This is What a Type 6 Explorer Looks Like

There have been a lot of discussions about how to outfit ships for exploration. Allow me to present the final iteration of my Type 6 Explorer.

This ship won't see any more upgrades; I'll be trading it in for an Asp, once I have the funds to kit it out with equivalent performance as the Obvious Enigma Mk. 2, shown above.

What I'd like to point out is that, despite almost all A-rated modules, this ship still has a jump range of almost 28 LYs. This is enough range to explore probably 95% of all stars in the Galaxy; which would take you longer to do than you can effectively live, given today's medical technology. I would happily reduce my range a light year, in order to upgrade the sensors and shield generator, but I'm carrying D-rated ones because of power restrictions.

So why upgrade to an Asp? Survivability, skipping over previously explored territory faster during trips back to civilization, and of course that last 5% of the Galaxy. :)

P.S., I lied a little...I'll be upgrading the Auto Field-Maintenance Unit. The station I'm at just didn't have any.

I've considered doing the same to my T6, I have the cash for it, but I really want the Asp because the view just seems so much better. The T6 has pretty good visibility, but the Asp just looks cleaner without those huge bars right in front of your face. I've got the money to buy it with a trade in, but it doesn't leave me with much for upgrades or insurance.

Buying a high-end vehicle without the high-end upgrades always feels like a downgrade, to me. :)

Wait. I just upgraded my T6 to Asp. I had around 13-14m going into the shipyard, 20m in cash after I stripped the T6 for trade and I had less than 5m left after upgrades and weapons. And not even all the upgrades and I didn't fill the medium weapon mounts, just the 4 small.

A well fitted T6 is excellent at everything but fighting.

Why the the highly rated life support/thrusters/power distributer/power plant? It's not like life support is going to save you, and I'm sure you could get that thing to be a lot lighter, increasing its jump range.

If I downgrade to all D, pushing my jump range up another, what, 1.5 LYs? Where could I go that I can't go now?

Have you ever run out of oxygen, 1 jump short of making it back from your deep space run? I have. It's not worth the risk, just to get another decimal point on an arbitrary number. And even if there is someplace that I want to go, but can't reach right now...it can wait until I have an A-rated FSD in an Asp.

Thrusters...I do actually like diving into USSs as I come back from trips to do repair and sell data. I fill up on salvage and to smuggle back in. Thrusters save me time, as well as help me escape from bandits that are in some of those locations. Besides, a Type 6 with a A-rated thrusters drives like a muscle-car. Fun. :)

All of that takes power, and I can still go almost anywhere, and on a budget financed almost solely through exploration.
