Am I the only person NOT playing with a TrackIr or OR?

To comfort OP: No, you're not. Personally I go even a step further: I play with mouse and keyboard. That is, no fancy joystick or other flight simulator equipment.

I just use an Xbox controller and voice attack and will be sticking with just that. Won't be able to use a rift due to eye sight and I don't really see the point of trackIR on a single monitor.

You absolutely get a gigantic benefit with Track IR on one monitor. You don't have to move your head that much at all. It amplifies your movement by however much you set it to. After a few hours it is as intuitive as turning your head and walking down the street. You forget you even have it on.

There is no reason not to use any head tracking device, it's cheap and easy to set up (don't buy TrackIR!).
The oculus unfortunately has not reached a point in development that would be interesting for most people yet (myself included), I will wait for the nest iteration n of the dev kit or wait for the final release.

I started out in ED with a Thrustmaster AfterBurner II and no head tracking whatsoever. Then I went out and bought components and made a head tracker out of infrared LEDs and my webcam through freetrack. Then I went and got myself an X52 Pro. Last week I went out and got myself a DK2 (In Moscow, Russia you can get the DK2 the same day you decide to buy it albeit more expensive than directly from the manufacturer). This game's costing me more than my clipper can earn in an hour but in real money. I don't regret it one single bit though since the game in the DK2 is something completely different. You actually get the sense of scale of things you would never get from a flat monitor. Took me around 3 -4 days to adjust and stop being nauseated while docking and in the galaxy map though... The ASP cockpit is a marvel and the clipper's bridge is massive (and you can almost walk around it when in the rift by standing up and walking around the room).

Imo I think the OR would be pretty damaging to the eyes after around 10-30 minutes of gameplay. I more than likely won't be getting one of these, correct me if I am wrong though.

It seems like every video I see of people playing ED has them looking around in the cockpit with a TrackIR (or similar).
Since I am poor and "Married with Children", I wonder if I'm missing out on much, or whether I am handicapped in some way while playing for not having one...?
Is it worth the cost?

I've got some savings which I am holding onto for the Consumer release of OR (I ally debated whether to get the DK, then the DK2, but decided it would be best to wait for the actual thing instead).
Is there any point getting a TrackIR if I'm going to eventually get a Rift?

Try this in the interim as it's very cheap and work really well.: EDTracker

I use TrackIR (+Warthog) over OR because:

1) i am a smocker, and sometimes i just simply want to smoke a cig during my play sessions.
2) sometimes i want to drink an coffee during my play sessions
3) i would look like an super-nerd-geek to my wife with such an black box over my head
4) i wear glasses and can't see anything without them, so i'm better off with using TrackIR

Note:
I suck at building own things, so that's why i bought the overpriced TrackIR, but i do not regret it, it's awesome!

Since your eyes do not experience any strain whatsoever (they don't need to focus more than if you were just looking at something at the same distance in real life) and the screen is an AMOLED screen without any emissions, I don't see how it can damage your eyes. I've used it for hours at a time and haven't felt any eye fatigue whatsoever. All this provided you calibrate it properly as per instructions provided with it and chose the proper lens for your eyesight (if you're shortsighted you need a second pair of lens which are included with the device and are very easy to swap out). If you do not take the time (minutes) to calibrate it, yes, you may get eyestrain. The bigger problem is getting used to the fact that your eyes see motion your body doesn't feel which leads to motion sickness.

You really should try it before deciding.

Waiting for oculus retail version.

That said I am wondering how it works with glasses, being a glass wearer myself, is it comfortable to wear with glasss?

To answer the OP:
.
No, you're not the lone ranger. 21" flat screen monitor here. ... and I'm still having fun
.
have a nice day

In your list, the only thing that is really a problem is the need to wear glasses (which could be replaced by contacts in some cases although I would never be able to wear contacts myself - just can't stand sticking my finger into my eye - it gives me a nervous tick for minutes). I am a smoker too and smoking in the rift is not much of a problem since there is a gap between your nose and the headset through which you can actually see the outside world with one eye if you look down and to the side. A tiny bit of getting used to and hitting the ashtray is not a problem. Drinking is also not a problem if you use a straw. A modern-looking high-tech device on your face is cool, not lame, but that's a matter of taste and strictly my own opinion :)

Unless you do your own DYI head tracking I'd say no, because the trackIR is already half the cost of the rift. I got the DK2 and its been well worth the $350.

No headlook here, except for a rarely used hat switch.

I'm pretty good with sensors, and my Viper doesn't have very good non-forward visibility anyway.

I can't say it makes you a better pilot, and the 3d display for the radar is pretty good for spacial location, its just more fun.

I don't have any, I don't usually play sim games and I'm not rich enough to buy gadgets for one single game. Mouse is OK for looking around.

Get an EDTracker 9150 version and run it throuigh Opentrack. You can then use it (3DOF caviat) in any game that can use TrackIR (Arma, DCS, F1 2014......etc). It is simply superb and a fifth the cost of a TrackIR

The big question is though, will you get OR and completely immerse (sit inside for "realz") yourself in the cockpit? :)

That is the ultimate question :D

OP - no, I don't have OR / TiR either .. 1 monitor - KB & Mouse .. I don't have an issue with it nor do I feel like I am missing out. Sure, game could be "more" but I don't really have the time / inclination just yet.

I'm with your OP. Even though I'm excited about the OR, I'll wait for the commercial version, which will be better in every regard (higher res, better tracking, comfort, ease of setup, etc.)

I have TrackIR but I tend to sit so rigidly still with it on that it becomes uncomfortable, so I rarely use it. The joystick hat pan around is good enough.
