Now what about the Cobra? Would a shorter run with 40t cargo be more profitable than a long 80t one on a per hour basis?
I have a 40t Cobra and doing only rares atm. Making 650k profit for each leg, 1,3m profit in roughly 1 hr.

I have only ever rare traded twice - both times i randomly stumbled upon the rares too, and only did one run.
and i've maybe 3 times killed ships who have dumped STOLEN rares
also, i've been playing since Gamma and currently have 2 cobras, a type-6, and about 2m credits. so you should probably not take my advice.

You can easily count on making 8000 cr/ton/hour in a standard 1- or 2- or 3- jump trade route, with just a little work. You can find such many such routes in either a 15-minute or 20-minute round trip distance. (By round trip I mean total time taking off from station A, selling at station B, and selling again at station A before repeating the loop).
If your round trip is 15-20 minutes you can do a lot better. It's possible to find trade routes with 10 minute round trips. Finding routes with stations close to drop out is the key. With a ten minute round trip you will make 50% more money per hour over a 15 minute RT, if you have the same per ton margins. Trading is not my most fun thing to do in Elite - I want to maximize profits for the time I spend doing it. Even if it's the most fun thing you do, it still makes sense to make the most possible.
id like to know where the heck you guys are finding better than 1100/per ton trade routes? been trading for a while and havent been able to do better than 1200 credit per ton foe a few loads until demand goes down.

Mmhh this is interesting...I think my actual profit with rares and 80t cargo is more than 2mln per hour, I'll time it tonight.
I've read a bit on the forum and it looks like expert traders say that regular trading starts to beat rares at around 200t cargo. But I will never go Type-7 I think, I really find the repetitive two-way trading really boring.

Just out of curiosity, where can you get these rare items you are all talking about? (only started trading last night)
Easy answer - when you get bored of doing one thing, do the other.
Personally, I detest trading. I only do it when I need money quick. Otherwise I'm happy exploring, running missions, and generally mucking about doing what I want.
If I'm in my Cobra and I'm feeling lazy to switch to my L6 I just run the rare trades for 1 or 2 rounds... I make a million or so credits and I'm happy and back I go to mucking about again.
If I'm feeling somewhat more determined I'll go get my L6 and do a few rounds of trading and make a million or 2 and stop again, and go back to my Cobra to muck about![]()
Definitely you're a victim of Barben's time dilation effect
It's not possible to do rare with 80t, 2m+ per hour. Time it, and you will be surprised with the result
Simple maths:
* 5min fast (sic!) station to station jump while building up rares cargo
* 10 avg rares in the station available (and I think I'm VERY generous here
* 8 stations visited: 40 minutes spend, 80t in cargo
* 20 minut for FAST journey to sell it 150 LY away
* 15000 CR * 80 = 1,2M CR of total profit in one hour
Alternative, normal trading:
* 2500 CR fast 1 jump route (now I have your attention
* 10 minut roundtrip time (also fast, but stations are close)
* 200000 CR profit
* total 1h profit is also 1.2M CR
* lack of pirates, refuelling etc, yet borring
so 80t is breaking point, starting with ASP 112t version, normal trading is better (due to rares slow replenish time). With T7 difference is TWICE AS BIG.
Some meat for fellow traders:
LAEDLA (Kludze Colony, 407ls) >Gold>1250> HR 1064 (Clark Terminal, 293ls) >ImpSla>1234 > LAEDLA =2484 [14LY]
My current approach (also in an Asp with 80t cargo space available) is to sit in a "rares cluster" and bounty hunt the nav points. Every time I dock for reloads, repairs or paying off an "oops" I grab whatever rare item the local system has. When my hold is full I move to another cluster that's far enough away to be profitable, sell what's in my hold and start over. It's slower to build the balance than dedicating myself to pure trading but it's fun![]()
