New Trading Tool - Cmdr's Log v1.1!

I get it as well when pressing F1 in the data entry. I don't know what language this is written in, I assume some variant of C, but I program in Visual Basic 10 and from what I hear the IDE is fairly similar. I created a test project just to see if I could make the f1 - f3 keys change a combobox's selected index. I had a keydown event setup but it wouldn't fire it until I found something. In the forms properties there is a property KeyPreview. This is normally set to false. I changed it to True and it worked like a charm. You might need to go into your data input form. I'm sure it's correct in the main form as the F keys work.

I'm a programmer (amateur, but still). I know these little things can make you pull your hair out:D

Just popping into this thread to say that I really love this tool.

I could add a bunch more, but I think that covers it. So I'm going to pretend that this isn't just a brief +1 post, but instead an endorsement that's been finely honed. Like a haiku.

This is great! Someday it would be nice if it used the EDDN and other crowd sourced system lists, but I like that the notes and other things one collects are private.

All good and the focus in the price field is helping with speed.

According to the OP it will NEVER use crowd sourced lists as that's not the point. It was coded for himself instead of having to use paper and pen and then he just thought others might find it useful. It's not meant to be a crowd sourced system as some people view crowd source systems a bit of cheat. No one has a problem with people using crowd source solutions but this is not what this tool is for. It's for people that don't want to know about systems they've not been too but want to keep easy to create notes.

Its interesting... I don't get the F1 help pop up here, on either commodity list (main screen or the data entry one). I USED to get it; but I since fixed that (or so I thought). Possibly a Windows 8 thing? I need to test it on my Win8 machine. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

In the Good Trade lists can we get a check box for illegal stuff?

Lol... ya know; working on a tool like this and getting feedback from people really exposes who the pirates are... ;)

That whole trade thing I plan to redo soon. For one, it's too small to even ready the station names half the time, and two, its barely useful when dealing with price. I'll probably make a much more fancy trades window that pops up so I have room to add controls and features without worrying about screen space too much.

Yes, I'm on Win 8 (8.1).

The popup happens on the dialog for individual data entry, not the commodity list.

Sweet, thanks for this!

Noticed a small spelling error. When clicking "Journal" the button top left (in the opened window) that should say "Jour-nal" says "Joun-ral" (separated with hifen to highlight the error). Having worked with proof reading i know how easy it is to miss things. :D

EDIT: Oh, also, i didnt find a way to clear/delete added journal entries. Maybe not in yet? Couldnt find where the text was stored either. Gonna check docu&settings if a folder/file is created there while i await your answer.

EDIT2: Nvm, the journal text file was created when exiting the program. :)

Would this bother anyone...

Basically; get rid of all that stuff under commodities and let it be accessed from a menu up top. I could also add all that to the Right-Click context menu as well.

Likewise (not pictured), how about getting rid of all the station buttons right under the station list and have those be from the menu (or right-click context)?
Its nice to be able to access everything directly. Just my opinion, do what you have to do. :)

TIL- I can do just about everything in the Data Entry Mode on the Number Pad. AWESOME! Might have been common knowledge, but it's just one more feature that makes this tool even better. Thanks ArchV1.

i'm liking it sir :D

Would u consider as u're at it, if maybe the Stations where grouped into Federation, Empire, Alliance Zones ? We could then Hide a whole Faction in one go ? Just a thought :p see what others think ;)

Would bother me. It's easier click the boxes where they are than have to go into a sub menu.

I'd say keep the buttons but you can make them context sensitive, so people could use the keyboard. I haven't done programming in years but this project makes me want to play with Visual Basic again )

I'd probably leave the direct controls on Data Entry Mode; but on the main screen things are getting way too crowded.

Although, I get the feeling that's part of the charm of the app, it DOES look complicated and powerful on the surface because everything is right there. Soon as it is simplified down and everything is hidden away; it will look cleaner, but not as... I dunno... "Control Panel-y" :)

I think I would like a quick button to add a station. And also that a newly added station is automatically selected.

There could be room for an "add button" above the table, left of the checkbox for searcing station data. If the rest are moved away, I would like a "notes" button on the "add station" dialog.

For station list management, a window like the data entry window could work. What is the purpose of removing them? To save the line? Or to just get rid of a bunch of buttons? If it is the latter I would leave the "add" button and add a "manage stations" button. To give that station management window.

I have asked for improved hiding, being able to reorder the list would also be kind of nice :)

For the commodities, how about "forcing" the use of data entry window? Leave the data entry button, and have the other buttons in that window alone. Then maybe add a "hide" button that expands a small window with the checkboxes? Or the right click. Today I never use the data entry window, but it would not be a major pain to use it (I have borderless elite and a second monitor for this tool).

I am not a huge fan of digging into the menu for a routine operation. Right click options could work, though, in which case menu should also have them so that new users can discover them.

Yeah I'm putting the whole menu thing on hold for a bit until I get more of a feel how the community wants to see changes. I don't think digging into menus would be much fun either.

I've CONSIDERED making Data Entry Mode the only way to see and edit the commodities; but while that seems ok on the surface, it means the app would basically end up being a bunch of windows floating around. I don't know if that'd be a good or bad thing.

I've looked into tabs; tabs are a pain the ass. It would solve a lot of problems, but tabs really are a rework of most of the app just to get them in there.

The ultimate goal is to clean up some screen space; and possibly reduce the window size down a bit if possible. Right now the app is just barely too wide to fit on a screen that's 1024 wide. The other goal is to have more features without adding a ton of new buttons (the Menu helps with that a bit). Alternatively, if different sections had their own windows entirely; that would give room for extra features + buttons.

It's growing to the breaking point; and I think the ultimate end result will be more pop up windows (like Data Entry Mode). Just a matter of how to break it up and what can be in a pop up window vs what must stay on the main window.
