Eurogamer review up...

Because I paid for the game, and participated in Beta. And while I am deeply disappointed in the game, I am still holding on hope that it turns around. I'm also still learning many aspects of the game. So your response is supremely immature, more evidence of how this forum is so hostile to any view that falls short of full all out praise of the game. But inspite of your comments, given the holiday season, I figured I'd spoon feed you anyways.

I've predicted the initial reviews would be aweful. But I was clearly wrong or naive. Professional sites have no integrity as evidence by their plethora of misrepresentative reviews. But that's what I get for expecting them to look at a game objectively as I have. Then again, I've probably played the game alot more than all the ED fluff reviewers combined.

So unless someone says the game sucks they are all a bunch of sold out?
Any hyper negative review would come from a CoD player that thought this was gonna be World of Spacecraft and had NO idea of what the KS pledge was about
Reminds me of someone, actually quite a few people

yes but only because there are loyal kickstarters pushing it with 10/10s. without them it prbly. be at 4 or 5 max.

As usual the fanboi 10s typically balance out the hater 0s. If you take all the 0s and all the 10s out then you probably find that its about a 7 or 8, which is, in my opinion, just about right.

Im really sorry you are so disappointed with the game terminatahx, but clearly you are in the vast minority in your opinion of the game. Thats fine, obviously they can't please everyone, and this definitely isn't the type of game that is for everyone. However to question the credibility and integrity of the reviewers simply because they (like most it would seem) disagree with your position is petty and childish.

The two things with metacritic personal scores are:

1) they are useless in any way imaginable
2) they are emotional reviews. What I mean is, the person gives a vote that is HIS own feelings for the game. It's actually worth reading the comments more than the scores

I see this sentiment a lot, but when it comes right down to it, especially after a month or so after release, I typically find myself agreeing with the cumulative metacritic scores more than any other source.

This might be the most comprehensive and balanced review I have read so far, I agree with most of it - except for the overall score. In its current state, I would not rate Elite : Dangerous higher than 6 or maybe 7 out of 10.

Mostly because when you have progressed beyond the "ohh and ahh" first impression the game is woefully shallow feature-wise, more or less a repetitive grind for credits and/or reputation if you are interested in progression. And that won't do in the long run.

Don't get me wrong, I am having lots of fun, but I can see myself getting a bit bored soon with the repetitiveness.

All games are repetitive and "grind based". Europa universalis , Skyrim, diablo starcraft 2 etc...some core mechanics are repeated ad libitum.Even hardcore aircraft simulator has repetive scenarios when the main goal is keep the plane in the sky. I agree that Elite needs a lot works and balance, but even in it's "vanilla state" can guarante 100s hours of fun (if you like this kind of game). So, a 8 is good for a game so vast and immersive but with some flaws in some aspects. It could have been easilly a 9/9,5 with refined missions and co-op. We must wait next months and see how FD keeps its promises :)

5.8 is generous for ToR... more of a single player game than an mmo, it went f2p in about 6 months because it was a ghost town, and the f2p microtransaction system is predatory even by EAs notorious standards. 7.5 might be a bit generous for Wildstar, but not too far off.

sounds like you are wishing for a positive score. I'm indifferent. I have my views, but don't care if others agree or not. I'm wishing for honest reviews that don't mislead people either way (positive or negative). If the game is garbage, people deserve to know the truch. If the game is truly outstanding, people deserve to know the truth. Honest reviews is all that I am asking, I'm not a fanboy.

So far we appear to be getting fairly balanced reviews by people who have been playing the game for a while in beta, and thus are familiar with it. Of course you say that you don't care if others agree or not, but when reviews come out relatively positive you are quick to dismiss them as corrupt. When forum members disagree with you, you also appear to neg-rep them. This does not testify of someone who has a rational take on the matter and does not care if others agree or not (I'll await your neg-rep for this post :p).

Which is precisely what we are getting it would seem. The game obviously is a far, far cry from garbage. What it is at the moment is an outstanding canvas with a ton of potential, but some rough edges that will likely get smoothed out over time as is typical of the gaming industry these days for better or worse. For people that enjoy space sims anywhere between 7 and 8 seems perfectly reasonable.

Where are all the people that said this game would be crucified by the reviewers now I wonder?
Frontier massively improved things during the short Gamma period, and even during the last few days of Gamma they made some significant fixes & additions (e.g. enabling faction reputation, adding a route planner, fixing trading, adding more missions). They performed a minor miracle, probably due to some ridiculous working hours (at least 16 hour days plus weekends seem likely).

I was one of those people who were very worried about whether the game would be at all ready for Release. They just about managed to get it into a playable state for Release, and I made several posts/threads indicating I was happy with the way things had improved.

But ED has clearly still been rushed for release (there are many bugs & balance problems + still not enough mission variation), and that is IMHO reflected in it getting 80% on average (see MetaCritic) rather than the 90% it WOULD have got if delayed by a few more months. I hope Frontier think that getting the sales money upfront was worth it in the long term.

I don't think it was about the money as such. Every company needs to obey the cardinal rule: Just Ship It. This means that a deadline needs to be set. This may happen a year in advance, and may well be arbitrary in blissful ignorance of unforeseen issues that inevitably raise their head along the way. But there needs to be a deadline --any deadline-- lest features creep and targets drift.

To be honest I think we'll continue to get balanced reviews.

Given a decent amount of playtime Elite Dangerous is probably a really very interesting game to review.

There's a lot to say about ED, both positive and negative. I see it as a game that a reviewer (who's not completely jaded!) can really get their teeth into. There's potentially a lot to write about on what ED is and where ED could be given more time and a lot of angles on it. Not only that it's the first of a genre which all thought was probably dead, publishers certainly.

As I say I expect lots of interesting and balanced reviews going forward. Overall positive 7-8s probably (but I might be a bit biased there).

Oh it was DEFINITELY about the money: If they missed releasing ED this year, they would have failed to meet the sales estimates they originally gave to their stockmarket investors. That could have spooked them, meaning massive fall in stock price = massive loss of funding available for ED. Plus not making a December release means missing the lucrative Xmas sales period, and potentially wasting all the PR effort (money) they had been ramping-up in anticipation.

Potentially FD would have been unable to pay their developers any further, and thus be unable to keep developing the game. Harsh realities of the commercial world. It's not that they want to be rich, but rather they need to make money to keep paying the bills, so they can keep making the game.

One thing Publishers are good for is giving you money to keep developing the game. (It might not be the game you really want to make, but at least you're getting paid.) Frontier avoided publishers, but ended-up having to deal with stockmarket investors instead...

This is pretty much it, not many small company want to make people redundant. There's more at stake here than just review scores.

well I just played another 7hr stint. its 5am and I definatly need to sleep for work. the problem is I work for myself, and after an unlucky last 10minutes in game losing my ship+cargo of gold. im sat here thinking maybe just one more run...to recoup some cash... the game is very addictive.

if we could speed things up when entering an out posts proximity that would help... it can become quite tedious as its unavoidable... still love the game though...
the more people that support the game the more we can expect from the developers... so the good reviews will help push things in a positive direction... imo

Spot on! I played the original Elite on my ZX Spectrum and I backed E: D during PB days, but I just don't get the handwaving of some members here: "it's supposed to be hard", "no need for X, use your imagination", "you're doing it wrong", "Braben wanted it this way so it's perfect". This attitude is damaging to the community, the game and its future.

Playing the game early on, I had the time to understand its mechanics, so this is not a problem for me. On the flip side, I burned out and the lack of variety has killed the interest for me.

I'm afraid E: D is condemned to a niche status. This may or may not be enough to allow for expansion. Personally I hope it gets expanded because I like its core.

Its ok they still have 12months before StarCitizen hits Alpha. By that time they should be able to put some good things in the game. They have a good base to build from. They just have to do it fast, or they will be crushed by the shear scope and flare of Star Citizen. Personally I don't agree that this game has a soul. I think its too mechanical and sterile. They need to inject a soul and personality Via a living universe. Right now its just text everywhere you go and great graphics. Even the sun is not scary at all eg no solar storms or anything. Basically its sterile; the space is not scary. The only thing you have to worry about is interdiction. Especially psychotic Player interdiction. But they still have a lot of time. Their game is great. Just not to par for 2015 standards. But I am enjoying it. :) I have to thank them for making a good space flight sim game.... all these rubbish FPS games were rotting our gaming community. All kids know these days is shoot to kill. And they gloat over it... thinking they are hot stuff, when they can't even lift a 30lbs dumbbell. :)

I jumped to Ed straight to TOR and you are not even close here. f2p is actually pretty decent and raiding is awesome, ED has to take priority though. I'd give TOR probably 7.

I think the reviewer had a few solid points, but that overall the review was a bit shallow. I'm sure I've played more than the reviewer, as I've been in since PB, and would myself give 6/10. Reasons being that the game has a solid core, but doesn't currently deliver on the depth of game that it promised to be. If FD stopped all future development now, I'd likely lose interest in playing soon.

So, it all hinges on where FD takes this game. Fix some bugs, add some depth... this game could be 9/10 for each of us, even with our (assumed) wildly different play interests & styles.

The game is ready, if you feel like it isn't you can wait a few months but honestly discussing the choices a business takes (or has to take) without having a clue of what you are talking about is a slippery slope toward silliness

Leave him alone, THAT was my "wowkiddie detection test"
Works all the times, now you know how much his opinion is really worth eh eh

Why don't you boost? Or are you talking about supercruise? If it's taking you more that 6-8 minutes to go 100KLs, then maybe you want to watch some advanced travelling tutorials, I personally use the 'spiralling' approach detailed here (hell I even though I invented it eh eh like, oh well)
