Convince me to buy ED ... a challenge!

My hand has been hovering over the 'add to cart' for this game, but its not cheap, and I would like some reassurance that I will get my moneys worth!

I was in love with the original Elite, played on a 48k spectrum, even with its lenslok lovliness! Nostalgia is pulling my towards Lave, but... I need that final push.

I am concerned that beyond the forums there seems only little player interaction in game, something I have come to value when gaming. I don't want to have a full on clan/guild experience like WoW, I do want a reason to interact with other players, beyond....shooting at them. I would like to play a part in an 'in game' community, but I certainly don't want a second job! I would like to able to play with friends that I currently have (if I can convince them to play), or new friends I meet in game. Is there a method of doing this? are there any in game communities? is there a half decent social interface in game? Are there objectives that suit a multi-player environment? Whats player maturity like? I don't mind PvP, I don't like pointless trolling.

I am looking for something to play, for maybe 10~15 Hrs a week, minimum chunk of one hour, maximum chunk of... lets say... 8 ;)

Sell it too me!

Buy Elite and you can get to add new plugins like VoiceAttack & Facetracknoir for a new experience. Whilst it still is being developed you get to learn how to play it and find your niche ready for a much better multi-player galaxy.

I wanted to add my two cents. I heard about this game from a coworker a few days back. I bought this game without reading anything about it beforehand. So as an actual new person to the genre and franchise I can honestly say it was worth the price, hands down. I am flat out addicted to this game.

this very much me never played a Elite game before this one but played some X3 TC and AP and eveonline imo loving this one way more than any of them

You will be able to fully customize your ship, how it looks, how it works, you will be able to find multiple blueprints across galaxy, hire engineers and tweak subsystems.
There will be ship boarding and wars on planet surface. You will be true Hans Solo, doing your businesses in cantinas.
There will be alien races across galaxy, so you will be able to discover them, trade with them or start a war with them. There will be also ancient ones Cthulu like asteroid eaters.
You will be able to build your own small station, or within your faction with friends you will be able to design huge one.
There will be contests for best ship and stations.
You will be able to be pirate, corsair or mercenary, or even you will be able to have your own minning company.
There will be politics, so you may be able to start a war by mistake (you are already able to do that I think)

There is many "you will be" and you should read it "maybe", "there is possibility", "some time in future", "in your imagination"...

BUT: this game is a framework which would allow many similar things, and as much as there is lack of some kind of content and this is frustating, it also have some magic, that makes you play it...

Every day you can discover something new, and I hope if developers will add silently some features - wow efect will be huge and magic.

Example: I just was fighting on extraction sites on a night side of planet, there were only engines of ships visible, pretty nice experience!

I recommend it to you, just try, first 40 hours for sure give you a lot of fun. What later? This is in a hands of devs.

It's priced lower than most new titles... besides, chances are if you need convincing, then it may not be your cup of tea. (British pun not intended :D )

You should buy a Personality first, pretty boy. They are not expensive.

Take a look at some reviews/gameplays by yourself ;) Watching people playing helped me to decide.

Many thanks to *most* of the responders. I does indeed look like Wings would help fulfill my hopes for the game play experience I am looking for. Someone mentioned voice attack, that was something else I stumbled up when I researching the game, looked pretty nifty to me (although my kids would probably think I was nutty as hell). It sounds like there should a good amount of play time just learn the basics, and find out which aspects of the game I would most enjoy, before the arrival of Wings. I did love the original game, but you gotta remember I was 12 years old, and since then the 'internet' happened, and online gaming pretty much became my number one hobby.

Thanks again, I'll sleep on it, and.... then... more than likely buy it in the morning, if only to find out what I can moan about in future posts (j/k) !!

Somehow i don't think he's joking somehow xD

Dude, really... I am much more likely to moan about the attitude of the forum posters than I am the game ;) and after this little excursion in the forum, I doubt I'll come back to this particular forum for anything.

Personally I love this game beyond imagination. Nevertheless I won't recommend it to you right now, I even didn't recommend it to my brother! As others already stated I would wait and watch the next 6 month. From my impression you are intelligent enough to gather all needed infos from more neutral places. Looking in a game forum with all its fan boys and haters looks a bit suspicious to be honest, as if you expect to be motivated. This attitude wouldn't help you much about the current emptiness (compared to standard AAA titles). Some love exactly that, others hate it. There isn't much room in between.

Anyway, one of my favorite reviews is this one in case no one hasn't yet provided this link to you (no fan boy video, pretty balanced IMO):

Elite Dangerous - Is it the Game for Me?

Cheers skipper, it was one of the first videos I watched before arriving here.

This elite is like the old elite right now. There are groups you can join with and have fun with. I guessing Clans but easy to avoid. With 400,000,000,000 stars. You should be alright.

Ok, Purchased and downloading now, time to find out what all the fuss is about.

Thanks again, see you in game (or as it happens, I very likely wont - heh).

Aha! I do a lot of thinking, in fact, I work in the space industry as an engineer mainly 'thinking', and yes I can form my own opinion, but you know what....part of that process is gathering information from all sources, and after the articles and reviews I read, and after some you tube vids, I came here for that little bit extra. A chance for those who play to tell me about the game (I thought it was a good move - I'm not always right).

Wait, wait, you work in the Space Industry as an engineer... yet you state in your OP that "My hand has been hovering over the 'add to cart' for this game, but its not cheap,"

Call me crazy, but for someone on an engineers salary $60 should be nothing... you can consume $60 in drinks in one sitting at the pub with a pal easy. But hey, "whatever you say", I'm the President of Uganda.

It is international forum, not everywhere and on every position earn like this, also there are different family situations etc.

For the money you get a game that is only about 40-60% fully realized. Some people will say this is cause for a refund. I claim it to be the promise of a hell of a ride in to the future.

I'm sorry any, any engineer can afford $60. I worked as an audio engineer for a couple of years in school at crap dance clubs... light years from a space industry. Unless he's is working for the Ethiopian space federation I call . I just don't see why people need to to try to validate their intentions.
