Big TV or multiple monitors

Don't just restrict your rig to ED other programmes and games can take great advantage of multi-monitor set-ups I run stuff at 5760x1080, even my windows 8 start screen is in full mode not just on the one.

Get a 46" TV if you are like

though

:D

I like the sound of the OR, but I'd need to have a try before commiting.
I think I'd get motion sickness or worse

And since the game will be with me in Dec... OR will have to be a present for another day
I have heard that the developers of Oculus Rift believe they may have nailed any lingering issues relating to motion sickness. I suspect that this is related to latency, or the perceived lag between you moving your head and seeing this change in terms of your viewpoint. I hope this is ready for the consumer version some time next year.

LOL. I do have a nice BenQ GW2450 monitor. But I do not have the money to buy more monitors or even a new TV. I'm on SSD and don't even have the money to buy a pledge this year. I HOPE I have the money by January to buy the scout pledge if it is still available then. Sigh, must be nice. I don't begrudge you the ability to buy 10 monitors, but I have to stick with what I have. And I'm very grateful to have what I do. :)

With standard off-the-shelf GPU's like the AMD R9 290X now able to support 6 monitors out-of-the-box it makes sense for upcoming games to try and have some kind of multi-monitor support.

I've had some experience with other kinds of simulators (aeroplane, truck, bus, car) and it is indeed the latency that partially causes the sickness problems - but also the fact that your inner ear is not sensing the movement that your eyes are seeing.

For anyone planning to get such a device, I'd advise to try it out first.

For me, i'd ideally like to have three >24" monitors in front of me, giving a nice 5760 x 1200 for forward view. Then, if ED is able to do it, another monitor on each side for left and right views.

The quote from Mike Evans puts a crimp on that though :(

Mike Evans said:
We have no plans to implement any sort of MFD placement feature in the way you describe. The MFDs we do have are fixed in their location within the cockpit geometry (which you can't toggle off btw so you're only going to be able to see these MFDs if your looking front and centre out of your ship. I'm not sure on whether or not we're supporting multiple monitors for rendering the cockpit across three monitors for example though.

FD don't have to do anything to support a single view over multiple monitors other than support large resolutions. Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround act as one virtual monitor, so you're just playing the game with a huge resolution - E: D won't care if that's a single TV or 3 monitors, it just looks like one screen as far as it is concerned.

What FD have said they won't do is allow you to float off panels a la Flight Sim onto multiple monitors. So surround/triple headed, yes. Panels and pits, no.

(So Cassius, you'll get your 5760x1200, but not the side views)

The only issue with a tripleheaded config is the hud placement and where some of the items are - if they make them draggable, end of problem. The issues come where you have a radar screen for example locked to the far right edge of the screen, which is uncomfortable to have to look at on the far right monitor in a 3 screen set up.

Rift support is going to be cool, but to be honest, you need a toggle in/out of rift mode to use huds/interfaces in station etc most likely. The current DevKit resolution isn't really sufficient for decent UIs in game beyond the flying part, DevKit 2 may resolve that, and the consumer should be better, however I think it would work better as a system if you pop the rift on when you fly, then take it off when you dock and go back to the normal screens.

multiple monitors

I would get them any way i can not live with just one any more lol

For work i agree, but i have seen the need for multiple monitors in games, other than hardcore flight sims.

I have one 27" Hazro display, which more than suffices for a desk environment.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they've ever confirmed multiple monitor support. The last quote I remember (2/9/2013) was uncertain -

Anyway, go for an Oculus Rift (if an HD version comes out soon enough)! :)

It's a sad state of affairs if FD can invest the development time and effort to support the Oculus Rift (a niche gadget for sure at present and probably for a while), but can't see their way to supporting the very common setup of multiple monitors providing a wide view. Why on earth would they limit themselves this way? I can't think of a good technical reason to do so - if they can do a "wide" view for OR, surely it's a simple affair to do multi monitor. Tonnes of other games do it; it's almost a standard.

Where does that quote come from - a DDF place? Any chance of asking a question in there for a reason for not supporting multi monitors?

As for not supporting draggable HUD components and so forth, that's a real shame too. Reinforces my view that cockpit-only views are a hindrance and backward step in UI, unless you have an OR, I guess, which will no doubt be fab. It's like they've designed the UI to be great if you happen to have the OR, but you're going to get a pretty second rate experience otherwise (compared to what you could've got had they catered for more common setups).

Depressed :(

They need to provide a FOV setting to make this sort of thing work. You don't want to just stretch the standard display across multiple monitors; you want to allow the view to be wider to the left and right. Doesn't sound like they're allowing that (unless, yes, you have an OR...)

Congratulations with new pc :) I have a 55" led which I use for movies, Utube and series. Ive tried to play X Albion Prelude on it, but the letters were hard to see because of the hz and resolution. Even in Windows its hard to see
whats spelled because the letters are so small. In Chrome you can actually zoom in so it helps. But offcourse you can always sit closer if you want. I use my monitor for games because of better ms and its more relazing on the eyes. But FPS can be played on bigger screens because there are usually not much small letters. I would suggest 1 27" monitor with high resolution.
But go for whatever you think suits your needs best :)

DDF archives - click it and see :)

Doh! *slaps forehead*. Thanks Liqua for waking me up :)

On the subject of the FOV / multi monitor thing, I guess I shouldn't get too down. Even if FD don't support it themselves, most games end up with a hack to enable FOV adjustment and multi monitor stretching soon enough. Maybe something to get my teeth into during alpha.

Rather than larger screens, or many slightly smaller ones, I am rather leaning towards having even smaller ones attached directly to my face!
