ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I have a 213 Mac pro:
3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5, 32 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC, 1GB SSD, Dual AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
In Windows 8.1, I have performances settings on.
When I run E:D in normal mode, it does its tests and suggests the highest defaults for gfx options, and runs smoothly at 2560x1440x60
Im on the latest DK2 build, firmware etc.
I am getting a lot of judder in the DK2 unless I am off in deep space somewhere, in which case its buttery smooth on the medium setting.
If I am in a station, running on low, I still get this.

I would have expected more consistent performance at this point.

Any suggestions?

Personaly i have done away with downsampling and sticking to 1920x1080 and just using the HUD colour tweak changing the HUD to cyan or green, improvement on the txt is 100% better.
Now i can run on the highest settings, all maxed out and hit the 75FPS anywhere on the game, in stations it will drop to 70 for a couple of seconds but majority of the time its just flicking from 74 -75 constant.
downsampling really does kill the performance of the game unless you have a DEMON of a rig.

I have the piledriver x8 oc to 4.5ghz and recently bought the zotac 780ti AMP edition and its the first time i have managed to play elite maxed out while keeping 75 fps but as soon as i try and use 2560x1440 there is a pretty nasty performace drop.

I highly suggest that if you dont own a system with sufficient horsepower, use the hud tweak found here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=73419
and do away with downsapmling keeping your rez at 1920x1080, and in game graphic settings adjust to what your pc can handle, you have to see the results of the hud change yourself, it amazed me after all this time a simple tweak can make all the difference.

Hey guys,

I pre-ordered the game 28th of November and played the combat training demo since then.
I Bought saitek and DK2 with it. Both worked GREAT with it...! I haven't had any juddering or anything on ultra settings.
I was waiting calmly for the release playing the demo 1-2hrs a day until I was forced by the game launcher to upgrade my combat demo from Beta to Gamma, it was a few days ago, when they upgraded the launcher. It happaned 3 days after I got my DK2 delivered, I bought it specifically for ED so it was really disappointing to see the game start juddering.
When I play incursion part of the demo, it starts with a little of judder, but after a few seconds it is ok (with a judder every few seconds), it works good especially when I play with low settings, but who wants to play on low when you know you can play on ultra? It is much much MUCH worse when I try to play the part with asteroid belt it gets unbearably juddery even when I play on low. It is very worrying as I imagine this is going to be same problem when I'll be flying close to stations, have a lot of ships on the screen etc...
I used to play on extended mode as direct to rift didn't work with beta and I still play it like this. Now direct to Rift works, but it has this weird effect of seeing to images when I move my head - the faster I move it, the more they are separated, it is even worse than slight judder I have when I play on low.
When I play without the rift, it is over 75fps all the time.

I've tried everything: reinstalling the drivers, turning off AA, disabling my main monitor... nothing helps. Any chance this is going to be fixed in the release build? Did anyone try reinstalling Windows? Did it work?
Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but when I check the properties of rift in "screen properties", it displays it as a generic pnp monitor with 60hz (it appears like this in the device manager as well), but when I check it in Catalyst, it recognizes it as Rift 75hz. Could the generic pnp monitor driver be the cause of the problem?

My specs: i7-4770 3,4GHz, Radeon R9 200

I just got my DK2 yesterday and had a little time to fiddle with it. I have two questions :

- When I disable the normal monitor and use the rift in extended mode, I can supersample without issue. But when I run with both monitors on (for example to use VR desktop), if I supersample, I get a flickering picture in the rift as well as a fixed ghosted image. Is this a known issue? How can I supersample with my monitor still on?

- The scale feels wrong inside the cockpit, it feels like I'm looking at a miniature model from very close. I just tried the demo game Vox Machinae which put me inside a robot cockpit, and the scale was perfect, the character's arms matched mine and I really felt like I was sitting in a cockpit. In ED something seems off. I though it was the IPD setting, but I tried using some fellow ED forumer's tool called EDDS to set my IPD to the same value as in the Oculus app, but it didn't change anything to my perception. Is there another way to check this setting is properly adjusted, and are there other tweaks I need to perform to get the scale right?

Thanks guys!

Try fiddling with the Field of View slider in the game. I played in my Rift with it at the default setting and didn't mind it, but later I moved it all the way to the left for another reason and when I went back to the rift it seemed like an improvement.

Thanks, I'll try this again, but I did yesterday, I set it all the way left and all the way right, and didn't see any change in my field of view or scale perception. There are also other 3D settings but they say in the options menu that they don't affect Oculus Rift so I didn't touch them.

It's a known issue for me too, certainly with the same symptoms. I found that with version 347.09 (2014.12.23) drivers from nVidia supersampling didn't work at all unless the Rift was the only monitor and set in ED as Primary (which is a shame when Elite Dangerous is listed as one of the optimised games). If there was another display connected, no Rift support worked in any other application including ED- I got a two eye rendering per eye (if that makes sense!) and nothing looked right!

So I've had to downgrade to the previous release of drivers because ED is not my only game (funnily enough), but of course I'm having to run at the standard 1920x1080. I'm assuming nVidia will fix the reasons why Rift support is not working properly (I run SLI too which might not help either) before the next driver update. If this is the same for you then I guess we just need to wait!

i've had my rift now for 1 week. its been the best money i've spent in a while. prior i was running ED on 3 screens with AMD eyefinity. you could see a lot. but the rift made it awesome. seeing the actual size of the cockpits, planets, stars and stations has been jaw dropping at times. I can't wait for walking around and planetary landings.

i just got my rift today, had DK1 since it was available, i used it the first few weeks, later for work only, now i got DK2, elite dangerous looks fantastic with it but there are a lot of aspects they have to look out for, a lot of things that could have been implemented are still missing, it looks like FD doesn't have a dedicated team working on OR.. which is a shame.. The mechanics they produce while implementing rift could later be used on any device that comes along, making more audience, but that is just my humble opinion.

CV1 will be needed to play ED as we expect, or hope for, and a whole lot more optimizations and stability fixes.

All this meaning i will still use my DK for work only :)

Just curious... what specifically do you feel is missing from the OR implementation that would require a dedicated team working on it?

I would love a cockpit viewable system/galaxy map, it's a pain to use it as it is right now :( (not really sure that'd need a whole team...)

Sorry if this has been answered, but I play ed so much I don't get time to read all the forums. Is there any way to turn off the automatic UI panels when I turn my head? I can't find an option for it and would much prefer to only view the screens on command, not by turning my head and a UI panel popping up and spoiling the view!

Unfortunately the only two ways is to either have the comms panel open or disable the hud. I have voice commands setup so configuring is instant

Posted this question in another thread but thought I'd ask here as well to improve my chances of a reply...

ok... something I have noticed about running the DK2 in Elite is that because I have to set the Oculus Rift to run in Extended mode the Low persistence mode doesn't actually work. This is easy to test... here is how. (Before you read on please understand that I am running at 75 Hz the entire time... all motion is very smooth... just blurry)

Set the DK2 to run in Extended mode... launch the Desk Demo from the DK2 options panel (I forget the name)... Notice that if you move your head back and forth anything in motion looks really blurry... Now, exit out and set the DK2 to run in Direct mode... Launch the Desk Demo again and look back and forth... It has way crisper motion with little blur. I am seeing the same blurry motion from Extended mode in Elite Dangerous. To me this means that Low Persistence mode is not working in Extended mode with the DK2 even when you are running at 75 hz.

Has anyone been able to force Low Persistence mode on while running in Extended mode with the DK2?

Have a look at my "bug" report and comment on it if you agree, or with a better solution. It's kind of almost there with Toggle mode, but not quite.

I would, but I don't agree it's a bug. Having played on a standard screen, the hold or toggle ui button does exactly that, and in rift mode, it still does exactly that, just over riding the rift selection is all. I would like to see a toggle button to stop the rift from selecting the ui windows at all, neither of which are bugs, just preferences.

Of course I wouldn't want to change non-Oculus behaviour, that works just fine. And the hold option in Oculus mode works fine too. It's the toggle option in Oculus that doesn't work. As I said in my report, it does not behave, is not consistent, whatever it's supposed to do, whether you agree with my solution or not. :)

Yes I do. On the desk demo I don't see any difference between extended and direct mode, also not regarding motion blur. There is no blur.
Also in ED I don't have any noticable motion blur when running on secondary screen in extended mode (occasional stuttering aside). When I launch ED in direct mode the blur is noticable.
