Still no VR improvements, still unplayable

No one else is reporting the problems you see.
ED does not work in direct mode, if you are doing that it will likely explain your poor frame rate.

@phier try super sampling, it makes the rift experience even better

I never mentioned a poor framerate. The only thing I've referenced that you might be thinking of is the *four second long freeze* when you change UI and go into the galaxy or system explorer or enter/leave hyperspace.

ED definitely does work in direct mode. For me it only works in direct mode - extended is way too messed up and shows two screens per eye. It's impossible for you to be on an old build so we're probably experiencing completely different scenarios.

I also enabled supersampling and it made zero difference to the quality. I also tried DSR but that slowed it down to being unplayable.

You can blame Nvidia for this one. They messed up the drivers for the Oculus rift on extended. As before that driver update, it is the best way to go... Why?

In direct to HDM, it forces it to your screen resolution and refresh rate. Like mine its 1600x900 at 60hz When you got to be at the native of the oculus rift. And at minimum of 75hz to use it properly. Which extended allows.

Don't blame Frontier or the Oculus rift for this current mess up.

Its the graphic driver.

But Frontier -is- working to get direct to HDM to be working properly... Just give them time.

As for text unreadable... It's the oculus and dev fault there. Partly. The oculus is in RBGR ( If I got that right ) Meaning it has double the pixels in green. There is a thread about it, showing the pixel's color arrangement.

If you were able to put everything in orange to be in green, all the text would be sharp and readable.

Interesting. I'm using a 4k screen. Perhaps 4k res plus poor resampling down to the rift would explain everything. I'll try dropping the desktop res and see if it helps real quick - although I've been running the game itself in 1080p from the start.

I still have fresh issues with ED. Like no way to exit supercruise. That's also making it unplayable. The frame drive key is bound but there's no way to check that, since the keybinding doesn't exist in the config options. This game wasn't ready for release.

Edit: changing the desktop res made no difference.

Perhaps an example would help: the menu text is illegible, but the graphics settings text which is slightly larger is readable.

Also, I'm not using the Nvidia beta drivers which have the ED/OR issue - it's not supported by Unreal Engine so I have to stick to stable releases.

ok so first off what are your system specs? The sad truth is VR is hard on any PC right now and even the newest hardware is not fully optimized for it let alone older setups. so that might be a issue for you from the start.
How is extended mode not working for you? i have tested it between direct mode, extended, extended with OR set as primary screen and with OR as my only screen from all the options just the regular extended mode gives me the highest frame rate.
As far as reading the text you need to change the color of your UI. Here is a link with instructions. ok so i cant put links in posts yet so i will send you a pm.
Green seems to be the best for me and it really is a huge improvement.

I used the link you sent and it helped, thanks! The cockpit text became a bit better, but still requires leaning in.

My system specs are considerably better than average. I'm running it in 1080p and the top quality setting with no dip in framerate - just application pauses.

I've mocked up what it looks like for me by manually adding an approximation of the moire interference from the pixel grid overtop of a screenshot of the main menu:
1EdBAtE.png

For reference, the main menu above is clearer than the in-cockpit UI.

Simply making the text larger would 100% solve all these problems.

The main menu is pretty bad, but better than that when I focus on it. Its good enough for me to change controls etc. Luckily the main menu isn't a major part of the game.

It's been pretty solid for me, but yes, the main UI menu is off to the left and hard to read, but beyond that using the previous driver and extended mode runs flawlessly, but I've only done the training missions so far. Didn't have any problems hitting targets 2km away.

I have been using the DK2 since Alpha so I think I have a little experience and keep up to date with the forums.

I think the body of evidence is that Extended Mode offers the best experience currently in ED (I've just done 3hrs in ED in extended mode, so please don't say its broke.. your config is broke!).

1) The latest NVIDIA drivers 347.09 are broken so don't use them make sure you are using 344.75.

2) With the DK2 in extended mode, make sure the demo scene is working (in extended mode) in the OR config tool.

3) Launch ED. Make sure the display is on Secondary, Res 1920,1080, refresh 75hz.

4) Make sure the OR resolution slider is all the way to the right in the ED graphics menu.

5) Yes the text is a little blurry.. wait until CV1 when the res will be raised as will the GPU requirements!)

As has been said, both the green text and supersampling improve hud text readability. Supersampling requires quite a meaty graphics setup.

Brilliant dk2 experiences for me. Yes the resolution is not ideal but this will be fixed for cv1 (whilst we do not know official res we do know its higher than dk2) but either way I would be without my rift

My game got a lot blurrier when I took the advice of others and turned off the other monitors and such, not sure why. I'll wait for new Geforce drivers before finding out more as I installed them already and can't be bothered downgrading just for bounty hunting.

I hate to be a downer but this game is impossible to play with a HMD.

- Impossible to read UI
- Impossible to see what you're flying towards
- Any sort of lag means a frozen view, which is sudden and vomit-inducing
- Mouse doesn't line up with UI in a number of contexts
- Loading warns you to use extended mode, which is nonsense and totally broken. Only Direct mode works and it's claimed this is a lesser experience.

Are there any improvements planned? I bought this game after how much everyone talked about how great it was in the rift, but so far I'm unimpressed. I'd like to do more than look around the hanger and then fumble around in space. Can't trade if you can't read the screens. Can't fight blurry pixels. I've made suggestions that would immediately improve these issues and make it playable, but I've been completely ignored. I see from a number of other posts that customer support for this game doesn't exist. It's not... looking good. Where are the developers?

I solved this problem with this zoom mod. Anyone knows whether the official devs can greenlight this? I will publish the source code/exe if that happens.

WOW!!! Amazing mod. I would love to have this and suspect many other Rift users would too.

Still watching the video, but very impressive work.

Might have to re-watch the video, but in essence are you simply changing FOV dynamically? I've occasionally wondered why Frontier haven't offered an actual zoom component that one could buy and equip to your ship that would allow users to zoom/scope in on distant objects. What you've developed appears slightly different as it allows zooming on the whole screen so that the cockpit itself can become larger in the view, something that would be very useful for any Rift users.

The whole process look a little bit too complex to be user friendly at the moment, but maybe that can be streamlined for actual Oculus Rift? Of course there is no reason why Frontier couldn't just implement some dynamic zoom function within the game for the Rift, but I guess people may cry fowl, thinking it gives an unfair advantage.

You mentioned in the video about zooming in to the menus to read them. The DK2 allows for just that with the positional tracking. The zoom feature for out of cockpit stuff like you have, I would consider it cheating.

As for the OP: You bought experimental hardware, to play a game using experimental implementation.. and you're complaining about the quality? So what that you would pay almost $1000 USD for a high quality headset. Better to sell to 10 people for $400 than to 3 people for $800.

You might note that this thread (and the last one like it) both started out with recommendations to fix ED's Rift issues. I keep hearing that ED is the definitive Oculus Rift experience and my point is that it isn't yet and probably won't be until those suggestions are taken on board. As nothing has happened I've already put in my request for a refund from Frontier since I'm not playing the game and it's worthless as a Rift demonstration.

Anyway, I eliminated any potential mis-configurations and perceptual differences - nobody has claimed that their menu looks any different to mine.

From a consumer perspective, sure, there are no complaints because ED is just out of beta and the Rift is still IN beta. But from a beta testing/developer perspective I don't see why anyone should have to put up or shut up. If you insist on settling for a cruddy experience, by all means stop updating your client and enjoy your broken game. Otherwise stop your criticism of people trying to improve your future experience.

One thing I've been saying over and over for the past three months is that nobody is taking VR seriously and they're going to get blown out of the water by developers like me who took the time to include VR as a worthwhile user experience. It's a bit like Rovio and mobile gaming - it didn't exactly come out of the blue but nobody took it seriously. Now Angry Birds is the definitive mobile gaming rags to riches story. It's just a shame that we couldn't all get VR on its feet together.

The one major complaint remaining is the total lack of interest in the subject by ED's developers or community moderators. It makes sense, developing for VR as a business model isn't financially worthwhile yet and if none of the developers are interested in VR themselves then it's not going to get a lot of effort put into it. But that's also not entirely the problem. I'm reading threads where people don't even have access to the game a week after paying for it. Frontier need to pull their socks up.

I mentioned you in another post, nice work. You really should just release it. At worst you're going to get asked to take it down (and they have no legal grounds to force you to) and at best someone at Frontier might acknowledge your efforts and all of us will have a better experience.

I don't really think it's cheating, either. These ships are designed to be flown from sensors for the most part and the point-and-click-pew-pew part doesn't happen until the very end. Zooming in won't give anyone on desktop any kind of advantage over someone using sensors, but it'll certainly level the playing field for people on low resolution devices.

I can't disagree more...... 100 hrs or more in rift vr prove to me its not true. Asking for a refund due to your idea that its support for an unrelease product is broken esp when the majority believe otherwise seems a little unrealistic imo

The bad news is that all the OR projections have been wildly optimistic. Price, resolution, featureset and delivery date have all been way off the mark. I'd be happy with a 1080p, gridless screen for $400 some time in 2016. Wireless 4k consumer screens for sub $300 will not happen in this generation of HMDs.

That's part of why I'm so keen to see developers take a VR-specific approach to their games. The problem isn't going to solve itself with better hardware.

Some of the key technologies you'll see appear before then:

- crazy new battery technologies for fast charging and huge storage (graphene, where are you?)
- low latency 4k 100fps full-frame video decompression using mobile chipsets
- 802.11ax mobile chipset support
- much cheaper mobile IR cameras with 8MP resolution and 60fps capture support

As you can see, this is a subject I'm passionate about. But I'm also realistic. We have to make the currently available hardware the target experience.

There's no problem with the rift mate, the problem is with the lack of support in ED. I don't mind paying 50 pounds to show people what I mean when I say "VR is great!" but this isn't it. When I can sit down and play using a HMD and not need to take it off to learn the controls I'll be satisfied. Until then it's a sub-par effort.

I know the difficulties in producing a VR simulation that overcomes the usual issues with motion sickness, pixel lattice, frame rate issues, etc. I've done it. I don't see why Frontier can't do the last 5% and finish what they started. In fact, I don't see why they can't attend to their forums occasionally.

You might be getting from my tone that I'm pretty much done trying now. I'll see you guys again when someone fixes something.

But it ISNT broken that is what I do not get. The latest nvidia driver ARE broken however. Also you state things like the consumer version be the same res as dk2 which is simply false as well. You seem to be blaming FD for a mixture of nvidia driver issues and your own PC issues.

4k seems unlikely for cv1 but 1440p would be a nice compromise in price and performance either way palmer lucky has stated cv1 is going to be a higher resolution than dk2

Either way tho the title of this thread is wrong elite is 100% not unplayable in vr it is the only way I play it.

Getting tired of reading people asking for refunds because such or such feature isn't as good as they'd want it to be. That's not how the world works, guys, and you just come off as very immature. Especially when pretty much everyone else is happy with said feature. Especially when the Rift isn't even out yet, and you bought a DEV kit ; even on Oculus' website they specifically ask consumers to NOT buy it and wait for the release version. In all fairness, no one could blame Frontier if the Rift implementation wasn't improved until the official release of the headset.

The only legitimate claim for a refund was for those who paid for the game before its release based on the promise of an offline mode, and found out later that they would not be able to play the game at all because they had no internet access. And Frontier proposed refunds to these people. Now that offline mode has been officially discarded (at least for now), even this is no longer a valid reason to ask for a refund.

You paid for a game, you got a game, and a very good one at that. You downloaded it and played it, I don't see how Frontier should give you your money back. Next time you plan on getting some money back on the basis that you're not happy with a game, consider buying one that comes on a physical disc that you can sell.

Seriously? You're requesting a refund because the VR experience for an unreleased device isn't perfect? Wow tough crowd.
what you are asking is for FD to focus their development efforts on providing better support for a device that won't hit the shelves for another 8-12 months.

You need to be patient, if they have 20 develops they are not going to drop development of the game just because a few people are moaning about text clarity in a beta device. Until now they have been focused in getting the game out the door, the next stage is to start adding new features.

I don't care about people trying to tweak the settings and make it better, I do it all the time. What I object to is people who bought a development device and then spend all their time moaning about how hard done by they are because FD havent dropped everything to redesign the game for them.

Why exactly would you expect unpaid volunteer fans who have stepped up to perform community Moderation activities to have any influence at all on the game development?

If you want to complain, at least get your facts and assumptions correct first.
