Sol the Great disappointment

You're quitting because 1 in 400 billion systems isn't as fancy as you'd like it? What a silly reason for a tantrum.

Yeah, I can think of probably 2 or 3 other reasons to quit and I would never touch the kickstarter after what Frontier did, but Sol is not on the list :)

Just passed through Sol. Parked my Cobra at Titan City and purchased a Type-6. Made some quatloos to cover the insurance and now I'm on my way out again. The Gorbachev station is absolutely beautiful with its parks. Certainly worth a look and a few screen caps as well.

I'm a beta backer and during all the testing we were told that SOL was going to be a jewel, something great and that's why they were keeping SOL out of the testing phases. I just went there today and it's just the same thing just much more stations but all the same, SOL has nothing to differentiate it from the other system other than I actually know the names of the planets, serious disapointment, I'll continue playing Elite cause is a pretty good game but won't be buying expansions, I'm sure FD is saving some of the great stuff on SOL for an expansion and that's just a plain lie.

FD lost a customer (except if they come up with a new roller coaster tycoon game :D)

Yeah, the "Free Sol permits" is a sad joke. At least they delivered on that promise. Once you get over the beautiful planetary eyecandy, there is nothing spectacular about SOL. I left there after a day of exploration. I'm over 200LY away in a system that has outstanding trading, mining and combat opportunities. FD should be ashamed of themselves for such putting this out there as a perk.

Here's how they could have made SOL "special"
- have rares that can only be bought from SOL.
- Have more high population, high value, high demand trading
- Have rare loudouts that can only be found in SOL
- Waive insurance for all Beta backers that die in SOL
- Space station designs unique to SOL
- Have unique corporate presence in SOL; such as a Chevron Refueling depot, or a McDonalds platform.

It's an English game, so it would be BP and Wimpy platforms.

I also will never buy anything from FD, but I think expansions were promised to beta backers for free?

there was the opportunity to buy a lifetime pass. i don't think there will be free dlc just because you bought into beta.

What - no city lights? That's going to look rather dumb. Am sure even in the year 3200, lights would be visible from space...

Lights on populated planets across the galaxy are still on their way. They won't just be for Sol.

They lost something in you, assuming you do leave, and it's something I doubt they are going to miss.

Really, threads like this from people who are clearly either just trolling or are in fact simply limited in the intelligence department just need to go somewhere where they can get the credit they deserve. I recommend a new subforum called "The Blackhole". Any thread that is worth zero discussion should be moved there by the mods ASAP. No one can claim their threads are being deleted. They still get to have their idiotic little rants about nothing. But best of all, the majority of people here with functioning brain cells don't have to see them unless they feel like having a laugh.

Forums these days have become a cesspool of drivel empowered by a combination of anonymity, loneliness, and angst. It's got to stop. Negativity is fine as long as it has inherent value and provides useful discussion, but negativity for negativity's sake or simply "Because I can get away with it" is just trash and should be treated as such.

Calling people liars because a statement they made about something they are creating doesn't match your own delusion of what it should be is rude and degenerate behaviour. It should not be tolerated.

If this post warrants yet another warning about breaking forum rules or a ban, then so be it. It needed to be said.

Marry me.

If the above statemet of truth would earn to poster a warning, I volunteer to take that warning instead.
The above post has more truth then the entire forum had the past week, it should be stickied and FD should make that "black hole" subforum.

Sol is the Home world. The Home system. by definition, its the oldest Human system in the Galaxy (that we know of)

Seeing as how its so old, and packed full of history, at some point, it reaches a point of stasis: its grown all it can grow, its developed all it can develop, its harvested all the resources it can harvest, etc... and there comes a point when everyone will protest any farther progress:

No!! you cant build that colony there!! thats the apollo11 landing site! NO! not there either, that apollo15! site!!

NO!! you cannot terraform Europa!! look at what we did to the native microorganisms of Mars!!! one planetary genocide is enough!

NO!!! you cant build a starbase there!! pioneer 1, 2, galilleo 1,2, Fuchida 1,3,5,6, and.. and.. oh yeah! and "titan or BUST" still orbits there!!

.. and so on. Stagnation results. The only way to go at that point is.. out there. and we did.

Sol is stagnant. Relatively unchanged in over 600 years. A massive community and archive of history too heavy in its own weight to ever shift or change. Thus it produces little. it receives. consumes. other stellar systems strive to satisfy ITS needs and demands.

Not to make it sound like some evil beast... nono! simply a fact of a Home World. THE Homeworld. If we ever contact other star faring species out there, their Homeworld may be much the same... IF theirs was fortunate to survive like ours has.

That said.. I would like to have seen battlefleets of the federal Line arrayed around the military headquarters of Mars, or something to that effect... as a visual "dang! i wont want to mess with this system!!" sense of awesome. But who knows... maybe that fleet is locked away in the Sirius system.

Hear, hear.

Look at our own planet. Mesapotamia was the cradle of civilisation, and look at what we have done to it (that's the Iraq/Kuwait/Syria area, for you non-history/geography aces.)

Why we think the Sol system will fare any better when we eventually leave it is beyond me.

If anything I'd imagine seeing a system full of radioactive slag in the year 3300.

First thing that I did after the release was running to Sol system. I was tiny disappointed to be honest by how the planets looks like. Still, it was nice to enter Jupiter rings :)

I like the way sol is an insignificant spec in a monstrous galaxy. Quite realistic. In the Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy, earth famously has a one word entry: 'harmless', subsequently updated to 'mostly harmless' once Ford had spent some time there. Sound familiar?

guys, the op has a point here.

he doesnt talk about planets being different. I like the idea with the handcrafted stations or other handcrafted things just for SOL. And actually i also thought devs would take some more time and imagination for that system.

Why not having special coms when entering the system e.g. greeting new visitors perhaps even with some voice. easyily done. or special music score. easily done too.

Why not having a mars station and you are greeted by President Schwarzeneggers head!

I teared up when I dropped out of SC in Jupiters ring, but that has very little to do with ED and was more so related to me being a big space nerd, and never seeing Jupiter looking so good in a game before (excluding space engine).

Sol, as a whole, was lacking. Nothing special or unique about it other than the planet skins.
