3 monitors or Oculus Rift?

Have you tried contacts or considered laser eye surgery? I had lasik and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I went from 20/400 vision to 20/15
I believe the crew at oculus said that they looking into having it so you can get prescription lenses for it when it's actually released.

I might get some contacts specifically for this level of viewing. I am thinking of actually taking in the commercial version to the eye doctor next year

I haven't tried a rift yet, but certainly would like to. I do have some questions/concerns I need answered first regarding eye strain and focus for us old timers that use reading glasses. If those are ok I will give it a try eventually, but for now my 3 24" 1920X1200 monitors work really well. I'm running an "old" Core i7-950 with an Nvidia GTX 770 on a Fiber optic 60/60 line. It all runs really smooth with no need to dump more cash into hardware. I also have concerns that I would need to build better hardware to support the rift. it is a bit hard to justify building a new system just to make the move. the price reward equation doesn't feel right just yet.

I use reading glasses and I am perfectly fine with the default lenses. Take a bit of time to go through the IPD setup. It runs like a dream now with Elite. Imagine leaning towards your side window and watching the planet move out of view. It is breathtaking.
Resolution is low, No doubt about it but the gameplay it offers far exceeds the loss in graphical fidelity.

I love love love my rift. That being said, I play on a monitor most of the time. After a few hours you're tired of having it stuck to your face. Eye strain is a slight issue. Also with kids, the rift is too immersive to multi task and you have to constantly take it off. That and super cruising is horribly boring when you're stuck in the rift because you can't play on your phone or look at another screen.

If you have one, go for it. I happily use three monitors and head tracking for games that reward the effort, like the IL-2 series, R3E, AC, etc., but there's no way in hell I'd have bought them for this.

My setup is my iRacing setup, it just so happens ED was my 1st game in 84 and I have the setup for triples and DK2.

It is not perfect, but then nothing is yet and you either embrace it or constantly wait for the "next version" to come around. Each to their own.

To the OP. Try and get a go on a DK2 and ED before you make your mind up.

I use 6 screens (2x Matrox TH2G's) and it works really well for flight sims and driving games because the center bezels can be positioned between the windscreen / canopy and dashboard / console.

You can still have the same extreme aspects and FoV's, but extended to fill the other screens.

Can't wait to get a Rift though.. must be night and day in comparison.

It would seem that, becuase of the way the Oculus Rift works you can easily see that the stars in the bacground of supercruise and the like are just skyboxes.

It ruins your imersion.

Did not read the whole thread because it is pointless. DK2 all the way unless you have some problem with your eyes that won't let you take full advantage of it.

A screen is a screen, the rift is a freaking spaceship. Yes you will have problems with the screendoor effect, with the resolution, you will curse the galactic map. And then you will never turn on the monitor again because you don't want to play a game - you want to fly your spaceship

Honestly, I stop noticing the screen door after a few minutes.

It depends on what I am doing for me. If I am doing combat it is like you say, I am focused on killing the ship so my brain doesn't even notice the screendor anymore. If I am trading however I can't help but notice it. Still prefer it to the screen of course, I don't think I would be playing ED as much without the rift and that is because my brain at this point actually believes I have a spaceship on my garage :)

I only notice it when looking at the background stars, they're a little blobby because of it. But I did some comparisons today and for the most part, I don't see much impact to the resolution aside from the stars.

Also you might want to consider trying one out first. Some people find the rift to be very uncomfortable, especially if your IPD is larger or smaller than average which I think is in the neighborhood of 65mm.

This is roughly what it looks like for me. This is closer than normal because I set it down in front of me without resetting the position but sharpness is pretty much the same as it is while wearing it. As you can see, the text is a little blurry but perfectly readable. Some of this is also due to my camera not being well centered on the lens.

This definitely. I just got my DK2 and it really is like being in your spaceship. OK text is a bit of a problem, though nowhere near as bad as some people are saying. And you do get a sort of looking through a mesh effect due to the limitations of the display. But it really doesn't matter a bit. You're IN a freaking spaceship. The first time I looked to my right in the Rift and saw the copilot's seat in the Cobra I was stunned. Note here I mean literally "saw the seat". Not a picture of a seat in the monitor. The seat - it's like you could reach out and touch it.

You most certainly will need a HOTAS and Voice Attack installed to make it work though.

As for the stars being like a skybox - they should be. Stars are so far away they stay fixed in the sky even with the distances travelled in supercruise. Nothing to do with the Rift.

I know what you mean there although it had the opposite effect for me: it made me dislike the Cobra as the empty seat makes me feel alone in an empty ship. That is how powerful the rift is, the Cobra used to be my favorite ship but the rift completely changes your perception of the space around you. You start caring about your cockpit in a way you never do with a screen because you feel like you're actually there.

But even a better example than this was the first time I flew a type 6: I had vertigo trying to land that sucker looking through the glass in the floor. Vertigo. I mean... how it can be compared with a screen is beyond me.

FLight simmer for over 20+ years. I've got 27" 5760x1080 setup, TM WH, Combat Pedals, TIR5.

Everything but the TM WH and pedals are now going to be packed away since I've been playing with the Rift.

DK2 all the way. It cannot compare to a 5760x1080 setup. Not even close. It truly is a unique experience.

I tried a Rift DK2 over the weekend - Great fun to play on for a bit of combat. But if you're mostly trying to do some trade grinding or anything that involves reading a menu, just dont bother.

Currently not worth the cash (IMO). The resolution (basically 960x1080) is just not great when your eyes are that close. A decent screen/3 screens would be a much better purchaes atm IMO. I am very keen to try the release version though.

The cost of three monitors and the required GPU is far more than the Rift.

That said, you still need to wait for CV1. The Rift resolution isn't ready for cockpits.

One day, the OR won't be like looking through a diving mask, it'll have a much higher FOV and much better resolution. On that day, the world as we know it will change forever. I can't wait! :D
