Docking computer crashed my ship

No. Why would I want one? I like to boost in at max speed and then cut the throttle at the last moment before doing a couple of 360's and landing perfectly in the dot.

I like to dock myself as it's quicker and a lot less scary, however after a long haul or long bounty hunting session I'd definitely like the option to auto park while I'm in the space loo.

-Exactly- how I feel as well. Flying in and landing yourself is definatly faster, yet ....after a long trip where you have to do everything, a little break while the computer does the flying is certainly welcome.
.
Also, something soothing about that music , especially after having escaped 2 - 3 interdictor attempts (with millions in the cargo-hold at risk)

Got to love the music! I'm still looking for the stereo in my Cobra.... Be good to have a whizzy space radio on board.

tried it once.
it kept my ship hovering above landing pad, but for some reason did nothing more. 2nd time similar situation.
i guess manually i can land a lot faster.

^^ Sorry, I couldn't resist ....('tis the internet)

I tried it once (of course, you have to try everything once, except... never mind :)), and found that it did fine, and the music was nice, but it was slow, and as docking manually really is no problem in this game, never had one after that.

I use it, and I appreciate that it gives me time to run for a smoke or whatever at the end of a long run. Also the music is an easter egg from the docking sequence scene from 2001 a space odyssey. Love it!

The computer works fine on large stations so long as you have a clear view of the slot before engaging. Well worth it IMHO.

Does not work on certain outposts no matter what you do (works for some ship types, not for others).

I still use the docking computer. Manual docking is just as easy, but there is something magical about hearing Blue Danube that really takes me back to the original. I use it just for that. It's worth the risk.

No. Docking and take-off are still magical.

PS
The docking computer in later Elites was great for "instant docking". If it were to be the case here, I'd probably use it when I'm tired.

The Blue Danube is always relaxing after BH/Missions/Trading.

I've noticed it's getting better since the last patch, it doesn't slide as much.

Setting the auto dock to priority 1 in the modules screen seems to make it work better. I also basically turn it on when I'm almost in front of, and close to the slot, so it takes less time.

I'v used the Docking Computer on every ship since Beta and have never had a problem with it. It works on the outposts as well although a little more challenging to find the right start position. Oh sure on larger ships there is a little scraping on the landing pad and maybe a little too hard touchdown. But as long as I manually line up with the letterbox with good distance and reasonable speed it always works. I suspect if one is at max speed 20 meters from the letterbox it isn't going to work.

It's nice to take a break on long runs. It's faster and more fun to land manually. I also consider the Docking Computer to be a second priority when it comes to equiping a ship. Thus if there is a slot available then I'll install it.

Docking manually is faster and not any more dangerous. The docking computer can get you stuck, fined, and KILLED so I never leave the room even if I did use it. In beta 2 I did like being able to come to a station, set auto docking, then afk for a few minutes but in smaller ships it's easy to dock. I'd use a docking computer maybe in a BIG ship that barely fits the letterbox but then it's too risky!

My main problem is with the new utilities update in beta 3 there's never enough internal compartments for a docking computer. I always put a shield cell on no matter what and cargo racks. If I SOMEHOW have an extra, it's usually a high class fuel scoop. I never have enough compartments for a docking computer. I think docking computer should be a separate compartment and make it optional if you want to use it or not. And it wouldn't hurt for better AI or better versions of the computer. If you want a less risky flying computer buy a more expensive one like an advanced docking computer if you're flying something you don't want to risk. Though I doubt Frontier would add an extra slot just because the docking computer is useless, and never enough space. Plus why add extra docking computers when you could just improve the standard?

I love the docking computer. Used it tons in beta because it's awesome to see my ship drive itself. The music always makes me laugh too. But sadly now that I'm flying an Asp I'm not risking it plus all my compartments are cargo racks. If I were to replace one of my 4 ton cargo racks it'd be for a shield cell battery... or a fuel scoop because Asp eats fuel for breakfast.

The docking computer is just a waste of a compartment... there's better options and it isn't even faster than manual docking. Maybe if there were separate locations like a backdoor that docking computer players go through so it's safe from npc and zooming by players that only docking computer players can use... then maybe. But the AI for it still needs improvement to make it worth it. Needs to be faster. I did notice a HUGE jump in speed from beta 1 to beta 2 with the docking computer.

I still think docking computers should be their own compartment and upgradeable. If you don't want to use it, turn it off as if it were your ship lights, orbit lines, etc. But that'd require more work than Frontier'll put out... but a commander ca dream, right?

I'm quite capable of manually landing but I use it anyway for two reasons:

1. I don't have to worry about the landing frame and numbers not being lit up in the stations (meh, I could - and have - used the little compass when that happens).

And 2: I really do like the "Blue Danube" :)

BUT - having said that I will intervene on occasions when I think the landing isn't coming off as well as it should be or when I'm not getting where I want to go fast enough.

I use it when I'm trading. It's pretty bad but it does the job if you give it a decent approach.
It does let you drop like a rock and skid across the pad sparks flying without shields... but never more than a scratch.

Upgradeable docking computer eh, I like the sound of that. The ability to add modules to the ZX81 would be great!

It lands my python ok, but on the asp it would slide back and forth hissing and spitting.
