DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

brumster, would the following work, without your pcb?

mpu-9150

Arduino Pro Micro

Tactile Switch

The reason I'm asking, I'm considering making one, with a length of cable between the devices, the MPU on top of my headphones, and the Arduino down the side, a bit less bulky.

It would but one issue you'll need to address is that the MPU board you've specced there is 3.3v, not 5v, so you'll need to make up some arrangement to get the voltage down to 3v for it.

The 9150 boards we use (the 8-pin type) have a 3.3v LDO on them already so this doesn't present a problem.

Thanks for spotting that, I missed it. I haven't been able to find any of the type you use, except on eBay, and frankly, I don't trust those. Sparkfun is one of the few places here in the US to get them. The MPU-9150 is hard to come by.

I seem to be having trouble being able to enable/disable headlook mode in game.

Is this the same for everyone using the EDTracker or am I a huge noob?

If it helps, here's a link to a 3.3v 9150 on eBay. I bought the same one from these guys and it arrived (here in the UK) quickly and with no fuss. Dirt-frickin-cheap, too.

Hello I bought an EDtracker, however I cant really manage to get it working. I simply dont understand how can I run the required softwere. Can someone write me a simple instruction to what should I do after I plugged into my device and installed the driver on windows 8.1? Thank you!
edit:
Well solved it:)

Has anybody gotten this to work with the round Lillypad Arduino? (I can't find the recommended one anywhere that doesn't have a 4 week leadtime from China...)

I am disappoint. Dr. Theopolis would have already solved this problem. ;)

I sent Twiggy out scrounging for parts, and have only just not realized that I can't even scratch my nose without him. :D

Seriously, I have not been keeping up with hardware tech for at least the last 5 years. I got into management specifically so I could stop keeping up. ;)

I tried the new 9150 version, but despite calibrating it according to the manual several times, I kept getting the same glitch: whenever I look off-center, the head will first move accordingly and then swing back in the opposite direction. Occurs with both pitch and yaw. I have the orientation set to top/usb front, makes me wonder if gyroscope is in the correct orientation but the magnetometer is accidentally swapped around and gives the opposite movement?

(6050 mode works fine, have been using it for a couple of months despite having the 9150, and went back to it for the time being…)

Hi, How do you have the tracker mounted (on which side is the usb cable) ? And does this match the orientation setting in the UI ?

Hi, my device is a DIY version and according to pictures I think I have the 9150 board mounted the other way around compared to the “official” one, so my cable is on the rear side but I choose ”top/ USB front” instead, which gives the correct behaviour in 6050 mode:

But come to think of it, I did not test all other orientations due to assuming the one that works in 6050 mode must be the correct one.

(I do realise the device is off-centre relative to the axis of rotation, but I can live with the slightly uneven yaw.)

I am sure that I was told at some point that leaving the UI open while playing it had to be minimised for the auto center to work? I looked through this thread where I thought it would be but sooo many posts I was worried my eyes might strt to bleed. :D:D

for the standard edtracker then the UI should be minimised to allow auto-centre to function.

For the 9150 it doesn't matter.

However , it's good practice to minimise the UI because when it's on-screen (not minimised) it continually swaps data with the tracker and renders the 3d Head. This takes a bit of cpu cycles and may reduce the update rate for the head position to the game.

So basically, what I'm saying is, always minimise your UI :)

You are correct :) if you need the UI open while playing (which is really only for the re-centre button) then you should minimise it in order for auto-centring to work.

edit: damn it, ninja'd

Thanks guys, I knew I wasn't dreaming when I read it... I just have the standard for now but may go for the 9150 when funds allow.

Cheers

Have to say, I downloaded the latest UI/software and my 9150 Ed Tracker is now the dogs doodars. So smooth and makes everything better!

I find it can wander off a bit potentially in the first few minutes of use (starting PC from completely off at mains), but from then on generally good!
