So it seems, at least for the first quarter of 2015. we will be seeing major updates go to beta at the start of every month. I may have missed it but how long do beta trials last before release?

Monthly significant updates is really good though. Nice work FD.

Beta testing for paid expansions. Nice, as long as you guys at FD honour the lifetime expansion pass some of us forked out good cash for.

Btw, big thanks to Frontier team for publishing this info, as active modder (different types of games), i can really appreciate having developer giving a heads up about planned update timeframe.

To say that I'm disappointed would be an understatement. While I have been the first to defend the premature release of Elite thus far, it is outrageous that it is still going to be until mid-march before we can meaningfully interact with our friends in game.

Welcome to Bait and Switch.

Given their history, I wouldn't be surprised if they find a way out of this promise as well.

One (small?) question Michael. (Which may or may not be answerable). With regard to the two planned expansions: Which will we see first, Planetary landings or The ability to leave the ship?? Regards.

Reading these forums and this thread in particular gives me new levels of respect for the team at Frontier.

That they would continue their hard work on this project in the face of such abuse is a testament to the love they have for this project and those that support it.

I'm starting to realize that Phil Fish was absolutely correct in his assessment of this industry and chose the only sane option available to him by saying, screw it Byeeee.

Indeed, the sense of entitlement and just plain rudeness is fairly breathtaking at times..

Not really...they would only be replaced with:

"OMG! Why can't the rest of us test this? Will we never get the chance to get access to Beta again!? Why not even give us the option!!!"

Pretty much that, yeah. Damned if they do, damned if they don't!

Thanks for the update, Michael, and for your continued involvement in this thread.

And probably by the same group of people, if I were to be cycnical for a moment :)

The update is very much appreciated Michael, and very much in line with normal software delivery processes as well.

An idle question, but if there were a 1.09 then how would patch 10 be differentiated from ... well... release 1.1 or patch 1 on top of release 1.1 (v1.11 or 1.101?) I guess patch 10 would roll over into 1.010?

I don't think many late Alpha/very early Betas look and play like Elite:Dangerous, that can't be a fair comparison.

Some people have technical problems; there are (inevitably) bugs; more content is coming (as was always planned) - but the game as released was a playable product, considerably more stable than some others I have played!

OK, my reasons for calling it late alpha/early beta:

1. Multiplayer options best described as a joke in game advertised as MMO.
2. USS mechanics, often defended here in forums as it's 'only a place holder for future functionality'.
3. Critical bugs like AI suddenly deciding it will stop and stand there for a while in a middle of a fight (without any damage to hull or modules, just stops).
4. Sound buffer issues & graphical glitches & disconnects (ok, here I can agree it can be called simply bugs, just a bit too many for my taste in a 'ready product').
5. Support model, that I will politely only mention.

Characteristics of Alpha: Functionalities are not final yet.
Characteristics of Beta: No major feature changes, bug fixing work and in case of games - balancing work.

With all respect to people who decided to help FD and pay for early access to get this game going - I do value your efforts and I recognize that it's only thanks to you that I can play it. But I believe your love for the game got you blind for its weak spots - and I believe that pointing the weaknesses helps to fight them.

As a customer that did not wish to participate in early access, just buy a ready product, I feel that FD has simply lied in the adverts about the game, releasing a beta as a full product.
And now they dare to ask for money again, so that people can help test features that I personally feel should have been there already. Testers are paid for their work, they do not pay the companies, that very idea is simply ridiculous.

Until they prove to be a bad thing, of course. I could ask for the option to change my ship for free, but I can't see that being a long-term benefit to the playability of the game. You wouldn't have to do it, of course, but you'd probably be the only one not haring about in a Fer De Lance or some other swanky boat and therefore at a severe disadvantage.

I'm not talking about an option to cheat - just an option to improve the Super Cruise system, which is very flawed in my opinion. You can hardly compare that with the ability to upgrade a ship for free. I'm not talking about a Docking Computer or anything here - just something that means I don't have to monitor a boring countdown in order to press a button so I don't overshoot the station. Were this a realistic situation, do you really think there wouldn't be an automatic way to disengage Super Cruise?

I continue to pray for an XML/JSON/CSV file for the station I am currently in, so I can stop using this dumb OCR tool. Making me jump through this extra hoop for the same info you could easily provide makes me an unhappy camper. I am not asking for anything more than my current stations's data and then let us continue to use that data however we desire.

As I have stated before, I rarely venture out in Open. Only time that occurs is due to a mistaken mouse click. Feel free to move my account to a beta server and I will be content finding more things to break.

As for those who don't like the idea of "Paying to test" Then don't... I didn't "Pay" to alpha test, I showed my support to a product that didn't even exist yet that I wanted to see happen. Don't stress out over it. I don't think anyone will have problems if you play something else while waiting for Elite to appear on a sale on Steam or GMG....

This is not important in any way whatsoever...BUT, I assume this will never really come up. ;)

I don't really expect to see more than 9 minor patches between each major one.

Based on previous experience they often release a major build and then quickly follow it up with a couple of quick patches during the first week, but since this now will happen during the short Beta phase this won't transfer over to the main build. After that first week I don't really expect more than 1 patch a week (if even that). Thus giving them roughly two months before the numbers "run out" and by that time I expect that the next major build will already be available.

What about for Super Cruise? It's boring having to stare at a countdown timer until it hits a certain number so you press a button. As for those saying that it's a good thing there will be no autopilot - what's wrong with a choice for having it or not? Options are never a bad thing, people.

There is effectively a mild form of autopilot in supercruise already .. just set your throttle to just below 75% (Just under mid-way of the blue area .. and hey presto .. you don't need to touch the throttle again, just exit supercruise at your destination ... easy as pea's ! .. yes it's slower but so is the docking computer :)

We aren't planning an autopilot.

Michael

Glad to hear that. Reason being I'm afraid people will go into solo mode, plot a trade route and go AFK :(. I know that eventually an NPC would interdict them, but since most of the NPC's aren't to hard. It would be easier money for those players.

Also looking forward to wings!!:)

Yeah, tell that to Ubisoft. Anyway, you can't go on about it not having the features that define an MMO and then talk about how it's unfinished - doesn't that define most MMOs? I mean, aren't they always in that zen coder's state of perpetual development?
