Well thats odd... A 450 Light Year 'Corridor' of stars

Thank you, Michael, this is an extremely interesting read. In concur with an earlier poster that a vid of you guys going into detail about the galaxy generation and such would be awesome!

Perhaps in terms of a commercial game you likely do have the best real time simulation of the galaxy. That said, I find Space Engine (at this juncture at least) is ahead in a few ways regarding procedural simulation of the galaxy/universe (specifically how you can seamlessly travel space), and I personally haven't come across any immediately apparent flaws, though I'm sure there are plenty since it's still heavily a work in progress. I understand that it's a complicated issue, and I'm not saying that ED's simulation is bad by any means.

Wow I'm downloading this. I even gave him $20. Kind of wish Elite merged with this.

I'm sure everyone wouldn't mind having their saves all reset as we transition to a completely different galaxy model :)

Michael

I dont think we mind the galaxy model as much as the planetary landing and atmospheric flying aspect of it all :)

Ok I'm in the space engine, and I'm not sure that would work with Elite. I can't even navigate properly. Just a different beast, but I'm no programmer so I don't know. I spoke to soon is all.

Not that what we have right now is lackluster or anything, but I love improvements. I'd happily accept that for an improved galaxy.

You navigate pretty much like how you navigate in the galaxy map in ED. Bring up the go-to menu to search for specific objects, or just click on a star, galaxy, or whatever and press 'g' to immediately go there.

I was able to figure that out, and how to zoom in and out with both mouse buttons, but I'm not able to fly around. I also want to be able to see the landscapes of planets, but have to find one with an atmosphere first.

I emailed Vladimir and he sent me this link:

Edit: I literally dozed off watching this, and I don't know if flying in this way is for me. Some of you might like it though.

I think you're missing the point of Space Engine at this point. It's not about flying, it's about exploring and observing a plausible simulation of the universe in a seamless fashion, where you can accelerate time to witness interesting events. Which is why we're comparing it with the simulated galaxy present in ED, and not the gameplay, because as a "game" Space Engine hasn't begun serious efforts on that front considering he wants to build the stuff that... well, makes it possible first.

I don't know why he sent you that video, perhaps to illustrate that technically you can 'fly' a space ship if that's what you asked him. But that's not really worth the effort considering the main appeal of the software package is to go out there and find cool stuff.
