From GTX 650 to GTX 960 Best upgrade evaaaaaaa!!!!!

I have a 650 Ti atm, it is sufficient for my standarts, however the rest of the PC is pretty bad (AMD A10 APU, only 4 gigs ram)

still elite looks pretty good on medium to high settings

I play with my old GTX560 Ti. Runs all maxed at FullHD. Will upgrade for Oculus Rift CV1... But not earlier.
I thought exactly the same... then I got a DK2 and realized that my 670 was not gonna cut it. The 980 all the way... Though I fully expect to need to buy either a second 980 or swap out for new Nvidia when CV1 lands.

Elite in ultra ? ..... yes please yaaaaay

So glad you posted this 'cos I've just taken the plunge and ordered my first gaming rig in 15 years just so I can play ED. Was gonna stick with the OEM's stock 750Ti but decided to upgrade in the end to the 960 (ASUS Strix OC edition) and I've been looking for some reassurance that the extra money was going to be worth it! System is due for delivery next week and I can't wait to start playing - been lurking on the forums in the meantime :)

I just got an LG 29" ultra wide 2560 x 1080 monitor (29UB65-P)
and was wondering if 970 will be enough or I should squeeze more for a 980 (due to the whole 970 issue with its access to 3.5Gb ram etc..)

Your AMD A10 is fine for most (if not all) games, being quad-core :) I'm only running an AMD Triple Core with my SLI'd GTX 570's, everything maxed at 1080P running silky smooth; will try the new SSAA settings this weekend.

Snap! I have the same monitor as you. I use a GTX 460 1Gb and it plays at about 30-45fps with everything on full bar AA/ downsampling. A GTX 970 will eat this resolution for breakfast.

Having a bigger peripheral vision in game is great!

I have bought my last Radeon card. I upgraded my last one ,that was supposed to be equal to the 970, to a 970 the difference was huge. Nvidia all the way.

I am currently running a 290(non X) and the game runs fine at 60 fps. I do have frame sync set to 60 since that is my monitors refresh limit and I HATE screen tearing.

I don't see my self going to much more than 3 monitors (2560x1080) anytime soon and am torn between (possibly) upgrading to a 970 to future proof myself (Possible SC purchase) or "upgrade" to a 960 to lower my operating (Electricity) costs since I am confident I could still see 60 fps in Elite.

Now add in the possibility of buying Star Citizen and I lean back to keeping the 290 or buying the 970 since I think the 960 would be a bit underpowered for SC.

Decisions, decisions,,,,,,,,,,,,

I've been looking at the reviews and benchmarks for the GTX 960. I think it would be a fair upgrade compared to my aging 8800GTS... It only needs to run 1600x1200 so I'll be expecting the game to start looking truly gorgeous.

Indeed so. I upgraded from an 8800 GTS to a GTX 970.
