I Have A Dream

Picture the scene you have been playing for a few hours trading, smuggling, bounty hunting what ever when all of a sudden you get an incoming message from a faction you are friendly with at system XYZ that is approx 100 light years from your current location and they are under attack. The message dose not go into detail its a SOS and a call to arms, now you can either say "oh well that sucks good luck" then get on with your day, or you can stop what you are doing open your map and plot the quickest route you can to jump there.

Once you jump into the system you get a further update that a particular unfriendly faction has gathered up a task force and are planning on taking over your faction that you are friendly with. You are giving the location of the task force and as you are one of the first on scene your job is to slow them down for as long as possible until reinforcements come. What happens after that will all depend on how many players and NPC are friendly with said faction and how many ships they can gather in such short notice...

Now here is the other side of the story again you have been playing for a few hours doing the usual trading runs bounty hunting etc when you get a message from a certain faction you are friendly with they are planning to meet up at system x at a certain time in order to build up a task force to use force to expand their influence on a system called XYZ.. Now you as a player can simply say "well good luck" or you can meet up with the task force in order to jump into system XYZ and blitz what ever opposition you come accross....

What do you think could this sort of game play work?

That sounds AMAZING, but also sounds like a game called EVE.

Sorry this is Elite Dangerous a trading/flight simulation where you have adventure and make money, not a Star Fleet adventure where you are paying to play EVE Online.

I do not mean to criticize your idea, it sounds great, just not in this game

I've played Eve for nine years, but I never had that kind of interaction with NPC factions in Eve. The similarity to Eve eludes me.

Great idea op - actually, something similar was indicated in the capital ships trailer a few months back.

Quick, team up. Someone has a great idea how to improve the game, let's all say no, that could be awesome and would add depth and story, and dismiss it with a pointless Eve comparison.
If you want to play Space Truck Simulator, you can do that today already. All. Day. Long.
Others want more depth. That won't take away from your pleasures, just add to theirs.

Great idea OP!

Great but not in this game for what actual reasons?

LOL, is this guy serious? Sandbox must come without shovels or buckets.

I have never played EVE so cant comment on its gameplay as a new player to elite dangerous and what others have said in this thread I was just thinking of more ways to add depth to the current game play. There has to be more to it than kill, mine, steal or trade for more credits for this game is to survive.. The above example was just a way that I could think to bring players into contact with each other IF THEY SO WISH.. Also to give some meaning to being friendly and allegiance to certain factions again IF YOU SO WISH..

In Evochron Mercenary, that is called a "Distress Call" mission.

It could be "XYZ system has a sudden shortage of food! Send <x> tons of <y food items> within <time limit> and get paid <some enormous figure>" or "Pilots ejected in XYZ system, need help to rescue them within <time limit>. Payment: <some huge figure>".

The idea was to get people going to help the NPCs out. But, it got to the point where there were so many of these, that many players turned off Distress Calls just to continue doing whatever they were doing :)

I played EVE as well, and do you not have guilds in that game? and cannot they call you to arms?

I do not suppose you read the book that came with Elite Frontier, probably not, but it gives you an idea of the story in that.

Great but not in this game for what actual reasons?

In some ways I like the idea, its great, but how long will it take them to implement such a change in the game. Personally this game is about self achievement more than anything else. I bet not many people actually read the book that came with Elite Fronter

I have no problem with a game that uses dynamics like that. For example, if a player requests help, Towing to a station, you could either respond to help, or just finish him/her off. Or something on your lines where distress calls take a player somewhere different.

Personally I prefer the Thargoids dynamics where they could just pull you out of hyperjump and attack you. There is a lot of depth in this game, its just too many people just see the grind and not the possibilities at their finger tips

A "call to arms" mission like that would be exactly the sort of thing that would get me out of playing single player online and into open play. Just think of the fun it would be having to decide whether to ditch your current mission and chase the big money opportunity of if it's better just to see your current mission through.

This is a joke, right?

STOP THE PRESSES - I've just realised ED has spaceships in it! I don't think anyone else has noticed this OBVIOUS CLONE from Eve.

We don't want spaceships in OUR game, thank you very much!

Close one. Narrowly avoided being like Eve there. Phew.

This sounds like what is already implemented into the game with the bulletin board missions.. We are looking for weapons or food etc.. I was thinking more of away to bring pvp content into the game with some reason for it..

What's wrong with WAR being declared between the Empire and the Federation? I think that will bring more pvp.

Hence I mentioned NPCs. Eve only had that kind of op in player driven corps/ alliances. From my understanding, the op was getting at events like in the capital ship trailer.

As for calls to arms - we already have that in ED, be it NPC driven (Sorbago, Durius) or player driven (Lugh etc...).

It would take much less development time than walking on planets, and what ever happened in that book is utterly irrelevant and redundant.

Nothing wrong with war between empire and federation and if this does bring more pvp then great.. My idea was more simple and local idea between perhaps factions that are close to each other as apposed to galactic war. The idea that you have been helping a faction for whatever length of time and now that you are friendly with them they are now asking you to help defend them in their time of need..
