Elite Dangerous no longer an MMO?

This just shows you fundamentally don't understand how the instancing works in Elite: Dangerous. They're dynamic instances which put players within visual range of each other together temporarily so they can interact. The only time this is limiting player interaction is if there are more than 32 players within ~10km of each other, which would be damn busy anyway.

The whole player population is playing at the same time in the same game world, hence it's an MMO.

This is wrong, and it's easy to see that it is. I've never seen 32 maxed out even in the most populated systems. It's clear that when you get matched with one person, there's others you cannot get matched with because they are in a separate instance. And this is why you tend not to see other players when friends are on, as you always get matched into your friends instance even if it's otherwise empty. What seems most likely is that really you are matched with an instance, not a player per se.

I believe the confusion arises from the fact that ED is theoretically an MMO but in practice it is rarely perceivable as such. That is, due to the extreme scale of the game world it is very rare that a larger number of players arrive in the same spot at the same time. Intuitively, this would be like playing a Battlefield or Counter Strike match of 32 players on a map of 1000 square miles and everyone spawns in a random spot with thousand of AI NPCs around him. Due to this design (and the lack of social tools) player interaction is then the exception of the rule, which is, however, one of the main goals of MMOs.

This is how the design was documented in the DDA, the issues you mention are bugs related to the match making which should hopefully be fixed at some point.

I think Elite Dangerous is a MMO, but.........at this stage it looks weak. Too little interaction between the players in the field of trade, combat and social.

This thread isn't about if its an MMO or not, try R E A D I N G before posting so you can contribute to the discussion instead of degrading to semantics and arguing and looking daft.
The Thread is about; Did FD pull the MMO plug from marketing? If so why?
Its not because we want to hear you try to defend the game as an MMO if it is true, and if not that's fine too, better in fact.
So many panties in so many twists. Sorry ladies, no idea it would be this ridiculous, I may have not posted it, I was seeking some info and venting, because if it is true then its not the expectation that was set, and that's all its about.
EDIT; great, I post right after a Mod, totally embarrassed and not directed that way at all. :p

Hey now.. thief is a bit strong.. I prefer "one who facilitates the redistribution of the wealth/goods of others [to myself]".. pirate works as well (but has different romanticized context association).

So word smuggler then?...

And I have been playing WoT since 2011. My opinion hasn't changed. And in the current state of affairs, I will sooner call World of Tanks an MMO than call ED one.

How is WoT a persistent world when you can't even decide which map to go to next? It's a glorified shooter lobby.

Whilst I would concede that our player-interactions in combat/trading/exploration may infinitesimally be shared in the background, how are instances (or islands) any different from a lobby, with the exception you don't get to choose who you play with?

Not being facetious, I promise :)

  1. A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet.

By definition, the game technically is an MMO that just happens to feature instancing. A little bit like the way Guild Wars 1 was an MMO. If they removed anything that was referencing Elite: Dangerous being an MMO, they probably did it because too many people just think of games like World of Warcraft when they hear MMO, which is not in fact the only formula for an "MMO".

If it must be a single word, that one works as well as the other :D

How about the word 'plagiariser' sounds nice and seems strangely appropriate

If directed at me, how so? I don't remember claiming anything as being created by me which wasn't. Or do I need to provide cited sources for anything I post which was influenced by, or is a restatement of, something created by someone else? Wasn't aware that the forum was considered a scholarly publication and held to the same journalistic/scholary integrity requirements :p
