Exploration is a waste of time

Are you actually using the scanner? You need to assign the scanner to a fire group, deploy weapons, and then "fire" the scanner. It will then reveal all "unexplored" objects within a radius of 500ls so that you can then fly to each one and scan them.

I know this might seem like a dumb question but...
..Can I use th basic scanner to target those newly appeared planets or do I need one of the other scanners?

ie ..
- Arrive in system.
- Scan system (discover things and acquire information to sell)
- Cycle through planets found
- Target each one in turn
- Fire same scanner I already have (Acquirring more information to sell)

Is this correct?

If I'm correct I believe it's also the case that more expensive scanners scan at larger ranges in the case of the broad scan, and potentially gather more detail in terms of targetted scanning

Please correct any misunderstandings :)

Thanks.

Whoever you sell your data to.

I'm not convinced this is true anymore.
Neither trading nor selling exploration data seem to give rep.

You fire the scanner (hold down the button) to discover objects.
To scan them, you just have to get close enough to them, and have them be almost directly in front, scanning is then passive, you don't fire the scanner again.
If you buy a detailed scanner, you'll get twice as much money for the scans you sell.

If you see Elite Dangerous as a game all about making money then Exploring isn't currently going to be for you. However, until you explore you won't find anything interesting. However, given that exploring is one of the things you can gain Elite Status for, I have every confidence that there will be interesting things to find. This is what I'm doing at the moment and it's proving very entertaining. You still get USS's popping up in systems a long way outside the Frontier of explored space. As the systems are all Anarchy you can happily behave as badly as you want without any fear of recriminations. I normally make a several thousands with a Kill Warrant scanner in each new system I find.

Partly true, exploration is awesome, the sights in the nebulae are great. There aren't any USS once you get way out there however. I'm reaching Perseus' arm (the arm outwards compared to ours), about 3'000 LY away from Sol and USS are a faint memory.
Can't wait to reach the Crab Nebula, "only" 4'000 LY left :p - wish me luck XD
