Re support, cut them some slack, they just crunched for about a year, released a week before Christmas and had a little well earned R&R seasonal holiday along with the rest of the post Roman world, without which they would be useless to us, as they would grind to a halt from fatigue and stress. They were incredibly productive last year and I have no doubt they will continue in the same way once they have had a cup of coffee and tidied up the tinsel on Monday.
Re income levels necessary to support development, that all depends on player numbers. Subscription is not an option, but what FD have said all along is that they will be producing episodic paid for updates, so I would guess the frequency of those updates and the extent of content can be adjusted to match the income they generate. I do hope they will be producing some more carefully crafted custom skins for the rest of the ships before long, I am collecting! Equally I also hope they get into developing and supporting ED Ep1 so they have our confidence before offering us Ep2.
At this point it is a bit chicken and egg and good reviews and videos of fun gameplay can attract a larger audience at the outset so as a player it makes sense to look on the positive side when relaying your impressions to others if you actually want the game to succeed. On the other hand this honeymoon period cant last forever and the confidence of the player base is a critical factor in word of mouth recommendation.
I get the sense that much of the carping is coming from players who are not sure if their faith will be rewarded and many may be remembering the dismay of interacting with organisations like EA etc and are waiting to see if recommending ED to their friends will make them popular or attract insults before deciding whether to stake their reputation on recommending it. They are letting FD know that they are watching and waiting though and that FD are not off the hook and their audience expect to see results, which is fair enough IMHO. In fact it is a pretty positive sign as they are still offering FD an opportunity to impress. So I think this period at the beginning is important and what is critical is how the support pans out over the next six months, since lets be honest we are playing a release which was, to paraphrase Shakespeare, untimely ripped from its gamma womb.
Diehard fans like me will have got used to the glitches and we play on, but that doesnt mean it will work out in the long term with a critical and demanding global audience, unless it is fixed up nicely. So yes there is a risk here and the ball is in FDs court but I think they know it. I think they understand that the server reliability, various aspects of the interface and also the content balance all need to be carefully refined along with the ongoing story telling and the mission system. I dont think they have come this far and worked so long and hard to make this happen to give up now, I think they will deliver Ep1 to our satisfaction and then they will bring Ep2.
Re episodes, investing in content can grow the audience. If you look at Star Citizen that is the proof the audience is there and it has the cash. While market confidence was important for FDs survival and is why we enjoyed a playable never-again-wipe-able Christmas release, player confidence is the key to Elite's future.
