So after much contemplating the opinion of several friends and ED forum foes (hint hint Jennes and Stormprooter's thank you for your informative and kind reports) I've decided to finally take the plunge and head into Star Citizen World.

I must say it was a really overwhelming experience just to navigate trough that website, its so confusing with LOTS of different technical info mixed with lore stories and what not that I needed help just to buy a packaged!

The game has a massive amount of information and manuals, videos, community reports that i'll just need to watch to get the hang of it properly! Food for thought if I may put it that way... Will take me a couple of weekends just to take a little grasp of it I assume, but I'll think it will help in the end!

Anyway, long story short, I ended up buying a mighty RSI Aurora Ship: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Arena-Commander-Starter

Now ill just have to learn how to fly like this guy and i'll be one happy space cowboy!

Hope to fly with you forum aces soon!!

Welcome Citizen, I hope you get plenty of enjoyment out of the game.

I do agree with you about the RSI website and the store there - it is very confusing to the newcomer. And yes, there is a lot of information to take in. I still find it a bit confusing myself. It could do with an 'orientation' section, easily accessible and visible off the home page, perhaps even tracking if a new user has read it, and will nag you to read it.

Best advice I can give you is to get your controls set up and get familiar with them all in free flight mode. To get used to controling ship movement, the racing option is not a bad way to get a feel for ship handling - try experimenting with COMSTAB/GSAFE on and off, and then full IFCS on and off (coupled/decoupled). Then when you are getting comfortable maneuvering, dive into Vanduul Swarm to get some combat practice.

There will probably be some movie made by in-game assets on a longer term, says Chris Roberts (begins at 44:00). He's thinking about making something out of the Dave Haddock stories, like the Cal Mason or Kid Crimson stories for instance.

I just wanted to pop in here.

Im somewhat disillusioned with the current pace of ED as an alpha day one player Im finding that the development here is not heading in the direction nor the speed I expected it to.

Anyways...

I backed SC at the 16 million point and I havent booted it up since AC release. Which i was disappointed with at the time.

However just today i updated to the current build and I am really impressed with the progress. The flight model and options for control customising have made massive jumps. I had a really great time for the last few hours just playing about with the drone sim. The flight model improvements have made it far more intuitive and FUN!

Please Deliver RSI! ED will be dead in 2 years.

I`m not that pessimistic like you on future of ED, but I`m too looking at Star citizen more often recently. AC is becoming really fun so i'm glad they are on the right track with that.
I just hope that paying for ships and in game equipment won't be carried over to the realised game. Otherwise big corps that are already created around the SC will dominate sandbox immediately.

Well, time will tell how SC pans out, they have yet to start implementing other parts of the gameplay together and to see how it meshes, let alone a plethora of mechanics. While 2015 will be filled with new things coming together, it will also be the year that shows how SC will turn out, especially SQ 42. The PU on the other hand is only slated for end of 2015 for Alpha launch if all goes well together, again time will tell which mechanics actually make it into the game and how fun it turns out.

As for Elite, well, it's core gameplay is good, but while it's a vast game, its pretty shallow. Time will tell how well Frontier is able to add on to that depth and Wing's will be a good example of it.

I thought I'd clear up some misunderstandings about the current status of Star Citizen and its modules. Is it Pre-Alpha? Is it Alpha? What's released and what's not released?

Squadron 42 - Single Player game - In development

Not released (first 10 missions release in the fall of 2015, then 10 missions every quarter until 50 missions are released)

SQ42 will go directly from development to release, most probably without any public alpha or beta phases but mostly internal testing. Perhaps with a small group of external testers in a PTU-like test mode.

Star Citizen - The Persistent Universe MMO - Pre-Alpha

Hangar Module - Released
Arena Commander - Released, currently in v1.0.2
FPS Module - Not released (Alpha at the end of March)
Planetside / Social Module - Not released (Alpha in April)
Persistent Universe - Not released (Alpha at the end of 2015)

SC is in Pre-Alpha because all basic content isn't implemented yet. When all modules are released then it will be in Alpha state.

Will be interesting to see how SC handles first-person combat. Could be some valuable lessons for the future ED F-P gameplay too!
Later on, it will also be interesting to see how the First-person gameplay interweaves with things like the open world and the death system.

When I last played SC the scenery was a huge disappointment. It looked cool but you couldn't reach stuff in the near mid ground that seemed like it should only be a short boost away. Felt really hemmed in and not in the least bit fun despite looking nice. Has that changed? I got bored of the asteroid type things over a planet with the big energy beams because it was so constrained and I felt I had no freedom. Quit the game after 30 mins and uninstalled it a couple of weeks later.
