You have to make a lot of special modifications yourself. At least we're waaay past .5c!
I'd love it if we could affect the external looks of our ships beyond the tiny pylons

The T6 can outjump the cobra.
To check out ship cost, go to edshipyard.com and configure your a ship.
Basically Class D everything except FSD which should be A, and you probably want a reasonable fuel scoop (but they don't weigh anything, so focus on refuel time vs cost)
Up to you whether to take shields. Personally i do.
This is a Cobra for 4.5 million that will get you around 26LY jump distance: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=302,,2-6u6u6Q5K5K5K6k,4-4mpT7Q4mpT2jw2UI (dropping to a 3D power plant will get you a little extra range if you want).
5 million for a T6 with a 30LY range: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=30W,,2-5K6u6Q3m5K3m6k,50ompV7Q42jw2UI
So, for a little extra cost, then T6 will get you the better explorer ship.
Of course, what you really want is an Asp, but an Asp decently configured for exploration runs to about 14 million, but you need around half a million for insurance.
Well, that's how it is at present but that's because we know there are no dangers out there. But that's a bit of "outside of the game" thinking. In strict roleplay we shouldn't know for certain that there isn't anything to worry about.I have to disagree. For one thing an explorer ship has no need to be combat ready, just good at what it does. So taking a clearly non combat ship seems more immersive.
Anyway, one of the best aspects of ED is that we can all choose to play it as we like so vive la difference!
I am out exploring in a cobra and haven't got the top grade fad. I'm not going so far out that stars are really widely spaced so my shorter jump range isn't an issue. In fact as I return home, i can see that I'm followi g the same route as a previous explorer because about every other jump I see his name on bodies as first to find. The jumps in between are blank. Big jumps don't equal more return or better sights, just quicker journey to a particular target, so it all depends if getting to a nebulae or the galactic core quickly is your thing. If you just want to wander out and maybe get some first to finds, you don't need to sell your first Born for an A FSD
Just my opinion anyway
i just got back from exploring in a kitted aspwear and tear in an asp will eat you alive. and a type 6 also takes considerable damage from high speed super cruising.I would have gone with the Cobra. Jump Range is overrated for all but the most extreme exploration journeys (we're talking weeks in real life here) and anything bigger than the Cobra, the cost of Wear and Tear will eat your brainz.
