Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

Nexus 4 has only 720p screen, it is similar to DK1 - quality is not for gaming, fun only. ONeplus ONe - Colorcross gogles should be fine (cardboards are too small), quality will be near DK2.
960x1080p on nexus 4 will be fine as 1920x2160, because it have 720p only.
1920x2160 you need to set for Oneplusone (1080p screen) to have higher quality.

Instead of ps3 eye try to headtracking via smartphone (my signature). It works better.

Okay. Of my three monitors, only the VGA one can actually see 1920x2160 in ATI CCC if I turn off EDID. With Window's resolution manager, all top out at 1080p. 960x1080 and 800x900 are recognized both in windows and ATI CCC (under Digital Flat-panels properties & VGA Display properties). GPU Scaling is on for all of them but only VGA's can't be changed to centered timings.

edit: I have a mini-DP to HDMI, mini-DP to DVI, and DVI to VGA setup, all 1080p monitors.

For 20 notes its worth it just to look about your cockpit and see whats behind that dang pilots chair!
I have a DK2 and only tried it once for Elite, mainly play assetto corsa on it, I have been waiting for full release so I can take a look (Behind that dang pilots chiar) at all the different cockpits etc.

When the consumer version comes out it will be a must as combat really comes into its own in VR

I am a big fan of oculus and will support the movement all the way despite Mark purchasing it (aint even gonna try the Z mans surame) but in my opinion all now/future tech vr headsets should be looked upon as the way forward and the cheaper the better, cardboard is just amazing for £20 + £300+phone) so much cheaper than a $350-$400 oculus if you already own a good phone, for £20 I would borrow a phone to check out Elite if I didn't have the dk2 so its well worth it!

Edit: If you already have DK1 or DK2 you can try cardboard for free with a good phone and a box, you get different lenses with the oculus and although they are for different eye types they can be adapted quite easily.

Limelight issue

Did you ever make the tutorial?

I'm using limelight ant trackir, and the only two problems I have is that my trackIR seems jumpy, and I can't get a good resolution figured out for the game to run with the 3D/VR/limelight setup.

What resolution are you running the game at to make it look good and also have the proper aspect ratio?

Hey cmdrs! Happy new Elite player here, hope to meet you guys online.

I am also trying the cheap VR way, using a Nexus7 with my own cardboard cut duct-tape rig... I have an issue though: Limelight works when I point it to the game executable elitedangerous32.exe, but doesn't when I point to the launcher EDLaunch.exe file instead... But when I execute the elitedangerous32.exe directly via Limelight/Gamestream, it doesn't work because the release version seems to rely on the launcher for authentication... So no way to actually make it work with Nvidia Gamestream/Limelight for now. Anyone had some luck solving that problem?

I have 5555 in Trinus' sensor port. That's the default. In Opentrack's UDP tracker options it's +1, so that should be port 5556.

I also disabled x,y,z in the tracker since the phone doesn't record that, but this shouldn't make any difference.

Your gaming chair and setup is poo!

I will take it all away for you for £20

I the same chair for flightsims :)

Card is awesome and is very good to make boxes out off as well:D

Oh wow, this really works! If only it could be a bit less laggy. I have an iPhone4 and used AVStreamer to get it on the phone, TrackIR5 for tracking. Its pretty awesome, but i get simulator sickness because of the slight lag (its really just barely noticable, but too much). Sadly i cannot read any displays, but it was a first look into a much bigger world!

I found out a way to do it via wrapping the executable in an Autoit3 script that also includes a generated server token. I'll post more details about it when I get some free time, as well as my method for making barrel warping for Cardboard oculus users (because as much as DK2 is natively supported by the game, it would seem that Cardboard users are left to fend for themselves in the cold)... It involves writing my own shader for SweetFX, as well as a zoom mod in order to compensate for the lack of resolution impeding on my ability to read the GUI in my cockpit...

I'll give u updates soon.

I have finished my total Cardboard rift mod for Elite Dangerous guys! It consists of a SweetFx shader that implements the required barrel warping, and allows us to now have to use a custom monitor resolution. It also allows you to zoom in and out of your cockpit, in order for the cockpit panels to be readable... At last!

I'll post a video link as soon as Youtube finishes processing it.

I can't upvote @Whitecanid enough for this awesome post. The video and communication is quite clear, let alone the excellent quality of the material itself. You sir are a real asset to the community. Thank you for this.

Ever thought of working with Frontier Developments?... I'm quite sure that @FrontierDevelopments could patch/hotfix some quality of life improvements to make CardboardVR or OculusDK2 much easier to use.

Thanks for the great guide!

I've got all the basics working on an HTC One S, but strangely when I place the phone in the GC the rotation seems to keep resetting to the centred position. I'm assuming the divider is pressing on the bottom of the screen and resetting it, but it's not actually displaying the 'sensor centered' text, so possibly not.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

Just in case this hasn't been mentioned, the HTC One doesn't react well to the magnets in GC. They said not to expect it to work as a trigger, but it seems to negatively affect the gyros too. Taking them out has improved tracking a lot.

Is there much of a difference using USB 3.0 rather than 2.0? I'll be gwtting a Galaxy Note 4 in next few weeks and will be trying this Google Cardboard malarky out.

I'd love to be able to share with them what I made. I sent a few messages in the official Elite forum to see whether one of them would respond, to no avail until now. So just to make sure I am not doing anything that would put me at odds with them, I haven't posted the source code/executable of the mod yet...

I do understand however what was involved for them for their just-in-time release for Christmas... The dev crunch that they must have passed thru for that, plus the fact that any mistake they make would propagate to nearly a hundred thousand client software deployed everywhere... So I would understand why they would take a bit of a time off and not respond to the forum message flood immediately during the Christmas and new year week...

For me, as I need to yield no financial support to anyone, it is easy to patch/hack/mod things without any consequence whatsoever... If they were to attempt merging mods into their offiial software, then a liability would appear, they would have to do some grunt work to make sure that any new game functions are properly integrated (new keyboard, joystick hooks, new UI menu items, new testing phases, etc...) Which I do understand would be a bit daunting if I was them.

I think there is a way for them to make it work still, and that is: maybe they could make a new section in their user config menu, called.. Experimental... where people could turn on and off stuff that is not directly supported, with an understanding that it could make their client a bit unstable when they use those. That would allow them to do hotfixes for new modded functionalities without too much risk... Devs, if you can hear us, feel free to answer! For my part, I intend to lurk around a bit in the forums to see how they would react to the user requests... We'll see how that goes.

In the meantime, I'll continue to explore their assembled code base. Right now I am analyzing their rendering assets via DirectX API ASM redirection, hopefully I could implement simple stuff, such as... having a clock in my cockpit... Or... Being able to watch youtube videos and having access to a computer Vm for working inside the virtual world, who knows. Having a lot of fun right now!

Awesome work, whitecanid! Any chance of a text summary of the instructions to follow? Unlikely to have time to watch a 40-minute video. i got 30 seconds into it today before my one-year-old stopped me.

I ticketed it on beta, but still nothing. Game need non standard SBS mode.

Indeed :-( That's why I currently use a SweetFx 1.4 modded shader combined with RadeonPro to make it work with my own cardboard Oculus rig... (the link to the GitHub, if you want to acquire the main.h file, is in the description of the Youtube video). I also heard that ReShade (by Crosire) is now working with Elite, can't wait to test it out. If this is the case, easy supplementary mods such as adding a Oculus-compatible clock (requested in a few threads now), would be a piece of cake...

I'll let u know the results of my testing...

I'd like to, if I ever get the time... I am working on a startup so things are a bit... Busy, to say the least.

I posted the executables if anyone might be interested to pre-alpha test this thing. Be aware that it might break in the next update they push, who knows. If they want me to take the files down I'll just need a ping from them... They seem to be quite silent around here...

My experience playing Elite: Dangerous with Google Cardboard

I'm pretty sure a lot of you have heard about Google Cardboard. If you haven't, go google it for more details, but in a nutshell: it's a (very) cheap way to experience VR.

I followed a guide on the forums (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=40985) to get everything working and after numerous tries I managed to get things going.

My setup consisted of a stock google cardboard (not a fancy one such as colorcross, but real cardboard one) and cheap acrylic lenses, which is what I believe most people will have. For the phone I'm using a Motorola Moto X 2014. My rig is an Intel I7 with an AMD Radeon HD 7970 and 8 gigs of RAM, which is able to run ED on maximum settings.

The experience of running ED with VR glasses is a very interesting one: it *is* immersive and if it wasn't for the numerous technical limitations of my VR setup I'd probably never consider playing with a regular screen again.

The first problem is getting everything to work smoothly: Trinus server kept closing all the time until I set quality to Ultra, especially when I looked far to the sides. I'm not sure High would have fixed it since I tried on normal, low and even retro before getting mad at it and using Ultra. So basically Trinus worked fine with Fake 3D disabled, Fast mode and Ultra quality. The drawback is that performance took a noticeable hit on Ultra (I was using wireless streaming; maybe on USB it would've faired better).

The second problem is that the sensors needed recalibration every time I'd move my head back and forth. I ended up binding a joystick button to reset sensor controls, which "worked" but broke a lot of the immersion. Also, it is quite disorienting when you return your head to the "centered" position and the screen pans all the way to the right. I believe this might be a limitation on the phone's gyro and not necessarily a software problem.

Visual quality suffered a lot due to the poor lenses (everything near the screen edges got blurred) and also due to the low DPI of the phone screen, which resulted in quite underwhelming visuals compared to playing on a proper monitor. Again, this is a limitation on the way cardboard works: phones just aren't designed to have their screen so close to your face and magnified through lenses.

Poor visual quality also means unreadable text: the fonts sometimes are blurred beyond recognition, especially when the text is closer to the edges. I constantly found myself having to turn my head to directly face the power distributor indicator in order to see how many pips I had into each system. That, coupled with my screen going crazy when I returned my head to its original position, meant that combat was impossible. Trading would also be seriously compromised because I'd either not be able to read prices at all or I'd have to make some serious effort to do so.

Lastly after spending nearly 1 hour and a half with the cardboard box firmly attached to my face both my nose bridge and forehead were hurting. It just isn't comfortable, though it would probably be enough to add a few cushions on strategic places. I decided I won't go through the trouble of doing that, however, because of the other limitations I just mentioned.

Overall, was it worth the trouble of setting up cardboard? Yes. It is quite amazing to see the possibilities, and I'm courting the idea of getting an Occulus Rift to have a proper experience now.

Is the game playable with cardboard? No. I believe that even with better lenses quality would suck due to the phone screen. The sensors are probably not going to be precise either (and believe me, you absolutely want precise sensors when your viewing is involved). There is going to be screen lag and stuttering, which may be fatal in a dogfight or even during docking.

So I'd advise you to give cardboard a shot (there are also some cool cardboard-specific stuff on play store), but do not think you're going to have a cheap occulus replacement.

How do I do that? Is there a specific forum section for stuff like that?

On a side note, I updated my mod executable a few hours ago because their last update broke functionality. It now works again, guys!

Current version: v0.2, valid as of Jan 18, 2015. Executables in the description of youtube video, as usual.

Limelight doesn't see Elite in Nvidia Experience on the PC, but it is visible on the PC in Nvidia Experience. Do you have any idea how to add manually Elite to Limelight on Note4?
