Roadmap after release

Hardly likely a company with give you an NDA roadmap of it's flagship product.

Some hints and desires maybe, but not the roadmap.

Apart from the company point of view, imagine the uproar on the forums if they were 1 second late with anything or it was to the exact letter of everyones understanding of they personally thought it meant.

Not going to happen, bullet points of desires maybe, but that is all

Why not, loads of devs do - check out Sony and H1Z1 and DayZ by BIS.

Frontier, if you release a roadmap expect all hell to break loose anytime any of those things take longer than expected. don't do it

Good - let all the dumbass crawl out the woodwork and whine thinking they're owed something. Just because of a few self entitled morons doesn't mean the rest of us "normal" people can't appreciate knowing what's coming and give input into those ideas.

The intention is that we'll be a bit more granular with what we intend looking at over the coming year. Some of that will be big announcements that will be handled in a suitable fashion, but also for the periodic updates to the game as the idea is to theme. Once the plan is a bit more solid and has been approved we'll share the bones of it.

Isn't that the Design Discussion forum?

Does this mean that stuff from the DDF will be implemented? Will we be getting persistent NPCs? A mineral scanner? A game that doesn`t feel like it was rushed out for Christmas?

Maybe not the full roadmap but I'd like to see a return to the old format for the newsletters. We used to get info on the market shares of the ship companies and commodities as well as updates on development work even if it wasn't much of a change for when we last saw it.

Obviously development slowed over Christmas so the recent newsletters were a bit waffly :D and I imagine there's some kind of feature freeze on as the team work on fixes for bugs found on all the different hardware setups that the game had never faced before and the servers are worked on.

It would be nice to be as up to date as we were back in the alpha days!

In other news I'm looking forward to a new year of content updates and other patches from Frontier!

Thanks for the comms Michael :)

I understand how delicate a balance all this takes, but really this kind of direct communication with the base fans on the forum about these issues is exactly what the game (and it's players/backers) need right about now. Keep up the sterling work, you (Frontier) have an amazing product with a lot of potential, so keep the fires stoked with all that.

Most launches are a bit bumpy, and i'm sure in hindsight we will have forgotten all the drama a year or so from now (maybe sooner....no pressure!).

Maybe someone should make a roadmap sticky (and closed) post to put at the top of the forum with Michael's "Coming Soon" post?

Elite has beautiful bones in place. The feeling of the ships is great, and the networking is starting to be in an acceptable place. The galaxy looks good, and supercruise gives us great access to the systems.

***

But the game itself is at a bare bones stage. NPCs are missing, the changes to the simulation are very hard to detect. We don't get much feedback for our actions, and it doesn't make a big difference in practice where we are flying. Sol system should be the playground for the rich and powerful, but it's rife with criminally insane NPCs, just like every place else.

It was a phenomenal effort to get the game out on the deadline you set. I appreciate and applaud the accomplishment. Problem is though, that the reputation of the game is fast being made now, and at the moment it's all promise and little delivery. On the actual, gripping gameplay front. The features that make us care about the simulated galaxy, the NPCs, the repercusion for our actions. All of that is still missing.

So please tell us what happens next. What features are coming, what is being worked on right now, and in what order. Keep the information and updates coming, keep people engaged and involved.

Elite has incredible potential. Do not waste this opportunity

+1 on everyword.

Also, Id point out for some, that many MMO's and other games have roadmaps without being pinned down exactly to them. They are just upfront about it being "what they hope to do" or "we plan to do these things roughly in this order, but its not a guaranty"

Fans can be patient and understanding - anger and frustration comes 9/10 from not knowing.

Especially as "not knowing" means its easy for the gaps to be filled with wild speculation that leads to disappointment. (See; How many people thought the launch of the game would have huge amounts more content - skim over the gamma forum and it was filled with it).

Mr Brookes to the rescue!

For the record, I never doubt that the Dev team will keep creating something spectacular. There are balancing mis-steps along the way, and placeholder mechanics, but I'm confident that what is being created here will change MMOs and space games for good.

The purpose of this thread was to call attention to the fact that communication about what is coming, and building anticipation is important as well. Several smart friends of mine played the game for a week (enthusiastically), and then lost interest because of the placeholder MMO mechanics. It's easy to get the impression that Elite is "done", and will turn into a F2P, P2W MMO within six months. Communication matters :)

PS. My friends will be back, I'm sure, but the game needs more meat on it's bones before I'll talk them into having another go.

+1 The game we will be playing a year from now will be very different in many ways from the game we are playing now. In 2 years? In 3 years? Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.
