I remember reading a book and the conversation went like this:

What are are doing they said was impossible. Einstein's theory said it was impossible and every scientist and physicist agreed.

The reply was, well we are doing it, so I guess they were wrong.

The next reply was. Your right the theory will have to change to match the new reality we discovered.

In other words, to make their fiction story work they discussed it and basically said, you change the old theories to match the new facts.

No one here can state with certainty that what we know as facts today can't change tomorrow when it comes to theoretical physics. After all it is all theory and even some of Einstein's theory's have proven to be incomplete.

So who knows what we learn tomorrow may invalidate what we all take for truth today. Or not but it makes for some fun reading, or game play.

I'd agree but for me the important thing is more the tone of the game. ELITE is filled with pirates, bounty hunters and smugglers, so I'm not sure a clinical science lesson atmosphere is appropriate. It needs a bit of flamboyant imagination to go alongside its correctly modelled star systems.

So you will be the one who will disappear in first official black hole in gaming history? :D

I've offered free consultation if and when they introduce black holes into the game (sometime after launch) :D

Oh, and as self-appointed chief propeller head, I decree that the contrails could be fairly realistic if the engines are ion drives; these work by spewing matter out in the opposite direction to the one you want to go in, a bit like using a fire extinguisher to propel an office chair

We would expect such contrails soon after the ship turned, but they would fan out with time

The poll should include another option.... those that cannot even upload an avatar...

That would include me

:)

It's in UserCP lefttop of your screen and then select 'edit avatar'. It's just a couple of lines below your location which you have set up :)

OT: I selected 'None of the above (e.g., just like gaming)'. I dont have any science degree.

I do love sci-fi and supernatural movies/games but only if there is strong character progression. Thats why i prefer TV-series over movies most of the time (e.g. Buffy, Prison Break, Sliders, Grimm). And RPG games like Baldurs Gate or tactical like UFO Enemy Unkown/Civilization.

Back in tha dayz I played arcade-like games but it seems those days are over.... I just don't see the magic of the Arcades any more (maybe I am too old? I think the 80's and 90's feelings are just lost personally)

Sometimes I feel I don't really fit this timeline.. I use my phone mostly for making calls :S

I can tie my own shoelaces.
That should be the real qualification for getting into "The Elite." :D
Looks like I am going to have to raise my game then, doesn't it?

Challenge Accepted!

But of course Ion engines would produce an immensely low TWR (albeit coupled with a high dV).

Oh and diploma in Biology, working as database developer and short before finishing a second diploma in computer science (with german university diplomas being usually seen as the equivalent to master degrees in other country).

Also KSP player

I don't think those laces would fit through the eyes in my shoes. Or does that person have exceptionally small hands? Or should I say, hand? Very impressive tying a bow with only the lefty.

Loved SciFi since a child! Star Trek, Star Wars, Blake 7, Dr Who... you name it :)

I follow SciFact a fair bit and consider myself fairly Technical although I have no super qualifications to my name barring A levels having worked in IT (a mix of software development / Databases and hardware) for the past 20 years, but am also quite a hardcore gamer which i fit around my family life - or should I say, a hardcore gamer and fit my family around that...

So overall I love all types of SciFi whether its fact or fiction unless its outragously unrealistic and even then if its entertaining I dont really mind! hehe

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I'm just an historian who happens to enjoy science fiction.

Lol. My major was in history, with a minor in philosophy. Now I'm a principal IT support person for a department on my old college campus. Go figure. :D
