Starpoint Gemini - anyone played?

I've just noticed that this has been released. It sounds interesting - a tactical space RPG. The graphics are a little.. erm... "imaginative" (as below) but if the gameplay's good that won't bother me.

Anyone played and have an opinion?

It looks crap, embodying all the worst things about typical space-game graphics, the facts about the gameplay indicate that it's crap (2D space in 3D engine? Arbitrary skills like distrss call?), second-hand opinions indicate it isn't so hot either. I'd pass.

There is quite a bit of talk about this game over at the SSC, I have not bought it myself yet, thinking about it though once they sort out the bugs.

Sorry, not to disrespect anyone, but really? The team behind this has obviously put some work into it. Maybe we shouldn't start dismissing it in such a fashion? Especially since other people might see this thread?

For what its worth, I own this game, and while I disagree with the terminology used by the previous posters, I have to agree on some points. Lets start with some key thoughts.

First, the game has a control scheme and viewpoint reminiscent of Star Trek Online. In that, its a third person tactical type game set on on plane. (No, you can't go up or down.) You go from system to system via jumpgates, and there are a handful of stations in each system. You can fly about investigating ship wrecks and anomolies. You can also take missions from stations. My problem is that no matter what you are doing (mining, searching a derelict, repairing a station.) That it really just amounts to locking onto your target, and waiting for a 'scan' bar to finish. That sums up every single non-scripted mission in the game. Combat is hit or miss, as you will commonly get overpowered by pirates, with little or no help to aid you. Off topic, that skill distress signal is frighteningly useful actually, as friendlies completely ignore you when under attack. The systems need a roving police force or something. :p

The game is actually pretty good for an indie title, as most of the bugs where ironed out in a couple of weeks. The voice acting, and story is actually pretty good, and kept me interested for the most part.

Overall, a lot of good is in the package, if you can accept the 2d plane, and its other niggles. Would I pay full price again? .... well, I'd watch some youtube videos or something first.

The post below me reeks of spam.

 Do you mean me? Surely not, the only thing I "sell" is hope for the eventual creation of Elite IV :D And yes folks I still have faith despite everything that's happening, or rather, not happening at Frontier Developments

As for SPG, I have been reading the bug reports over at the SSC. The dev team is getting there, but being a small developer it going to take time before they get them all. So if you do buy this game, do submit your bug reports over there. Here is a link http://www.spacesimcentral.com/spg-bug-reporting-f66/game-stopping-bugs-t1552.html

A Bot indeed!

Every team behind every game has obviously put some work into it. It doesn't change the fact that many games just suck and sometimes it's just evident from screens and snippets of info.

That's already pretty much a deal breaker for me.

That's pretty much another deal breaker, no matter what "that" would stand for.

Off topic, that skill distress signal is frighteningly useful actually, as friendlies completely ignore you when under attack.
So, not only does distress signal requiring skill to send make no sense whatsoever, but it's also made more useful by idiotic AI mechanics? Just splendid.

Then, you have barf-tastic visuals and art direction (I'm not speaking about technical side here).

Sorry, if it looks like crap, and smells like crap, I don't feel inclined to check if it also tastes like crap.

Good nose, congrats.

Indeed, it is a spambot, although it apparently tries to disguise itself by repeating random posts from the first page of various threads as its own before proceeding to do its dirty work.

@Geraldine:
No, not you, "NhocCuteGirlUK".

Oh, ok DraQ. Thanks for pointing that out, in fact the same thing happened to me when I discovered a bot had ripped off one of my posts.

Crafty little bu**ers these bots :D

And as your in Bonnie Scotland, Happy Burns Night Geraldine :D

Hmm.. maybe I shouldn't make posts so early in the morning. Also, I was referring to Ukgirl, since she blatently (sp?) copied and pasted Draq's previous post. Sorry for the confusion Geraldine! Next time I'll just report it like a normal person. :p

However. The point I was trying to convey was that its a solid game with solid mechanics. You can hate on this type of game, and to a lesser extent Freelancer, but both are easily accessible, and entertaining to a certain extent. Different kind of games is all.

That being said, would I reccomend it to someone like DraQ? or even any other Elite game fan? No. Go back to playing FFE/FE2/Elite. I consider all to be superior when it comes to space simming. I think SPG is directed at a different audience. It DOES get points for having a sandbox mode, but its quickly boring once you get the best ship, unlike our beloved series.

Well there is, simulation and game, all have there pure extreems but there lot inbetween. If this dev choose 2D game mechanic. While for simulation a base requiorment is 3D. Then it never ment to be a simulation. But more abstract game.
Wich isn't bad thing it just aim for a different audience.
And with that fancy unreal GFX in space make a lot of sense.

All games fall inbetween to the pure game side including Elite. but it hangs out closer then bulk of space games to simulation side.
Only nasa training simulation game might be a larger step closer.

Altho I have no problem with more abstract unreal gameplay. I prefere the bigger titles with use 3D with fancy Gfx. So not my thing to.

Starpoint Gemini II News

Back on Topic for this old thread, LGM Games have just announced that Starpoint Gemini II is scheduled for a Q3 release date.

Have a look at this thread on the SSC and here is the LGM Games website which has some concept art for you to look at. I am sure more content will follow as the release date approaches.

Also moved this thread to the general gaming section. :)

I played Starpoint Gemini intensively for couple of weeks and I liked it. A bit hard at the beginning, but once you grab a massive ship and mount powerful weaponry, it was a walk in the park. I'm far more interested in the sequel since the first shots announced few days ago look very very intriguing!
