Hardware & Technical Windows 8.1

Suffered from a major malfunction last night and was forced to reinstall windows .. took the liberty of trying Windows 8 again - so far so good.

Still not convinced by Metro .. too .. odd to say the least, but I guess like anything new it takes some time getting used to it. All other software is working (thank you!) so I eagerly await the official 8.1 release .. cba with the install trial thanks to some of you who did that for me without success.

People actually sit at their computer while it's installing/downloading patches?

Well ... to be honest I watch the process whilst doing other things of course .. it's not like you could go out shopping or something as patching sometimes requires you to click things and/or login.

I tend to read something :)

I have tried 8.1 in a VM and....don't even bother. They said they have put the start button back in, but it's a con. The button is there but all it does is take you to a smaller version of the metro screen. I just can't see any reason to upgrade from 8 with classic shell.

Well W8 was a shock, but I did know there is a need to adopt as it very different.
Dual boot it.

But since I installed MS visual studio prof with W8 and worked with it I adopt so.
W8.1 has no hurry W8 is just fine.

How ever MSVC2013 and xboxone and W8.1 support direcx11.2
Bit curriouse about the tiled resource feature.

I'm running 8.1 ....no problems.
I love the back end of Win8. On an SSD its instant everything and is by far the fastest Windows ever built. Seems to be the most stable for me at least as well.

But the front end apps drive me nuts. I don't even have a touch screen so just let me turn of the app/button version and use the 'desktop only' version.

I installed Windows 8.1 a day or 2 after release and it installed fine. The major benefit is right clicking the start button to give you a lot more options that were sorely missing.

A hint for Windows 8 or 8.1 users to get some needed functionality back. Right click an open area on the desk top. Then left click on personalize, then left click on Change Computer Icons, now you can add the control panel and the computer icon back to the desk top, makes finding other drives simple, add remove programs is once again in an easy to find location etc.... it made windows 8 (8.1) a lot more tolerable and easier to use.

Hope this tips helps some.

i can now confirm that windows 8.1 is a steaming pile of @#$% (insert swear word of choice)

[LINK] helped me a lot get past the Metro interface. Added a windows 7 style button and start menu - loving Win 8 at the moment though from the posts above I dread installing 8.1 update

I'm planning to stick with Windows 7 for as long as possible. I'd miss the aero UI too much. Windows 8 just looks ugly to me. I find a little bit of eye candy goes a long way in smoothing the use of my laptop.

Cheers,

Drew.

I bought windows 7 a few years ago but I continued to use windows xp. It's only been three months that I use windows 7 instead of xp. So Windows 8 ...

im on a PC and windows 8 was someone else's idea.........:D

I plan to use windows 7 for the foreseeable future at least......

I'm also sticking with Win7 for as long as possible. Then I plan to jump ship to Linux completely (running it on our netbooks at the moment) unless Windows improves drastically.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread now that 8.1 has been released. I've got it downloading now. Fingers crossed for a smooth installation...

It appears every 2nd Windows release is Good - Win 7 is in that genre - as such I will skip Win 8 for the time being - besides - it's more designed for a touch screen interface.

Might go through a through monitors flying space ships - and fighting :)

It's definitely a step in the right direction - though you have to install from the Windows Store rather than Windows Updates, the ability to boot to desktop is hidden in the taskbar properties, and it installs like a whole new operating system (downloads almost 4Gb, backs up your profile, installs 8.1 fresh, merges in your profile again hopefully with everything still working like before).

One annoying quirk is that you have to set it up all over again like a new install, and the option to create or use an existing non-microsoft user account is disabled by default. If you have a user account that isn't a "something at hotmail dot com" online account or the such like, say for example your login is just "Steve", you only get the option to keep using that account if your computer is offline, or you try and fail to log in with an account (which you can do deliberately by typing in gibberish with an @ symbol in it).

It's probably because they're trying to push cloud synchronisation, and want everyone to use their cloud by default.
