Community Goals in action....I mean seriously, you now have a grind counter to watch.

Yeah, but what a show!

Agree completely with the OP, the game framework is great, but it feels too generic. I am still enjoying ED and feel my money was well spend, but the only reason i am still playing is my Oculus Rift Dk2 and nostalgia for when i played Tie Figther/X-Wing/Xwing vs Tie Fighter enough to break a CH joystick :)

I had been planning to roleplay a little to put some life into the game, figured id join the Alliance and fight the evil slave trading Empire, but the two factions seem completely generic.

I think there are a lot of good suggestions in this thread, i hope the developers take a look. Either way, im fine, ill play this until other cool Rift enabled games starts to show up (like Star Citizen and maybe No Mans Sky and other genres) and then not look back.

* improve mining, make each piece mined half a ton of something instead of 17% or whatever, make mining a bit quiker! Bots for collection is also a good idea.

I'd prefer they go further with this and make mining more challenging than just pointing at something and holding down a button. It would be really cool if you had to cut the ore from the rock, then use a grabber to pull it out (which you control) - something more challenging and gamey. Then because it takes longer, the reward should be higher.

Designated mining ships and collection modules would be nice. They may have fudged going with the triple ranking only, and not having more rankings available for more player types. These could then be used as multipliers for career earnings.
(bounty payouts, ore yields, ect.) Pirates need more love too.
Higher ranks would allow a higher multiplier. Maybe there is something else they can put in.
Careers could scale closer to trade and give a bit of progressive feel to everyone.
Things to reward players for their time, its what the game is missing, in some cases.

To address the OP's point 1 which resonates with me quite a lot (no game beyond the targets you set yourself).

I can't help but feel that as multiplayer and wings becomes a thing in the game, your enjoyment will be fuelled by that. I know in other games, the fun really starts when you're invested in something with other people. Maybe you'll join a wing whose purpose it is run a particular trade route, and you'll be offering fighter support. Maybe you'll be performing raids deep into enemy territory, with a fleet of anacondas set to disrupt enemy economics. Maybe you'll be in the Anaconda, maybe you'll be protecting them. Maybe you'll be attacked endlessly where you're so invested in what's happening that you'll not be able to even get up to take a pee. This is where the game will become super fun.

For what it's worth; use this time to sharpen your skills, lay down a load of money, and hold on, because it's going to get wild out there really soon.

Yeah. People vs some big boss objective sounds fun IF they allow solo players to hire NPCs to enjoy it also. I don't really want to play with people and have to schedule around others for "an objective". Separating content is a bad move.

Plus I'm baffled by the whole wings thing. You really want to follow a trader for hours for a fraction of the profit? It will just enable group coordinated killing until actual content is in the game.

Usually escort is done when moving high value cargo from one place to another.
This is irrelevant for ED, as there is no cargo to move.

It's all commodities and while you could escort a trader, it's really rather pointless.
You could just do a more secure route, and earn a fraction less instead of running a high risk route and paying an escort.

When, and if, mining gets to a highly profitable point, mining protection could be viable.
Both from NPC's and Player Pirates.

Mining is one of the areas where the devs have made specific comment that what we have is bare bones so one can reasonably hope that there will be improvement in this area before long.

As for rewarding players? Yeah it boggles the mind how such a basic concept as rewarding a player for their efforts seems to be lost upon the ED designers.

Respect OP, for presenting your view in a polite, constructive (dare I say, insightful) manner. I don't feel the same, but that doesn't mean I don't see your points and appreciate where you're coming from.

Though I think many if not all your points are valid, all of this really comes down to personal preference. I've experienced the same game you have, but have no desire to stop playing - I'm still as excited as ever to log in. Take your urge to clean your kitchen before ever mining again, for example - I just started experimenting with mining, and while I know many find it mind-numbingly boring, I spent about 3 hours on it last night. First I explored a bunch of systems just outside inhabited space to find a good spot and then made about 175K in Silver, Gold, and Palladium. Loved it, was a nice break from exploring, combat and trade.

Before anyone accuses me of being a complete weirdo, I'll just admit to it - I know I am the outlier here, that there's probably many more who've tried the game and feel like you do than people who've tried it and feel like me. I get a major buzz just from the simulated experience of piloting a ship through space, and I know this doesn't happen for everyone. I like games that are less "games" by the current industry definition, and more like experiences - I'm a sim-head. Not that I'm anything special, but it feels like E: D was developed with gamers like me in mind.

Don't forget that the basic goal for the v1 release was to bring back a space-sim classic from 30 years ago, and update the look and feel for 2014. Expecting it to be anything other than that at release is due to mis-information or lack of research into the project. That said, FD has been very clear from the beginning that the intention is to add to that base game after release, and that v1 is really nothing more than a starting point.

If the game isn't fun for you at the moment, a break for a month or two (or maybe longer) may be just the ticket. Who knows, maybe after a week or two out of the cockpit, you'll find yourself missing the experience.

And yeah, say what you will about everything else, there's few who will try and deny the audio in this game is nothing short of mind-blowing.

I can see the point of view of the original post. I also agree with those that say it's a mindset thing. The whole point of Elite is that it's open play, there is no story, because there is no story. I like that there isn't one. The game is a framework, it is an implementation of the original game, with updated graphics and ability to buy extra ships. I'm loving the familiarity of it out of the box.

The devs are working on bringing new features and fixing issues that they planned to do.

As someone said, 30 years of dreams is hard to live up too. I loved Elite when I was a kid and loosing access to the game because computer hardware moved on so I wasn't able to play it anymore was a bit of a loss.
I could see back then the potential for multiple people to links their computers together (using modem at the time) to allow people to play with each other - that day has come.

Elite Dangerous has not had time to mature. I kind feel sorry for the people who played it through Alpha, Beta and Gamma - they've using a test platform for the last year. It's understandable that they feel it should be further than it is, as they no doubt had some major features added to the game. At the moment, now we've had release, it's all about making the platform stable, ticking off the glitch list, rebalancing things now that unintended things are happening in the wild. There's work on dealing with exploits and making sure that the platform is consistent for all players. It's not easy at this stage and will only get harder.

Give it 6 months and see how much/little things change. Hopefully, there will be expansion packs - more ships, access to the stations, maybe have people fly your ships for you (to transport from system to system), wingmen - how about flying a T9 full of palladium, with an escort of NPC pilots in vipers that you bought and kitted out.

There is so much possibility to this game.

As for the OP's point of not wanting to do anything, that's burnout pure and simple. If you don't want to do anything, no one is forcing you. This game doesn't hand you the way to play on a plate. It was never about doing that. It was about sparking your imagination, getting out and having fun. The world if your oyster, if you are not motivated, you won't get anywhere no matter what stuff is laid out on a plate for you.
