Yeah, that's a fair point. The original post didn't mention trading, but hiring player wings for a trade run sounds unlikely.

But hiring NPC escort wings sounds more likely. If I'm in a T9 and have 3 Elite Viper AI pliots with me, that should give me time to escape.

The wing mechanic could work just the same with NPCs as with players, and also liven up the bulletin board with recruitment. And miners could also use it... hmmm...

... and if you are in a clipper, your NPC escorts can mass lock you so you can't get out at all :D

Yeah... I'm flying a clipper at the moment and that still didn't occur to me lol. Hopefully they will fix that bug before us clipper jockeys are forced into a self destruct situation :)
 
I'd be ok with that, if there were such things, as secure systems. Let's face it... currently all systems are virtually anarchies in that respect. The police will likely not even arrive, before the battle is over and the offender jumped away. Although this is pretty realistic, since they have to supercruise to your location first, it makes the police forces useless, no matter how strong they are made. In order to be of any use, they would have to arrive at your location in a matter of seconds.

This I guess would be true if all the members of the pirate wing were clean to begin with, but my hope is that crimes against "humanity" (ie us) would not be able to be wiped in an instant, and then the bigger the "wing" that the pirates were flying in, the more likely the police would be to take an interest in them BEFORE they even get to gank or pirate a player.

ie so this would mean it would not be a simple matter for the WTD players to cruise around in a hisec system.... also, if they changed it so interdiction ittself was a crime and you had report crimes on, then, even if ulimately you end up losing the interdiction minigame, the longer you can keep it going for, that time would be spent with the police scrambling interceptors to come and help.

given most interdictions will occur in a fairly known path between navpoint and spacestation (slightly more dicy for explorers who are off the beaten path, but then they are less likely to be in toothless trading ships), then imo it would not take THAT many wings of police cruising those paths, to be able to be within 30seconds of mounting a response. esp in as I said, hi sec systems..

but then this is all in my head... the devs may not be thinking anything like along those lines :)

I suppose the pilot of the large ship is also free to fly in a wing. A couple of vipers against an Anaconda AND a couple of vipers becomes a very different proposition

Only if the spoils of the anacondas trades can be shared amongst the wing.....

Mining with wings (3-5 player event)

I'll repost it here so it might get noticed here too.

Ok let's say mining get expanded with wings. Here's the scenario: there are normal asteroids (like we have now) and new shiny asteroids that yield 1000%+ rare metals, but you need to cut through first protective layer, but here's the tricky part, when you start cutting it, event start where you are just big pirate magnet where waves of enemies will start to spawn like in training.
Option a. run - 0 profit
Option b. hire mercenaries/friend - you get action packed shooting while you mine/shoot depends if you're miner or fighter. There should be asteroids for 3(2 fighers)-5(4 fighters) maaaybe but probably not for 6+ players. You will all make enough money as if you were doing quite nice trading route in decent sized ship (lakon 6-7 (for 5 people group) profits maybe?).

You will have instances for 5 players that can make good money as if everyone was trading with lakon 7 - but expect heavy fights with many waves (ammo cost should be justified here).
Or you will have easier 3 player asteroids that give lakon 6 type profits.

Since you will earn around 150-300k each with small asteroids over 20-30 mins (depends how good you are).
Then you have 300-450k each per 20-30 mins earning for 5 men groups.
Cargo would be marked heavy valuable in transporter so when you're done mining you have to go a bit further and repel remaining forces of enemies.

Situation 1.
Lakon 6 miner - 2 vipers as escort, lakon start tearing through
1st wave - random pirates of 1 sidewinder and 1 random small shiop (like sidewinder/viper)
50% through asteroid protective layer - spawns 2-4 random small ships
You're done with first layer and you start mining now.
1-2 750-1250% metal pops out (can be dud indite or some other cheap crap but only a low chance, mostly you get silver 30%/gold 25%/paladium 15%/platinum 10%/ and other metals have 20%) then it spawns 4 small ships
3-5th fragment spawns 1 medium ship like asp and 1-3 cobra/vipers
6-8(maybe 11max) - spawns 2 medium ships and 2-3 small ships

When you're done scooping it ore is marked as wing canister that means if you sell it profit will be split between wing that helped you get it.
If you try to do it solo you will get 2x more enemies because you'll be easy target for them.

5 wing asteroid will require probably to have pythons as body guards because you'll get medium-big ships as enemies but reward will be higher!
Those numbers are not tested but it should be pretty easily balanced with some minor or bigger tweaks, i never had problem balancing things to be worth and fun to do and never ever being OP. Unless i could test this scenario i can't provide more balancing so this is just a rough idea.

Everything should be balanced with what kind of ship you and your wingmen are flying. So it should be easier for guys flying sidewinders only but harder for players with better ships and by harder i mean harder if you compare it to sidewinder only but a bit easier compared to your ship because you'll be able to handle situation better.

This should provide 2 tactics: either mine and let your wingmen kill everything and then continue or mine everything at once while your wingmen try to keep them off of you and then you all just run away at the end (provided that you can survive that many ships at the same time).

This should probably put them into separate instance so that other players won't be able to help externally to make it harder or perhaps they might help but won't get any reward, like boosting a friend.

In the end you'll make more money by trading (around 20-40% more) but heck you don't get to shoot at stuff that way! Plus you can roleplay protecting mining ship, how cool is that?

I don't like online games that you end up playing alone, so this is my idea for future content. All my ideas are always completely free, i do it for fun!

I love that the game is like a single player game. I say concentrate on bug fixes and economy issues, as well as faction and mission based stuff. Wings is the last thing I really care about. I'm sorry you're bored.

The first planned significant update will be 1.1 and will enter beta in the first week of February. We’ll be talking next week about how 1.1 will introduce a new way to collaborate with other players in the galaxy in preparation for 1.2’s major Wings update. We have some some good news for planners of long journeys - V1.1 will also have a significant increase in the maximum distance for the route planner. We’re currently looking at extending this to 1,000 light years!

Looking further ahead there will be a 1.2 update which is planned to enter beta testing in the first week of March. The focus for this update will be Wings and other multiplayer goodness. I’ll provide more detail in future updates.
 
There will be some team-based mechanics in the Feb 1.1 update, with wings coming in 1.2 in March. Both updates will be in beta for the first week of their respective months.
 
nice for u if u dont have friends in the game or u dont like teamplay idk what ever but i like to play in a team or squad but this is only boring after some time...
mabe u have fun with simpel driving from point a to b all the day

have fun im off until March^^
 
Unfortunately the marketing division of FD went full on advertising this game as an MMO.... which was pretty silly all things considered.

If they had launched with wings and other mp features then people's expectations would have at least been mollified.

Still, i love the game for what it is and very happy to know wings are a priority and coming soon (TM) as it will enhance my play with friends.

I will. And I do a lot of stuff outside of A to B. I also play other games that are actually social, not just "promising" to be. So maybe this just isn't the game for you or you should have researched it more. I know I watched a few videos and if I was even remotely 'unsure' I would have saved my money and watched how it played it. I know I may be different than you, but I don't believe marketing every time I hear that a game is "groundbreaking" or any other buzzword they choose to use. Research the game, don't just buy on hopes and dreams.

im still waiting for the wings stuff the game is atm unless boring

we need some squad/team options, group bounties,group warp, co op missions, higher bounties
and mabe change the bad kill/bountie sys. where the last person/ai who hit the target became only the full bountie
this is totally crap...

the gameplay is more like a singel player game...
my friends and me are all in the same systems but there is no need to play toghter
because not there are not enough targets and no shared bounties
and this in a mmo?^^

Every day me and my friends meet up and have group combat with other players in Lave and other systems around there, wings will add functionality but its not needed for fun multi-player pvp etc as we do exactly that now ;)
 
So why did you buy a game that's very solo-oriented and doesn't have any teamplay features?

a friend sayed this game is good but he dindt play anylonger bacuse its boring,alone in space after some time...
and ya i like the game too but now after 3 weeks i dont want drive all the time from point a to b and make some trades^^

Pretty much this. Sure it could be improved with the wings feature, but me and a friend have been doing the assassination missions together recently and it's been good fun and worked well. So co-op is totally doable once you understand the system.

I am really looking forward to the improvements though.
 
The Wings release discussion thread

With all the buzz around the power of groups that wings will provide, I'm not seeing any discussion on how pirates will be able to or intend to put this to use. The deck's already stacked against solo or small groups of traders fending off or escaping from pirates as it is, but when facing an entire wing of them, I would expect the chance of survival when opting for anything but total submission to be about nil.
