Fit fuel scoops and explore infinitely they said... 7 red stars in a row [ragequit]

what i find absolutely fascinating is that folks dont just quit the game and do something else with their lives. i can understand that totally. games are not for everyone and this one more than many i suspect you either love or hate...

what they do is come onto the game forum and write a huge diatribe about how ive been really stoopid and its the games fault and it sucks and i quit so there... probably not just this one but all games forums although i have no other experience... what is that all about?

anyways, hopefully we will see the OP again slightly poorer but wised up about fuel scooping!

Yeah, my fault, I didn't familiarise myself with all this:

I should have known there was information in the galaxy map and I should have memorised all of the above numbers and letters and known what they all mean and then memorised the route and not just assumed there was simply no mechanic to refuel.

I'm all for risk v reward and I would have been happy to pay a premium to operate scoops on some stars. The assumption you know the information is there in the map and have a degree in astro navigation to interpret it is just a bit lame imo.

There is an explorers guide in my sig, check it out once you re-install :)

I encountered a region of space filled with unusable stars, brown dwarves mostly, on my trip to veil nebula west (Embarking from Njikan), this was in a hauler and just inside a week from starting gamma.

What you have to do is immediately begin looking for a refueling system as soon as your tank hits 50%, they're in there just have to plan your jumps with that in mind.

I'm truly sorry about what happened to you, but remember, this game has NO safety net.

If you didn't know that going in, well that sucks- but now you know - sh*t really can happen here, and 'Game Over' can potentially mean just that.

Some of us like that, and thrive on the feeling of risk.

Some of us don't.

If it's not for you, get on with that uninstall - if you can suck it up, log back in and try again...either way, hyperbolic posts on the forum may help you blow of some steam, but they'll also leave you looking a wee bit silly. :(

Stop giving him grief for something so trivial. Like none of you ever rage quit during a game? Dark Souls made me rage quit constantly (hence why I don't play it), even Elite has made me rage quit but purely due to my own idiocy. The old Nintendo games drove me to such frustration that several control pads still live at the bottom of my parents garden.

Maybe because they've invested hours of their time into it, and have a certain degree of passion when that is "lost" ;) ? It's great to see so much passion about the game, that means it's engaging and drawing people in - and that will be reflected in both +ve and -ve comments. (by the way, I'm not having a go at you at all, just thought I'd comment on the comment about the comment :D )

@nutter, Explorers guide is a great idea, we need to know those sorts of things!

Huh? You don't need to memorize all that...
Stuff in the main sequence = Ok
Ordinary giants = Ok
Everything else = Bad

It's simple.

btw. when did this "its the games fault, when i act like an idiot" become so popular?

Its always been popular, even from well before videogames were invented. You should see it here on the roads in Russia. Someone drives like an idiot, causes an accident, and then starts to blame the other person for the accident. Was almost hit by a woman driver (yes, she was blonde as well) the other day, who was driving, while talking on her mobile, and didn't check the junction when i had right of way. You learn to be fast on your horn over here.

I love Russians and the country, but accountability and responsibility tend to tricky concepts for them to grasp at times.

This is why there are so many car cam videos from Russia on YouTube. You need a record or else the other person will swear to all the gods that your car magically flew sideways into theirs.

Normally, I'd be snide and post something like: "Oh, you're leaving? May I appropriate your belongings as their usefulness will be null shortly?" However, we can't exchange non cargo items (yet) in Elite. So on that note, see ya! :)

I encountered one star once that was so hot I could not get close enough for scooping. It was fairly bright and relatively small. A white dwarf? Sorry did not pay attention in astro class :)

There is a legitimate underlying issue here, which many people are happy to ignore completely in their desire to reach their Sargasm...

A lot of information is both undocumented and unobtainable without first knowing about it.

f.ex: to know to ask which stars you cannot scoop fuel from you have to know that you can scoop fuel to start with... or you have to know there are some stars you cannot scoop from before you know to avoid those stars when needing to scoop fuel.

The game doesnt need to tell which stars those are (explorers into the unknown should usually assume the worst and prepare for it) but it should inform you of the possibility.

Perhaps a bigger issue though is all of the defunct information out about the game: such as the infamous "rescue NPC" who comes out to offer you fuel at exorbitant prices if you run out... that doesn't exist, but that turns up frequently if you google about running out of fuel in ED>

So beneath the rage quit there is a point....

Its apparently more fun to just aim for Sargasm though, which makes the game and player base look unappealing and vindictive... which i suggest shouldn't be your aim in life.

Have you considered counseling?

You need to remember practically only T, L, Y, the non-scoopables.

I'm treating the "ragequit" as an amusing meme now, basically whenever you have any basic complaint about a gameplay system that gets you killed, you need to append "ragequit".

I doubt it's ever meant to be serious...we are mostly grown adults after all!

-- Pete.

Yes you are correct, had the game a week, been destroyed 3 times, once by NPC pirates, doh! Once for reading my Galaxy map whilst 'loitering' over my launchpad - doh! Last time I hit boost instead of raise under carriage whilst leaving a station and ran into the wall! double doh!! I felt the 'ragequit urge' coming on briefly!

Failed a few missions because of that weird buggy mission abandon issue, - 'ragequit urge' grrr followed by 'fist through monitor urge', monitor still working, keyboard intact, still haven't quit and still having fun and the 'ragequit urge' has kept away the past few days I am pleased to say.

Disagree entirely, I'm personally sick of the whiney posts! If you ask for help there are lots of nice people here with suggestions, if you post moaning drivel they deserve the response they get.

I might be wrong (I rarely are) but I think he's a bit butthurt for something
maybe people didn't like his ideas...

Well at least now you know where you went wrong and freely admitted it
That's a first step.

Of course checking on the map the type of star of the system you want to jump in, isn't really difficult. For me

Those are the hallmarks of truly great games.

No one is giving him any grief over what happened, it's the rest that people are laughing about

When you click on a star in the Galaxy map, you see the stellar classifications of the star in that particular system (info tab in the map GUI).
If the stars have TT in their classification, they're unscoopable (T Tauri type stars). Brown Dwarf is the other unscoopable star type (L, T, Y & M6.5 or higher).

You weren't paying attention and got unlucky - learn from the experience and carry on. :)

Didn't read the rest of the thread, Mr Zieman hits the nail on the head right here, only need to add White Dwarfs which are DA, DB, DO and similar

The numbers don't make a difference to your ability to scoop the stars. Only the preceding letters are relevant. I've posted this excellent quote from Athan about 10 times in similar topics now:

FGE gathered some info and the conclusion was:

Can Fuel Scoop

Class = A
Class = B
Class = F
Class = G
Class = K
Class = M
Class = O

Cannot Fuel Scoop

Class = DA (White Dwarf)
Class = DC (White Dwarf)
Class = Y
Class = T
Class = L
Class = TTS
variable stars aren't scoopable
----

I can confirm Y/T/L/TTS as not scoopable myself. Given those are some form of Brown Dwarf and thus low mass, together with jump-in supposedly always being at the most massive object in the system, I think we can conclude that only the main star type matters for scoopability. If the main is unscoopable then nothing else in the system is going to be scoopable.

Learn your star types and plan a route that passes through systems that you actually can refuel from.

I hear ya, I went to Achenar in my hauler (in beta) with a crappy default drive and no scoop.
Lucky for me, having a crap jump distance also made me use less fuel.
I also had navigation option set to economy, not max jump range. DOH!

There is a bank of dead stars about half way and dead systems (no stations), which I only just made it through on my last dregs.

It took me over 2 hours to get there, to find Achenar locked along with the other 2 systems.

Trading in the stock hauler was out of the question due to its poor jump range and the systems are quite spread out with Achenar being locked.

2 and a bit hours later I trucked back through Sol and Lave then back to Aulin to make credits.

Got to say, my heart was in my mouth a lot on the way back knowing that dead bank was there.

Now I can do the same run in about 15mins in all of my ships.

The old Nintendo games drove me to such frustration that several control pads still live at the bottom of my parents garden.

This made me laugh, thanks for that Jonny.
