Every time I play Elite I find myself quitting rather disappointed

Would now like to apologise to you lot for whining.
Took your advice, traveled out a bit and went mining. Finally getting fun out of E:D again, already upgraded from a hauler to an adder.

I guess I was just being a bit of an idiot, focusing too much on trading.
So thanks to all of you.

Glad you found your fun again CMDR, and no need to apologise to anyone.

I have been here since PB and the forum is (in the vast majority) full of very helpful people, if people post in a reasonable way in their OP.

Your OP was not a whine / rage quit post and many people understand your frustrations, I have not been making much trading recently either.

I am glad that you are staying around, I am glad you are enjoying it again, and I thank everyone who posted here that helped to make that happen.

How can mining be less profitable than trading? :) Mining is pure profit and you don't need to invest in anything else but a refinery and a mining laser. If you find a decent system with metallic planet rings you can earn 200-400k credit per hour. I know you can earn more with trading but than you need huge cargo hold and credit balance "to play" with. With mining its enough to have a hauler, adder or a cobra.

And yes... you might just burned out. Take a break.

Per time put in mining is really bad worse lol than trading. Mining requires that you actually find a good mineral or metal to sell for a good profit. Everything you bring is is profit after paying for your refinery and laser BUT it is pennies compared to bounty hunting or trading etc. Unless you get lucky mining it doesn't pay. (OR you just really like to sit there forever mining a rock and scooping) then if that is the case by all means have at it. But it is way less profitable over all than trading. (in a comparison of time vs profit)

Yes. Use your imagination.

Hey look..... An example of every system in ED. All looking the same. LOL Joke .... sort of. Got to admit there is nothing different no matter where you go accept the colors of the suns and planets. even the stations are exactly the same. So yeah you REALLY have to use A LOT of imagination.

Use it or lose it.

Pirate.
The Hauler can be a great little pirate ship with the right kit and skill. Practice running cold to sneak up on ships, start with unshielded ships and blast the drives with a gimballed pulse or beam laser until the ship is adrift and then attach a Hatch Breaker Limpet and let the booty flow forth. A quick scooping later and you sneaky stealth into the station to make your sale.
It's a rush. Anytime I get bored of the tedium of one thing a course of pirating spices things right back up and before long I'm so surged with adrenaline that I have to go back to something boring. :D
Try it sometime.

Trading is a lot better since the latest server fix for it.

If not trading then maybe go with the Eagle and do some bounty hunting.
The Eagle is cheap but you should have one free anyway and its pretty good.

Dazzuh, sell the hauler, buy a sidewinder and pimp it up, then go do bounty hunting where the NPCs are mining - you'll make a load of money in no time at all and have fun shooting them down... That got me a cobra in about three days.

Haven't being following the thread, but just dropped by to post a big thumbs up for this. The internet needs more of these kind of posts!

thre-- three days?
Someone pointed me in the direction of mining, after I bought an adder I set out to mine again and included a bit of bounty hunting. I guess I got kinda lucky as I ran into an anaconda being pounded by feds in a resource extraction site - helped them nail him and made 60k from it.
shortly after another wanted anaconda comes along, this time with a 90k bounty, pretty much the same thing happened.
On top of that I had a cargo hold with some platinum, can confirm was a good run, already flying around in a cobra :p
So I'm now basically doing a mix of bounty hunting and mining, bounty hunting is tons of fun.

I'd clear save!

Go back to the Freagle, bounty hunt and explore. Put a couple of tons of a rare commodity in the hold and just head off in some random direction for 150ly. Don't concern yourself with grinding profit and simply enjoy d*cking about in a fun ship

Remember, what's fun to you isn't fun to everyone else. There's only so much of the same thing over and over again that I don't really want to do I can take. And I know I'm not alone.

Do the things you enjoy, then. Why there has to be a debate about this, I just don't understand.

Like any quality product, ED should be savored in moderation. To avoid indigestion

How true. But Christmas is the time to over-indulge. I'm enjoying trying different things, some less to do with playing the game and more to do with building up trade databases. Variety is the thing that works for me. The one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work very well in my experience.

Every game, every activity life has a start a middle and an end. I love this game but im sure i wont be playing it for the rest of my life. Whenever that point come i will have had value for my money many times over.

What i promise i wont is to make a massive post telling everybody about my choice and why i have made it and how its so terribly unfair and not my fault but everyone elses and therefore drop a huge guilt trip on everybody else. I will just quietly fade away and enjoy the good memories and the friendships i have made along the way...

An outbreak of common sense!
