Does anyone know why the A shield cell class has fewer than the B but is more expensive? To add to the confusion why would an A class 2 be more expensive than an A class 1 and why?

How much better is the A 2 over the B 2 what am I missing a decoder ring here or something??

1 shield cell will fully recharge your shields, the only options are how many you have. Don't need 2 at once, 1 will recharge fully.

A give more charge back to the shield than a B, and the B is heavier but has more uses.
2 is mkore expensive than 1 because its better, the higher the number (like all equipment) is better.

Even more confusing just spent the money and got to identical A class 2s for my cobra snd even tho they cost the same and look identical in every way, when looking at my buildout one has the gimballed symbol to the right of the words shield bank cells and one has the fixed weapons symbol.... I'm guessing this is glitch right?

Would still love explanation as to class and ratings thanks!!!

Many people have done tests for this, but it basically boils down to the following factors:
1) Make sure the size you are using is the CLOSEST to the 'Optimal' figure. (Size 1, 2, 3, etc). This pertains to your ship's weight in Tons.
2) Upgrading from E to A is almost always better, unless you get into situations where your shields drop often. 'A' rank has more shielding than an 'E' rank, but because of this they take longer to get back online if they go down. An example where having a lower ranked shield would be more beneficial than a higher ranked shield might be reserved for players who use Silent Running more often in a combat situation. People who use them for combat with Shield Cells and so forth will probably want to go with 'A'.
3) Go with D-rank if weight is your only concern (FSD distances, maneuverability, etc).

Its all about the mass.

Shields work in two stages -
1.) Full power when at or under optimal mass
2.) Reduced power when above optimal mass

Its actually very simple to understand once you "get it". If you want the "best" shield for your ship, its ALWAYS the one with more optimal mass than your MAXIMUM mass.

So if you have a ship thats for example 80 mass empty /120 mass loaded, the shield you want for it should have its OPTIMAL mass at 120 or higher.

fixed weapon symbol means you need to activate it manually. I would guess the gimballed symbol is telling you it will be used at the same time as the first one.

Lots of research being done in this thread:

Short version - if you want the best shields for your ship, fit the largest Class (number) you can and the best Rating (letter).

There are some ships where it can be much more mass efficient to fit a lower Class shield than the ship allows, but this varies from ship to ship - and even then, the higher class shield will still be stronger, it's just that the extra mass may not be worth it.

Where do I check to see my ships mass? All I see is 50, nothing about optimal and maximum

Lol well I got to try out my new shiny A 2 shield sell banks 55k against an Imperial clipper and received empirical evidence that it is a piece of crap. I only got two recharges and was out then I had to flee the area lest I die and lose my cargo filled with reactive armor. This must truly be a glitch I will go buy some of the B 2 s at 22k and see if I fare better.

Secondly wouldn't the number of recharges be a simple stat you'd post without all this coded class A rank 2 etc?

In the outfitting screen, in the lower right, it'll show your ship's empty and full mass.

When looking at a shield generator in the outfitting screen, it'll show the optimal and max mass that shield generator can protect in the 'info panel' for the module.

You always want to try to make sure the optimal mass limit of your shield generator is higher than the mass of your ship.

Are you saying you have an imperial clipper?
I'd say a good rule of thumb is the same size and type of shield cell should fill up a shield of the same.

eg a C5 shield cell will fill up a C5 shield.
Anything with a smaller number, or lesser letter will fill less.

No sorry I'm in a cobra.... What class ship is that and where do I find that...

Oh you're saying the class shield should match the class shield cell bank that makes sense I suppose, so I'll check that.

4 Pips in Shield Ramming and I'm the one that die?

This could be an issue:
http://a.pomf.se/heealz.mp4

I was in a Cobra with 100% Class A R4 Shield, 100% Military Armor and rammed by mistake a 50% shield Cobra NPC and i'm the one who lost. Doesn't make sense...

Checked the slow mo(60fps record) seems that the server timed out the NPC:

First hit I lose 50% off my shield while the NPC lost nothing
Second hit, lost all my shield and a few armor, NPC lost nothing
Third final hit, i'm at 0%, NPC lose it's shield and armor is 0%

That cobra was in a fight with another player or NPC so maybe the NETCODE didn't put my on the priority or something like that.

I don't care for the loss, but I shouldn't have died like that...

Makes no difference what shield you have, shield cells recharges to max. I've got T7 with C4 shields and C2 shield cell and it charges to max. I think that all different sizes do is recharge quicker.

They don't all recharge to max, you're getting max because the T7 with a class 4 generator has pretty weak shields. On a Python or an Anaconda a C2 shield cell doesn't even fill one ring. So it depends on what ship and shield generator you have.
