COMBAT: The Most Annoying Things (List)

Hi,
I have compiled some of the most annoying things ever that takes the fun out of Elite Dangerous. I hope something can be done about it.

1. NPC jumps away under 10% hull
2. Get ONLY 800Cr for killing Elite Cobra (My repairs costed 7000+)
3. Ships ramming head on (Almost seems on purpose)
4. Annoying NPCs and CMDRs "hogging the target" (Impossible to fire without them hit)
5. Multicannon and Beam (Those are great weapons, but silly ships are barging into the line of fire, guess what happens next?)
6. Feds barging in and stealing kills
7. NPC barging in and stealing kills
8. CMDRs barging in and stealing kills (My personal hate)
9. Bug: Getting wanted for shooting at wanted ships
10. NPC ships asking for cargo when I have none, then firing at me
11. Ships attacking me are clean (Not Anarchy)
12. Shooting back at ship shooting at you and getting Wanted

Or summarised: combat is too challenging. I want an "I Win" button. :p

Who said anything about and I win button and why must people like you perpetuate this notion that people want the game to be dumbed down
. is that all you got from the OP?

Honestly if you don't agree that there are some very valid points in the OP (which there are) then why post what you did at all? your comment adds zero to the discussion..

Too many of these types of pointless and lame posts on these forums as far as I'm concerned.

Hi,
I have compiled some of the most annoying things ever that takes the fun out of Elite Dangerous. I hope something can be done about it.

1. NPC jumps away under 10% hull

Annoying but retreat is a perfectly legitimate tactic for survival - subtarget the FSD, it does work as I did this to an Elite Anaconda and was able to finish it off (glorious fight that was!)

2. Get ONLY 800Cr for killing Elite Cobra (My repairs costed 7000+)

Always check the bounty value of the ship before engaging - I normally look for something else/fly away if it's low like 800Cr.

3. Ships ramming head on (Almost seems on purpose)

Jink left/right/up/down - lateral thrusters. Keep your ship under control. Know when it's better to have lower speed (blue range and lower) and when it's better to use boost/higher speed.

4. Annoying NPCs and CMDRs "hogging the target" (Impossible to fire without them hit)
5. Multicannon and Beam (Those are great weapons, but silly ships are barging into the line of fire, guess what happens next?)

Know when to stop firing. Your gripes happened to me all the time at first, then I developed an instinct for when to take my finger off the trigger. Believe me it works!

6. Feds barging in and stealing kills
7. NPC barging in and stealing kills
8. CMDRs barging in and stealing kills (My personal hate)

FDEV have recently changed NPC's stealing kills - and I think they'll work on a system of "amount of damage done" in the future.
As for players "stealing kills" - that's life/death I'm afraid. You could try to do the same to them.

9. Bug: Getting wanted for shooting at wanted ships

This is either a genuine bug or it is intended behaviour - i.e. you're shooting at a certain faction member, and the polic chap happens to be a member of that same faction and doesn't like you shooting at the same faction member. I haven't come to a conclusion on this yet, but I reckon it's more likely to be a bug, as the red gets reset if you SC out of and back into the area.

10. NPC ships asking for cargo when I have none, then firing at me

Once they hit you they become Wanted, then you can blow them out of the skies. Always, ALWAYS, let them get one hit on your shields!

11. Ships attacking me are clean (Not Anarchy)
12. Shooting back at ship shooting at you and getting Wanted

Again, always, ALWAYS, let those ships get a hit on your shields! If you're just shooting at them BEFORE they get a hit on you, then what you describe will happen - YOU get the Wanted status! As soon as they get a ping on your shields, THEY become a legit target in the eyes of this harsh universe's laws.

OK (more constructively): I disagree. Real combat is messy. Ask any soldier. Real bounty hunting is messy. Ask any bounty hunter. Opponents will run away, panic and act stupid, try and take you down with them in a blaze of glory when cornered, and what appeared at first like a simple job will turn out to cost you more in time, ammo and resources than the bounty is worth. And then you face competition from other bounty hunters or indeed law enforcement who want to bag the bad guy themselves. And there's jurisdiction boundary issues, and issues with the risk of innocent bystanders strolling into the gunfight you are responsible for initiating when you thought you could take your prep down quickly and safely.
.
Meanwhile there's muggers who will try and kill you without knowing the contents of your wallet, or even after you handed over your wallet. Criminals, eh? No sense of fairness, justice or reason.
.
That is real life. If we want realism in this game (which, I know in a SciFi game is going to be for a given value of 'realism', but you know what I mean) then you're going to have to put up with the messy, unpredictable, random and sometimes outright unfair behaviour and turn of events that occur in real life. Because real life is complicated like that, and a realistic game will reflect that. Combat is not going to be logical, linear, sanitised. It's going to be messy.

For me, combat is very fun and profitable. I usually earn 60K at a nav beacon. I also do bulletin boards but trading is not my thing. I have the best gimballed beam and multi cannons. REpairs and ammo in the Cobra is crazy expensive. Everytime a ship escapes without getting a bounty, that is a loss. But to summarise: I do combat 99% of the time. I am hoping to do more trading (What's the point of a CObra then :p)

For people who have flown the Cobra: They are crazy HARD to stop. I have died more times by ramming then anything else :O

Go to an Anarchy system, use Kill Warrant Scanner, target FSD and be aware of your surroundings. All problems solved.

Umm... Heh heh did you read the original post?

Anyways, I have a chaff launcher and a point defence. Which one should I sacrifice for a K-Warrant? I'm not sure if the point defense is even working automatically

This I find particularly annoying.. Why do we get a disruption pretty much anytime anyone is in our immediate space, and an NPC who has us in their space are able to jump out in such a short amount of time?

Other systems in the game apply to npc the same as they do to real players, so Jo, I don't understand whywhat I mentioned above happens.

I also do agree that the AI shouldn't be cheating (or at least make it less obvious) I had a NPC shooting at me with gimballed autos just before jumping ... which shouldn't be possible for at least two reasons : mass lock and hardpoints deployed. I myst admit that I was off.

Most of your list can be solved by simply getting better at the game (wow). The masslock thing seems to be pretty buggy right now though. Same as empty interdictions half of the time.

I read in the manual that mass-lock (from ships) only applies to supercruise and not to hyperspace jumping. The enormous energy needed to create a hyperspace jump is too big to be affected by other ships (only stations and planets). My experience is that Cmdrs try to supercruise away from trouble but NPC's just jump to another system.

The value of the bounty is relevant to the crime. Not the ship or pilot rank.

A few other of those points are easily fixed. It's called improve your skills!

The list contains mostly 'working as intended' features
.
The only thing that annoys me and really needs a fix is security ships attacking me for killing a ship that is wanted in the system they are patrolling i.e. local(basic) scan shows the target as wanted. Not a problem if they are clean in the current system but a wanted tag is a wanted tag unless they are paying off dirty cops.

1. Destroy his frameshift drive or be close to him and slow down his charging.
2. Check how much the bounty is before killing something, jeez.
3. They're either scanning you, or YOU is going head on with them, not them going head on with you.
4. Use your flying skills to get closer to the target and try not to fire at the other ships, it's not that hard
5. Again, use your skills (if you have any) to prevent you firing at other ships
6. If that happen to you, its because you let them. I've so and say almost done 100% bounty hunting the last 7 days and this have yet to happened to me.
7. Post Over /\
8. I actually kinda agree on this one, but its not a huge problem if you bounty hunt in non-player hubs
9. Buggy bugs is bugs
10. They're just pirates without a cargo scanner, they just have to hope you have cargo.
11. *facepalm* That is because they're either first time pirates or off at you because you attacked one of their allies.
12. Oh come on! You have to target him and scan him to see he is wanted before you shoot him! It's basic knowledge in Elite!

1. Wonder who started to give such tips. Example: I target a Power Plant or FSD and destroy a Cobra MK III long before one of the subsystems are gone. Way to go. Wish "I" could follow this hint. NPCs being allowed to use FSD without restriction (in contrary of the players) is a major bug and should be fixed asap.
2. Not working, because bugged. I once killed (alone) an elite viper worth 43.000 Cr and got only 400, I once killed a ship worth 800Cr and got 20.000Cr. I think the bounty rewarded is based on the damage the player "applies" to the target, making 10% damage mean 10% of the total bounty. On the other hand, it does not work all the time this way. I also had a situation, where I encountered a criminal worth a few thousand Cr, but without shields, alone, somewhere, and got only a few hundred for killing him.
3. Since this happens to a friend of mine and me a lot, I would say its the AI.
4. Good idea, unless a security viper jumps in the area or bursts right through your fire. Very funny, happened to me. The question is: why can't FD see "one to three" hits as accident and everything above as purpose? It worked in a lot of other games just fine, there is no reason not to do it in ED(if I remember correctly, even in the original Elite the player could hit a security vessel a few times before it turned hostile). Saying "watch where you are shooting" is just an easy way out and not solving the problem, or even helping a bit.
5. see 4
6. Usualy the Feds are already in the area and already shooting the criminals, hard to say they would be stealing kills. And even when, the player still gets a small bounty if he hits the criminal just once. (OPs fault on this one)
7. see 6
8. see 6 and what do you expect, other players to get off just because you are there? This is a competive game and there is nowhere an NPC with your name on it saying "property of
WeavingBird1917 only he is allowed to kill". On this one you are alone, if you cant live with that, play solo.
9. very annoying bug and it should have been fixed in the first patch
10. true
11. true
12. buggy, target ship is clean, have a bounty of (ie) 2000Cr, belongs to faction "silver camorra" and you are in SOL, the player is fined when he attacks first, the player is fined when he shoots back after he got attacked (silver camorra is just an example, it can be any ominous faction which is not a part of the system the player is in). should also be fixed asap.
