And now it's official the mission overhaul will not come any time soon™ ;(
Where'd you hear that?
And now it's official the mission overhaul will not come any time soon™ ;(
I'm sure I'm at at least 200 hours in ED, if not more. I'm not bored. And I play pretty much everything. Even if ED did give you only 30-60 hours of "juice", that's still more than a LOT of AAA console titles, for example.
IMO all the whinging and crying on the forums is largely based around unrealistic personal expectations that ED would be the "spacejeebus" of the gaming world.
IMO if you feel you've run out of things to do, just play other stuff and keep an eye on patch notes and come back every now and then to enjoy/try the new stuff. When you make Dr. Evil threats and proclaim to the sky how terribad you think ED is, all you're doing is contributing to keeping other newcomers away. If you feel so strongly that you need to barf all over the forums, that means that you actually feel passionate about the game and like the game (you just wish it was "better"). Well, if you like the game, help the game to stay profitable enough to pay for continued development and improvement! Don't troll the forums and make it seem to curious outsiders like the game is a huge pile of trash.
That said, Evolve actually _is_ trash, lol, so go troll there in their forums. It's half-baked and the company behind it has implemented one of the most egregious "money grab" monetization schemes yet. Google "Jim Sterling" and watch some of his recent rants on the DLC monitezation trend. I agree with him this has to stop. I won't buy any such games.
Have some repThis is exactly what I think too. Elite has always been about the Lone Pilot living in a vast galaxy. You're free to make your own way, create your own tasks etc.
Yeah but you can't really, can you? You're free to do a handful of pretty specific activities that on a mechanical level are all pretty much the same and repeat them until you die of boredom. I've asked so many people what they do to make their own way or what tasks they set for themselves, how they use their imagination... and really all I've heard is "I like to mince about in a planet's rings for the sake of it" and "Imma in a spaceship, vroom vroom."
Have some repThis is exactly what I think too. Elite has always been about the Lone Pilot living in a vast galaxy. You're free to make your own way, create your own tasks etc. It's not about creating mega corps or factions and people should stop thinking it ever will be. Elite will not allow you to become that, its just not set up that way. You're not meant to be a leader of a guild or faction or own stations or systems, its not about being that 'big' its always being about being you're own man. Yes we have a limited multiplayer and soon hopefully 'Wings' will let you create some Co-Op fun, but get used to it, cos its not about the making you the biggest, richest leader in the galaxy. End of.

And if they like to do that then thats their prerogative isn't it. Just because you find that boring, doesn't mean it makes Elite empty or un-fulfilling. I personally am a Rares Trader. Love it and yeah its a bit Euro Trucker Sim. For sure. But I get interdicted now and again, and that gets the blood pumping. As a Rares Trader I want to find Jaques Mobile Station and get some of his Rares too. Also heard a rumour that there are Thargoid Artifact Rares out there too!Yes its 'Grinding' in a sense, but I can branch off and do some Mining or Missions (yes they're procedural) or Bounty Hunting or Pirating (although I'm far too nice to do that)
Point is there is plenty to entertain me. Just because you don't like that and want.... well I dunno. I suspect you want some deep, detailed, handcrafted missions, but you know what they take a hell of a lot of time to do, they're labour intensive and at the end of the day don't take long to complete. The game is only a few months old (since release), give it a chance, over time more mission types with turn up I'm sure, some specific to Wings no doubt. I think you need to rain in your expectations, Frontier is a only a small/medium developer, I think they have a great game base and has kept me playing longer than any other game has in the last decade!

You and others like you are free to wander off and play something else and pop back and see whats happening, I'm sure I will too (lots of games out there), Elite Dangerous can only get better and I'm sure it will.![]()
Snd such.
Really?
You have seen everything there is to see in Evolve in 1 hour, tops. You have a very small number of maps (and a ton of paid DLC) fueling a fun but ultimately very very short-lived multiplayer mode.
So do push FD to add more content and variety to the game, please. But stop the "mile wide inch deep" thing. Get real.
ED isn't for everyone. This is pretty standard for any game. Some people are naturally never going to enjoy the game or appreciate it. This is absoloutely fine and natural.
The usual question always arises is why such people insist on still playing a game they don't enjoy or hanging around the forums of a game they don't like playing. Its beyond me.
Personally my hours of play are already in the hundreds, and still not even remotely bored.
Be in a cut-throat galaxy, for starters. Or engaging in meaningful warfare.
I don't know what "flashier" means. And I have never played an MMO where you can be "the one". So I don't get what you mean here. You can never be "the one" in an MMO-alike. Having mechanics for meaningful interactions with the game's world has nothing to do with the word "flashy."
If there's anyone who ever posted about this game in a way that 100% reflects my own opinion of it, it's this one:
https://anttiilomaki.wordpress.com/2015/02/05/elite-dangerous-or-endangered
After you read that, you might get a glimpse at why many of us are so hugely disappointed by the game in its current state.
In the end, it might boil down to the question of whether you're a casual player or not. The game might be a perfect 10/10 for casuals, I get that. But for me, space sims were never a casual experience. If I think that the game has bad mechanics (or lacks mechanics), I'm not going to hold back on criticism because others don't have a problem with that.
30 - 60 hours??? That only makes me giggle at how many other games are completed in less than that??
Thats pretty good... and frankly the wonderful thing about this game is how quickly you can change the way you play, to refresh your love.
Anyway Im sold on the game, and yet there is still so much I want to see in it, and so much that I sorely miss at this point.
Yet, I still get excited to jump in.
After reading through this thread I've realised that you literally answered every question as I would have.
i 100% agree with you.
the trouble is the casuals and die hard fans are happy and the game is more or less what they want (pending a bit of Dev made content)
I think the big difference is that they see it as a SP game and they're happy with the direction it's going and any suggestion to deviate from that path is met with rage and vitriol.
they fear that by allowing us to have the mechanics and freedom to play as we'd like it will diminish their enjoyment or somehow steal the Devs valuable time.
its ironic that the same players always banging on about "freedom to play and have it your way" (burger kings) are usually the first to loudly shout down added mechanics for territory control and meaningful PvP.
the other humours thing is that most of the vocal opponents never admit that player created content would actually free up the Devs to make more crafted SP like content and features as the rest of us would be busy fighting/ allying/pillaging each other without bothering them too much.
Everyone could have their cake but alas it seems like that is not meant to be and we will only be able to play the game of the casual/SP crowds terms.
My last thought that I'd add to your succinct and insightful arguments is that currently Elite feels like a jigsaw puzzle, sure you can choose to amuse yourself for countless hours (by putting the pieces in different combinations or imagining they have different pictures but essentially the basic principles of the game limit one to heavily using their imagination and the result is that there is little achievement or effect beyond the very basic level)
it would be great if we had the mechanics to actually make our imagination into reality but sadly this is not the case.
Interesting post, nice read, well written. It's obvious you like to write, and are fairly good at it. Me, not so much. I'd like to ask you to answer just one question. Could you imagine a space based game such as "Elite", that doesn't have any of the things you mentioned there, that could actually be a much better, & funner game in almost every way? I can. If you can't imagine this, I think it may illustrate some very locked in, self limiting beliefs, from people like yourself and many others that are like minded.
For me, I can see "Elite", giving us an adventure that I'm looking forward too. I'm looking forward to this content, not yours, or any other player content you may have to offer. I want to see what "Frontier" has to offer.
That's not to say, I don't think you and players like you, shouldn't have a niche here for you, I do think at the very least "Frontier" should throw you some kind of bone. I do think that what ever they give you should be on a very short leash, and be able to snatch it from you on a moments notice, if say your organization decided to start a never ending killing spree of every mining vessel you could find, and started driving players from the game.
Don't even get me started on that emergent, (another name for screwing other player over) game play B.S.. Lets just say I'm ok with you getting a tiny bit of control.
