Maximising profits for the sake of bigger numbers, rather than enjoying the game for what it can be (helping out factions, making your mark on the populace) is a sure fire way to burn out on the game to me. Or to become a Capitalist anyway
Far be it for me to judge how others play, but personally, I've got a lot more enjoyment out of the game by just playing it, rather than worrying about min/maxing everything (I did do that in Beta though).
Almost all of the negative posts I read are core focused on how unprofitable exploration/mining/bounty hunting (delete as applicable) are, or how boring running the same stuff from A to B is. I get the pain about getting into bigger ships, but everyone seems to want the biggest as soon as possible! I've got 80ish million to my name, and I'm Expert/Merchant/Trailblazer. I even love mining... That's just by playing, without any specific drive to get an Anaconda with all A fittings. I upgrade parts of my ship as I go, rather than requiring the absolute best immediately. I find it more fulfilling.
As I said though, to each their own, I don't want to detract from the way that other folks want to play it.
