Joining the Oculus club...

So, I pulled the trigger today and placed my order.. Site says 1-2 weeks for shipment, hopefully that's somewhat accurate and it wont be 1-2 months and just haven't updated the page..

Guess we will see, and Ill report back with my first impressions of it when it arrives! Hopefully it arrives before my Zombicide Kickstarter backing.. or I may be playing that more then my PC ;)

Good news, I ordered mine over the weekend, I didn't see how long it was going to be for delivery (I was slightly under the influence of lots of vodka at the time), so your post has made me feel great :)

Haha well we can be DK2 buddies then ;) Friend me in-game and we should check eachothers ships out in detail.. no touching scoops though!

I was hoping i could hold out for the CV1, but apparently my willpower isnt all that great..

There's a thread in the VR forums that delivery is around a week, which tracks for the one a friend received two weeks ago. I ordered mine on Friday... I think my work mates are going to punch me by the time it arrives; I'm so excited I'm like Quagmire when he found internet based adult entertainment.

Let us know how you like it when you get it, and how easy/hard it was to get it set up and working! I've been really thinking seriously about pulling the trigger on a Rift as well.

Deal :) - I was the same myself, but I'd made a crazy drunken bet that amazingly I won just beforehand so I've got mine for free with a bit of change to buy more vodka.

Disclaimer : Doing crazy drunken things on the internet is not awesome and can get you into lots of trouble, or a free DK2 :)

Welcome my friend. Just know that it might ruin non oculus games forever.

By that I mean you will not want to play games that don't support oculus hehehe.;)

I admit that I've been debating getting an Oculus for a while. I'm not known for my patience, but I'm a Tad worried about how my eyes are going to take it seeing as I'm legally blind in the US. I'm also something of a gaming "enthusiast." I like my video games being pretty and I've read some pretty bad things about the quality.

Is the immersiveness of the Oculus high enough/quality enough to offset the potential drawbacks?

It will completely change the game for you. The inside of the stations really come into scale with a rift, they looks absolutely enormous! I also recommend finding an outpost with a close orbit to a planet. I think Azaben orbital is one of them, the planet looks so big and amazing!

So, in other words, "totally worth the 350 and PITA setting it up and probably worth getting the CV1 later in the year?"

Hahah thanks guys!

Well, Shyeer, sounds like you and me are pretty similar.. Im 36 now, been playing PC games (i am NOT nor have i ever been a console fan after the NES) since I was 12.. Microprose F-117A got me into gaming early and I have never looked back since.

While im considered an "oldie" now by most gamers, my tastes in games has also evolved in them which means I am not easily impressed when something new comes out. This includes working in IT for most of my life and being a former game developer.

Which is really WHY I decided to pull the trigger.. Its been a long time since ive purchased anything thats really given me that "Wow" factor.. even with Nvidia 3d years ago when it game out it was "okay" but gimmicky.. Im hoping to have that sence of "okay this is cool" again with the DK2.

So When I "review" it, its not going to be from a technical stand.. I understand its a development kit, and if the resolution isnt the up-most best, or whatever, Ill understand that its slotted to get better.. instead i hope to review it from an avid gamer standpoint, and from the experience alone. Does it make me WANT to play more? does it get me involved with the game more.. does it really give me a sense of "being there".. Is it practicle in some games (i couldnt imagine playing DCS-A10 with it.. it would be great to fly, but next to impossible to hit the right key combos for all the equipment since you cant see anything.. )

So Yeah.. Im sure i will recommend anyone whos thinking about using it FOR gaming to wait for the CV1... but i think that even within the 6-8 more months we wait for the CV1 (and thats if they release on time), it will be worth the 350 to "try it out" and decide if its worth keeping as a regular gaming piece, or something that ends up sitting on the shelf 90% of the time..

Basically, im buying the DK2, in order to trial the tech, to see if I will want the CV1 :)

*le sigh* There goes my tax returns. Curse you Elite! You are boring enough to make me hate myself for having to do certain things for money, but impressive enough to make me keep WANTING to do them.

Yeah pretty much lol! Depending on your rig, if you can super sample up to 1440, the text is much more readable and everything looks sharper.

I run an FX 8350 8 core 4.0ghz and 16gb RAM on a Gigabyte 990fx UD3 with a single Gigabyte R9 290x. So far, nobody has really been able to tell me how bad of a system hit im going to take with my specs.

Anyone with an OR and glasses (but not a huge face...) that can comment on the feasibility of OR with glasses?

For me? Absolutely, and I will definitely be getting the CV1 when it releases.

I have (just) enough disposable income to justify the DK2 as a toy spend though. If £300 and change is a significant investment for you, it may be wiser to hold off for CV1, as it will be better value for money (better specs for a similar or maybe even slightly cheaper price) and will also give some time to squirrel away the money piecemeal ;)

You'll be able to run it fine, ED doesn't need very powerful hardware. I can run the game with 130FPS on my GTX760 and a comparable i5, and the Dev Kit 2 needs stable 75FPS.

I've read that it works, but the FOV gets weird and There's a risk of scratching the Oculus lenses with your glasses.

I have the smaller Flexon frames, and with the DK2 "eye relief" dialled out so there is maximum distance between my eyes and the lenses, they fit fine. If you have contacts then wear those instead though, it makes things far easier.

I cannot recommend Savvies 40mm scratch protectors enough, if you have glasses they are a must, and if you don't have glasses they are also a must. The DK2 lenses are not coated at all and are horribly prone to scratching, even with the supplied cloth; not enough to actually affect wearing them, but enough to see the scratches every time you go to put them on. Avoid the stress and get the protectors ;)
