The Star Citizen Thread v 3.0

I was playing PTU last night. Am I supposed to experience something new or ? Because, it's the same as AC. Like, really, what's the difference ?

I think the PTU is basically a test patch phase before it hits the AC, giving them a bigger test bed to test a patch so it does not mess up the entire user base when implemented. It's a bit confusing calling it PTU to be honest because of the PU.

imagine when Star Citizen comes Out

it s going to be a Sci Fi space sim players heaven, imagine get up in the morning trying to decide which one to play that day

i ll stock my food and juices in the house when that moment happens

Exciting times indeed, if ED keeps progressing as it is, and SC is up to the hype.. thats going to have to be a coin toss decision some days lol

Not for me, I'm afraid. I'm not a Space Sim fan. I'm an Elite fan.
.
I'm probably missing out on quite a bit, I could probably get a load more use from my X52, but I just never got interested in anything space game wise other than Elite. Probably a rose tinted view of anything related to my Acorn Electron days, but there you go.

I'm still a bit worried that SC will be overstretched with the sheer body of work they have taken on. I'm a bit worried about this game too in the same regards as it seems planetary landings and walking around environments seem to be the main direction both of these games are taking. I worry that they will ultimately end up with a lack of space content and a less finely crafted space game as a result of this, as a HUGE fan of space sims I wish these games would spend most of their resources improving the space aspects of their games. I honestly could not care less if they add in the ability to walk around on ships or planetary environments, and how much time and resources have to be dedicated to these things that could be used on improving space?

I remember, SWG had this same issue. They tried to make their game do everything, they ended up making a mediocre game that had many broken parts to it that were never fixed and content that was never added or appreciated because they tried to appeal to too many different genre of players. It was impossible for their team to improve anything and the game was simply too big and promised to much to show any polish in any one area.

ED have a good product right now, it could become a great product if they focus their attention to space. If they spread development time over too many areas I fear it will never be a great game.

indeed!

for the moment the decision is easy. One has Rift support, the other does not. That is said to change in a month or two though...

I am a ED fan for sure. Playing it now as a matter of fact. But don't forget a few things about SC. I'm also a fan there too. SC also has Squadron 42 which will be great. It is literally the continuance of the old Wing Commander series. The guys doing it are the same group and new people people too that did the original. They have a lot of really nice high tech graphics, game equipment like the Mocap stuff. Occulus Rift setup for the game. That is a stand alone game on it's own that you can play over and over like any other solo player game you buy. AND it ties to the game to give you in game credits to play with when you "graduate". You can get in game "citizenship" which has perks that allow you to buy gear you have to have citizenship to buy. And of course the persisitent universe. AND you can run a private server on you own computer of the PU as well. AND you can mod that if you choose. Like you did with Freelancer. And for those who didn't know, while you are running a private server, you don't have to play with other people if you choose not to. You can play it like a solo player game since NPC's make up 90% of the population of the game. So really (as in literally) you get 3 games for one price. And yes you can spend insane money if YOU CHOOSE to. You do not have to. You can buy a game package for like $40 USD. So I also look forward to SC as I will be playing both. I look forward to seeing what they add to ED and I waiting for that too. :D

Now imagine if there was Elite and a new Tie Fighter and X-Wing series. If pay for those. Star Citizen doesn't interest me much this far - it seems to be trying to be every game ever, which I can't see working. But I'll keep an eye on it for the next two years.

Jepp, hopefully doing it like this will prevent game breaking/preventing patches like the famous "Unable to connect to server" bug we had for 1.0. I think it's a good thing because of that and because people that are a little bit too eager can go ahead and play the latest (un)stable build.

Yeah but it's currently a test-bed for a very limited ALPHA version of an arena shooter.
It seems very extravagant to actually have a test server for something like that.

I think it's very early for something like this.
Later on when they have the PU or a more complicated version of AC, then it'll make more sense.

This is getting ridiculous and IMO it was totally unnecessary.
So what if it messed up the entire user base? They're already perfectly trained to accept all the problems, bugs, delays, etc.
There was no need for another test bed, inside a test bed.

It makes perfect sense.

This also allows them to simultaneously test two different sets of objectives. The regular AC allows them to balance, hammer out game mechanics, stress test, locate previously unknown bugs, and fine tune details like the HUD.

The new PTU allows them to find the game breaking bugs and test brand new code without worry of stability.
Write code, drop users into it, observe, debug.
