Hardware & Technical Who is holding out for the Rift Consumer edition?

What graphics card will we need to run the new Rift in 1080p? for me this is the base line resolution as I think below that and the text is hard to read.

I will have an R9 280X (I can run two in crossfire if required), so that will be 6GB GDDR5. More than enough I think to chew the 1080p x2 for the OR requirements and 4k

The important thing about these cards is

GPU 1100/Boost:1150 MHz Core Clock
28 nm Chip
2048 x Stream Processors
Video Memory 3072 MB Size
384 -bit GDDR5
6400 MHz Effective

The 384bit bus makes a huge different to the fill rate.
DX12 support, Mantle API (does Elite support this yet, last I checked it said pending?)

I'm not sure if crossfire is any different than SLI from Nvidia but the system does not double up the ram on their cards, I've 2x 970's in my system IIRC from what I've read in the past the way it works each card renders alternate frames and only recognises the 4gb ram not the total 8gb combined.

I personally dont understand the appeal of the rift so early in its development.. The low res simply sucks and although its cplteley immersive, the quality of the visuals is just not there yet.

That, and it makes using a hotas tricky.

Totally not true. That is the entire point of a HOTAS setup, to keep pilot workload down by keeping their hands on the throttle and stick and provide most common functions there. Once you've flown a few times you quickly memorize all the controls ane since they are "right at your fingertips" you don't need to look at them.

I can't speak for the Saitek sticks as I only use Thrustmaster, perhaps the button layout on the Saitek is not ergonomic but I doubt it. That being said I totally fly through the (pun intended) controls with my Warthog. I use the thumb hat on the stick to control the UI cursor and since it has a press feature, it also functions as the select button. The second the menus are up at the login screen I never need to look outside the rift unless I want to chat.

The warthog throttle even has a full mouse control (cursor) laptop style stick on the throttle for the Galaxy maps. Not sure if the other bands do but they all copy each other so likely.

As for visuals, there simply is no comparison due to the experience. The first time you dock at a space station in the rift or blast around a platform you'll be hooked. The experience is just that good. The head tracking is perfect and completely destroyed my ability to use TrackIR ever again. I can't even play DCS A-10 anymore as it just feels horrible.

ED due to the dark nature of the screens doesn't look that bad at all in the rift you totally get used to it. Other games like DCS A-10 and others outdoor sims like that look terrible however.

But either way, there is no way I can play without rift now, it, it was and is a game changer. Let's just hope they get the CV right or at least sell an upper model with max res. possible.

Cheers

I'm currently using a 37" tv (1080p) myself and two 560TIs in SLI. The game looks amazing on maxed out settings. I use voice attack and will be getting a t.flight in a few days to replace my old flight stick. I'd like to get the CV1 to complete the experience. I don't know what the requirements are, but I doubt I could run it with my current rig. I'll have to look into it more, but I may just have to settle for a trackIR setup.

Waiting for the retail too, can't come soon enough. Got the readies set aside for the Rift itself and a healthy budget for upgrades if required :)

hopefully get a solution to the keys issue

Yeah, its called VoiceAttack. But personally I don't need it. I have buttons mapped to my headset buttons and everything else required on my 360 Controller. I have no need to ever use the keyboard in Elite Dangerous.

I admire your willpower to hold out for a CV2. Have you experienced the Oculus Rift at all?

I have a DK2 but stopped using it almost as soon as I got it because the resolution/pixelation is awful (game looks much prettier in a big screen TV than with a phone screen stuck right before your eyes) AND because I realized that I don't like gaming while not being able to see anything around me - makes taking notes awkward etc.

I used to think that I'd get back into thr Rift when the higher quality resolution version was out, but am now not sure. I bought a TrackIr 5 a week ago, and love it. Sure, it's not as immersive as a Rift, but it has several major advantages over the Rift:
- Don't need to take it off to do anything out of game - takes notes, change music, surf the forums etc.
- No wires connected to the receiver/my head (the Rift's short wires irritated me a bit, and felt constricting)
- No loss of resolution / pixelation (should be fixed with the consumer version)
- Easier to connect/disconnect to the game
- More comfortable - the Rift "encourages" sweating if you play in a warm room, and is obviously a lot heavier

Now, the TrackIr can't touch the Rift's sense of immersion, but on all other fronts the much cheaper TrackIr has it beat. So, long story short: I'm no longer sure I'll get the consumer version of the Rift.

Voice Attack is a non starter for me, I tend to game in the living room on a gaming laptop so calling out commands isn't going to go down well with the rest of the family. I'm more concerned about DCS where even my X52 isn't enough buttons.

As for waiting for CV2, I've paid the early adopter tax far too many times to feel the need to jump on the next big thing anymore. It's just VR, very well done VR that stands a chance of actually going mainstream, but it's not like it hasn't been round for donkeys years in other forms. I'll wait till they work the kinks out of CV1 and prove it has legs over and above being supported by investment capital. Until then my TrackIR will serve me fine.

Would be interesting to know what your eyesight and IPD settings are? Have had over twenty people try my DK2 over the last month, only two people had your reaction, both of them were as blind as bat.. no joke. Took me about a week to find the right settings for my eyesight and ED.

So you still own a DK2?

I am definately considering rift. Currently am happily playing on 3x 21" monitors and it looks good but vr has been something I've been wanting to do since...well since there was such a thing as vr.

Am I the only one here waiting for the competitors?

I want nothing to do with the facebook rift.

Quite possibly. I may be too jaded to buy before it or its competitors produce a proven, mature product, but sticking one to Mark Zuckerberg doesn't rate high in technology decisions for me :)

I'm waiting until the consumer version has been released and thoroughly reviewed.

Then I may buy one, from a competitor.

I can't drink anymore while playing this game. Every time I do, I find myself on the Oculus Rift web site at 4:30am about to hit the "Order Now" button.

Waiting for release is tough, but I'd hate to buy one now, have it arrive a month from now (they say new orders take 2-4 weeks to ship), and then have them release the commercial version a couple of months later.

as much as it pains me, yes i am waiting for the consumer version, and i will be getting it day one. Honestly i try to forget about the OR for months at a time because if i keep looking up new info everyday it makes the launch seem so far away.

Not really holding out since I've been playing on DK2 since soon after they first shipped - but I will certainly be getting a CV1.
There's still a long way to go for DK2 - future VR headsets will be vastly superior. But there's no comparison between VR and none-VR. It's like comparing a phone screen to a big screen TV for movie watching. You can compare resolutions till the cows come home, but there's only going to be one winner.
