid field :)

I think this place is worth a mention too, the blue mars and cryosleep channels are pretty good, used to listen to them loads when I played EVE. http://www.echoesofbluemars.org

Music stream and local playlist

Well, it nothing new that I like to listen to music in game, and I would love to have a streaming channel that exs, play music and read up Local news from the system you are when you entering it. That would feel more open and including in what does happens. I would also love to could open your own local music for your own taste. For right now I have turned of the sounds from the game and play music from a third part player.

The problem with using VoiceAttack or any external means of playing music is that Elite's own soundtrack won't automatically mute when you order your computer to play something. And, personally, I wouldn't want to disable it altogether. A simple solution that considers VoiceAttack would be to add a kebind for toggling music on and off, which could be triggered by VoiceAttack before playing a music file.

Regarding the OP: I'd totally agree to such a feature. The only game, in which I've ever seen an implementation of a music player that also includes the support of radio streams, is Euro Truck Simulator 2. It's a great feature there, and it'd be great in Dangerous, too.

Oh, and my suggestion for great internet space radio: soma.fm, a collection of themed, ad-free radio stations, particularly these ones:

Space Station Soma
"Tune in, turn on, space out. Spaced-out ambient and mid-tempo electronica."

DEF CON Radio
"Music for Hacking. Live from DEF CON 22 in Las Vegas."

Mission Control
"Celebrating NASA and Space Explorers everywhere."

Secret Agent
"The soundtrack for your stylish, mysterious, dangerous life. For Spies and PIs too!"

Deep Space One
"Deep ambient electronic, experimental and space music. A soundtrack for inner and outer space exploration."

Drone Zone
"Served best chilled, safe with most medications. Atmospheric textures with minimal beats."

Doomed
"Dark industrial ambient music for tortured souls."

thanks for the suggested radio stations, I'll surely check those out. As for VA and muting music, you can assign saying something like 'stop' or 'quiet' to a function that plays a short sound and just set that sound to 0 volume but also check the box that says finish all other audio currently playing (cant remember the exact words). Down side is this in not a pause, so you will not be able to carry on the same song from where you left off.

I was going to just leave BBC Iplayer on BBC R6 running in the background but I like the idea of a radio built in with ED news and stuff but I guess the music industry would cripple E:D with fees.

I would love an integrated, seamless music player. Unfortunately it's one of those things you will rarely see in games :/

I've recently listened to an episode of the Idle Thumbs podcast, wherein they talked about Euro Truck Simulator 2, and one of the remarks on that game's radio function mentioned how that was "one of these ideas that get brought up during development, but ultimately ditched. It's so cool that these devs decided to put that in there!" - Now, what exactly is it that they put in there?

ETS2 has a music player that swallows mp3 and ogg files as well as the playlist files (pls) of internet radio stations. As I said above, I don't know of any other game that supports the latter. And I'd love to have that in Dangerous. Now, I don't know about reading the GalNews, but that could be implemented by fading out the playlist temporarily while a news report plays. On deactivation of the radio, Dangerous' own soundtrack would fade in again.

Err... I don't think anyone here seriously considers an actual internet radio station maintained by Frontier... ;)
Actually, you know, that's the kind of thing fans would provide. I actually fully expect podcasts and a radio station springing up around ED over time. :)

Even the Grand Theft Auto series has an "Custon Radio Station" option where you can load MP3 files instead of playing the game-licensed music. I played Vice City for YEARS simply because I tied 200+ 1980s MP3s to the custom station.

I really wish FD would implement an integrated music player. I know they're quite proud of their original game soundtrack, but it's simply not for me.

i have been useing AIMP3 running at the same time as ED, you can have it on screen in the coxpit or running in the background. great to have QUEEN singing anouther on bite's the dust as the eagle gets blown to bit, problem beeing i am so bad a hitting anything never got a kill yet after 3 months still rated are you having a laugh !

Here's another idea, taking a completely different approach: All the tracks of Dangerous' soundtrack are associated with certain in-game events, right? How about implementing editable text files where you can simply write in your music files under the appropriate sections?

I'm picturing something like this:
Code:
[COMBAT]
quincy_jones_ironside.mp3
tchaikowsky1812.mp3

[DOCKING]
bluedanube.mp3
...and so on. The game would then alternate randomly between tracks from the lists and ED's own pieces for each of the in-game situations.
